    In this installment, I rework an NESRGB modded Front-Loader that's filled with the sacred hot-glue sauces.
    All restoration work was performed pro bono for the very excellent Twitch streamer, cantaloupeme.

    I think the main issue with this is you aren't emphasizing that you aren't mad that he is bad at soldering and wants to cover it with hot glue rather you are mad that the guy is _selling_ these like this with cheap solder and hot glue.

      Absolutely right. Do it however you want to do it. I'm being critical of the fact that it's being sold this way. And ultimately, if there wasn't a problem with it, it wouldn't have arrived in my hands to fix.

    As you challenge yourself to more and more difficult soldering, I think everyone has those moments where you just finally got the damn thing to stick, but it's kinda fragile and you just want to immobilize it so you don't have to do it again.
    Adhesive is fine, but don't put it ON the solder joint. Put it on the wires *away* from the solder joint. That way anyone who has to rework or repair it down the line has an easier time.

      The most I have done is about a year ago the cable for my pc keyboard was broken (I dropped it so many times) I cut the broken piece off and didn't have heat shrink small enough for the wires and yet if I didn't coat them when they touched they kept shorting, I knew superglue wouldn't work so just put a small amount of hot glue on each wire so I they didn't short and could still fit heat shrink over the thicker cable.
      Still works to this way.

    I recognize that cable, it's flat pair telephone cable, I would guess probably 8-conductor? 6- and 8-conductor flat cable were often used for carrying multiple normal telephone lines, ISDN, etc, but the most common use in the past few decades is for Cisco-style phone jack serial connectors. At a previous job we often had dozens of systems with serial consoles all wired up to an avocent/cyclades serial concentrator/terminal server and we used cable that looked exactly like that.

    I feel like you are being a bit harsh about the glue on the wires, the point of that is to keep the relatively brittle solder joint from being the point of flexture in case there is tension on the wires. It moves the stresses a bit further down the wire so it evenly bends the insulation and unsoldered stands inside the cable more evenly. (though you won't gain much structural integrity if it's solid core) Also it removes the risk of using a chemical type of glue or epoxy that could have vinegar or acid that attacks the traces on the board.
    Not saying you are wrong in that it's pretty much uneeded, but it doesn't really hurt unless it accidentally makes an insulator where unwanted, loose strands of it ending up in sockets etc. Otherwise a lot of manufacturers secure mechanical parts with hot glue and RTV, it's an acceptable practice.

      I agree, even Ben Heck uses hot glue in his builds and that guy really does know what he's doing. I've seen bad hack jobs and this isn't one.. Also 60/40 lead solder is much better than the silver stuff. It's just not as environmentally friendly. Louis Rossman uses leaded solder to fix MACs all the time.

    • @mjc0961
      @mjc0961 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GMCLabs Maybe I'm forgetting some videos, but I don't recall Ben Heck ever pouring hot glue all over the solder joints. He'll put some hot glue on the wires to hold them in place, but he doesn't dump an entire bag of glue sticks onto the solder joints. This is most definitely a bad hack job.

      @Coldern Ice unless there is mechanical strain relief built into the cable, it's very common. As someone who has been into low voltage electrical assemblies. If mechanical considerations weren't a priority at design or cost prohibitive, hot glue is pretty frequently used, especially on rowed conductors.

    The reason alcohol works is because it is thin enough to get between the surface material and the hot glue. Hot glue works because of negative air pressure funnily enough, it has nothing really to do with sticking so to speak, the alcohol breaks the air tight vacuum and normalises the area air pressure. Anyway, that was my two cents, great video Voultar.

    I understand using hot glue to secure some wires that may need support but this is pretty overused here. Still though its miles better than tape. The one thing that gets me with stuff like this is people need to clean their work. Flux is everywhere. I understand you technically don't have to clean flux but some brands of flux can be acidic and corrosive.

      This is what I came to say.

    • @crunchyfrog555
      @crunchyfrog555 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Actually, yes and no.
      Sure, it provides strain relief, but only at that point. When done thoughtlessly like this, all it does is move the strain further up and solves nothing.
      Go and look at a common or garden power supply for any electronics. Look at the power cable. Note that the strain relief is applied where the cable is shrouded and strong enough to take it.
      This is a perfect example of someone modding without knowing what theyre doing. They know a little but not enough.
      Hot glue can be used, and used effectively, but unless you apply it correctly and in the correct situation, you can be making matters worse.
      I strongly recommend you go watch what an experienced electronics designer like dave jones did monstrates about hot glue on his eevblog channel.

    • @spambot7110
      @spambot7110 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      whoops, my off-the-cuff comment missed a few things. glue over the connection does seem bad since it barely moves the point of strain relief at all. I'd imagine a more effective solution (for mods or rework only of course) would be globbing the wire down at least a few cm away from the solder point. Of course better would be through-hole soldering (ideally with plated-through holes) to provide enough strength to get the wire to the chassis, but that's not a luxury modders get very often.

    • @frtard

    Voultar's video speaks for itself....with that said, I have a top loader that Crayola modded. I bought it earlier this year, and it didn't look as bad as the one in this video. Not nearly as much hot glue, except on the PPU. I took pictures right after I got it. Here are the pictures: imgur.com/a/9j8hN My critiques were the hot glue on the PPU (not a big deal, tbh), how mangled, and uneven the PPU looked, also a screw was loose that held the case together. I didn't have any missing screws.
    I've even communicated with Crayola, and he's a guy that's constantly honing his skill, improving his equipment and is pretty knowledgeable about the modding community in general. He will talk your ear off, when it comes to soldering. He stands by his work, and prides himself in not price gouging.

      These pictures were taken immediately after receiving the top loader. After having watched your video's, and the video's featured on GameTechUS, I felt like I had an idea of what to look out for. I was looking for dull blobby solder, and an ass ton of hot glue. I didn't find it. The only hot glue I can remember was the glue you see on the PPU. I'm not even certain there was glue on the connectors, and switches, but I can't remember. It wouldn't bother me, if there was. As long as they are mechanically held in place, I can live with a little extra glue. As you illustrated in your video, it's easy to remove. I just don't want to see hot glue hiding a bad solder job.

    Hey Voutar dont know if you remember me. I'm the guy you tried to repair my m82 demo unit. (the one with the issue on the last 3 slots) i didnt know you had a youtube channel defiantly subbing. i just wanted to say sorry about coming off the handle a few years back. i was steamed and wasn't thinking straight since i had spent a lot of money on it and nothing was fixing. i thought about sending it off to ben heck to see if he could fix it but i just gave up and shelved it as is for now.
    Nice video btw! ive been installing nes and n64 hdmi mod chips and repairing virtual boys more recently using the new hakko solder station i got. seems you have the notorious work of drakon Hes a hot glue freak. So much that i bet he makes hot glue condoms and uses them lol jk.

    I love to hear Voultar complain about these shady eBay sellers. I work retail and have to deal with people want to get price matching of eBay. I laughed at a customer who asked me to price match eBay on a new Ultimate Ears speaker to a refurbished Ultimate Ears speaker on eBay. I laughed to his face and mocked him by asking this customer in the most jackass tone of voice if they'd price match eBay (if the situation we're reversed).
    I can't stand greedy resellers who are just poor grade people in regards to personal development and they have the nerve to think that their half-ass efforts should be rewarded with a big financial incentive.
    Voultar is awesome and his soldering work is hypnotic, soothing to watch, and magical.

    Well, other than the poor desoldering of the PPU, I don't really see anything wrong with that guys' soldering work, I mean, personally, I wouldn't use hot glue directly on the contacts, instead, I would stick the wire to the solder-mask somewhere nearby, and I do that with all solder points I deem to fragile, such as wires attached to legs of smd chips and trace repair, so I wouldn't consider it a negative unless I had to work on it at a later date, and you proved how easy it is to remove it, so even that isn't a problem.
    But for all intensive purposes, I'd never have any of my consoles modded by someone else, and would never mod someone else's console, I just can't be bothered with customer service, besides, what's the point of having a modded console if you didn't mod it yourself? Modding it is the best part, there's no better feeling then turning a console on after installing a mod and having it work perfectly (although it doesn't always work first time... damn R-JTAGed XBOX 360 with its tiny solder points and thin traces).

  • @RandomGreenFishPhone
    @RandomGreenFishPhone 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    That solder work is awful. It looks like the first time I tried to remove and socket a CPU / PPU from the NES using solder braid. I have since improved my solder work vastly with practice and better tools like a desoldering station and better iron. That kind of work may be OK for personal use, but I would never try and sell something with such poor mod work. I thought this guy has been doing mods for a some time, so I would think he would have improved a little. Maybe he is still using a cheap iron with solder braid because he spent all his money on glue sticks.

    A lot of the big electronics manufacturers use hot glue as strain relief and that's what it looks like the original modder was doing here, I'd rather have a bit of hot glue on some wires than have the wires fracture at the soldier join through vibration.

    • @rangergreen235
      @rangergreen235 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In my experience if there is every something hot glued by a manufacturer it isn't ever glued to a PCB, usually plastic in the case or something. I have however seen laptop manufacturers use Kapton tape, which I believe Voultar also doesn't like? I'll agree to disagree on that point though.

    • @Phoenix2312
      @Phoenix2312 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @rangergreen235 You are absolutely right - That tape is common in ACER laptops... But they are generally cheap builds so you expect that... And in my experience as well teh only time you ever see hot glue from a major Electronics Manufacturer is on the Plastics or Casing... NEVER the wiring!
      And there is actually a reason for that! The glue while it can help relieve strain can also hold in heat... So it can if used INCORRECTLY short out the PCB's.
      If Soldered properly - You should NEVER need Hot Glue in a Console or PC... Some children's toys maybe... (After all they will get moved, Bumped, Chucked around so there you need teh extra strain relief)... But that should NOT be required in general electronics.

    • @rangergreen235
      @rangergreen235 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't done PC repair professionally in a while, probably about 2012. But I can tell you for sure, that Apple, Dell, Toshiba, and Acer used kapton tape. Here's an example from ifixit d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/JlFi1kXDMaxdd4fs.medium It was also pretty common that manufacturers would tape down the wires for the wifi antennas and the data cable for webcams.
      To be clear, I wasn't advocating for it's use, I just meant that it isn't crazy.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is a stationary game console, with stationary wiring inside. It doesn't need strain relief. And that's not what tape is for in a laptop either, it's so wires are in a convenient spot when they close the lid and don't interfere.

    The thing about this is the glue I hate when people use hot glue. For two reasons one once the glue becomes old it starts to turn a nasty brown colour and becomes conductive witch can really mess things up on the board. Two it dosnt look professional to me at all it looks like a quick slap job.

  • @carelesslygeneric
    @carelesslygeneric 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Everyone complaining about this video being unnecessary, or, 'nitpicky, need to stop complaining and take it for what it is. This isnt exactly saying that the mod was done 'wrong' persay, more that it was done in a poor way. What I mean is, that though it worked, it was cosmetically inferior to the revised version, and, was cheaply done, what with the switches not being lined up, and the ridiculous amounts of hot glue (not to mention the lack of the simple solution @Voultar used, using a N64 output, which was arguably much better than a second switch). He was simply revising a 'eh' mod, into a more professionally done one. His criticisms were valid and his work was sound. Stop complaining about the video you chose to watch.

      Editor Damien You know I have actually used chewing gum to repair stripped out board mounts when in the field temporarily because it was all that was available. Fact in order to have strain relief glue is applied away from the solder joints , not directly on them. I have no issues if it is used as an electrical insulator. As far as switches not being inline that is a matter of OCD compulsion. I saw many things that were viewed as my way or no way.
