Titanic is easily the greatest disaster movie that has ever been made or will ever be made. But theres far more to appreciate in this cinematic masterpiece. The love story is one of the greatest and most iconic romances in film history. The sinking sequence is one of the greatest scenes ever captured on film. It grabs you and holds you like nothing before or since. The beautiful score by James Horner is one of the most popular movie soundtracks ever and for good reason. The 3D conversion supervised by James Cameron was the best 3D conversion ever put on film. To see Titanic in IMAX 3D made me feel like I was watching it for the first time

When I was younger especially the boys/men would refuse to watch the movie because it's "just a dumb romance". Now they watch it and tell me: "Girl, this is a f*cking horror movie, wth!"
Yup. It's a horror movie. My biggest fear to be stuck in/on a metal container that is about to get swallowed up by the sea.
Little Fun Fact: There apparently was a Jack Dawson on the Titanic, but he didn't have anything to do with DiCaprios' Jack.

Rose's fiancee didnt actually cared for Rose for the Rose herself, but rather the idea of having her. Rose was seen more of a property of her husband, rather than actual person. He is one of those people who cannot stand losing and smth that he saw as his, taken away from him.

    • @AffanReacts

yeah I definitely felt that from him, I wondered maybe somewhere along the way, maybe just maybe he cared, because often we won't value what we have or in this case who we have, but let's be honest the who is more of a what to Cal, not until someone else shows more love or affection towards it or them, then we start to think maybe what I have is far more valuable than what I think, that sort of thing but nah the guy should have been yeeted off the ship first.

My heart broke for him. What I saw depicted was a man trying to maintain order to avoid more deaths in the middle of the panic and chaos. The look he had on right before he pulled that trigger broke me. Truly heroic man.

I'm at the part where they hit the iceberg I totally understand why you said" I know what happens why do I have hope!?" -- it's actually very sad bc experts have since said that had they not tried to port round it. Had they just hit the iceberg head on, it would've done some damage but that is what the front is for. It could've withstood. And it wouldn't have caused the catastrophic damage it did. In trying to turn to avoid it they sealed their fate. It's unfortunate. Had they not it would've not tore several long gashes and dots of holes in the side, flooded too many compartments and thus it would've been able to stay afloat and they would've been able to hang on for the few hours until that one ship could get there so rescue them.

I like to view her dropping the diamond into the ocean at the end as symbolic, rather than literal, as it also never really existed (though it was based on the massively famous Hope diamond). To Cal, it was a symbol of wealth, his most valuable object used as a claim of ownership of the woman he placed ir on. It marked Rose as also his property, and when he first gave it to her, that is also how she saw it. It's like you were saying about money, and it being neutral, or disloyal. It didn't matter to Rose how much money it was worth, because it was precisely money that was chaining her down, dooming her to a life lived as the property of a man (and a likely to be directly abusive one at that, given how he treated her when she defied him). When the Heart of the Ocean was simply a gift from Cal, it was nothing but a symbol of her captivity and disempowerment.
What gave it value to her was her own choices. She *chose* to let Jack draw her with it because it gave her ownership of it. It allowed it to become something more than its monetary value, and instead of being a symbol of wealth, to her it became a symbol of the poor, wonderful man that made her realize that life was worth living. When he died, it became the reminder of the short time they had together, that changed her life irrevocably. It wasn't valuable because it was expensive or rare, but instead because it was the part of him she had left. In a very real sense, it was her heart that she had given to Jack, and so she did what she promised. She never let go.
At the end, when she drops it into the ovean, it symbolizes her heart going to join Jack's at the end of her life. She sent it back to where it would have ended up if she had died with him that night, because to her, the life she had was the last gift he gave to her, and one so much more valuable than a diamond.

  • @sherra-sama
    @sherra-sama ปีที่แล้ว +3

James Cameron did a lot more than people give him credit for in going for accuracy. Especially with the sinking itself. It was portrayed according to what was known at the time, and he and his brother developed a lot of the deep sea tech that got them down there to get a lot of the undersea footage. I read that anytime you see a shot via the drone, or with one submersible only visible from the outside, those are REAL shots down there. Most of the inside of the ship footage from the outside perspective isn't real, because of all the silt and such, but that one shot of the fireplace via that perspective is actual real footage. It really adds to the haunting feeling, especially when you consider that Titanic has been degrading for over a hundred years, and with what's happened recently, may be some of the last footage we ever get of it before it decomposes entirely.
A lot of the stories and lines you hear about other passengers are true as well. Rose's gossip to Jack when he was dining with them were all real stories of those people. That man telling his little girl "it's goodbye for a little while" is straight from that daughter's memory after the fact. Now, not everything was accurate, obviously. A lot of dramatic license was taken, and actually Cameron apologized to the first officer's family for the portrayal of his character. Nevertheless, when you consider Cameron wanted to impress upon audiences all of the human stories to be told, and how he wrapped it up in a fictional love story for Hollywood, it makes some kind of sense. Documentaries are wonderful, and I've seen very engrossing ones, but there's just something about how it comes to life when you tell it as a story. I would argue that as I've grown older, I care less about the romance aspect of this movie, and much more about the humanist aspect. When you sit and really analyze it, gives you so much to think about.
Also agree with another commenter about the necklace. That was fictional, and it was very symbolic of Rose sending her heart back to the Titanic before she (presumably) passed away. For all we know of Rose's fictional life, it's quite possible she did do a lot of charity in the world, she certainly seemed to have the heart for it. And in reality, museum pieces appraisal rates for such things seem like so much, but realistically you cannot just sell something like that for cash and give it out. Things like fine art and treasures, it's a lot of money passed around in a very small group of people and never really makes it's way into the outside economy. Not to say that I don't understand your feelings on the matter, I certainly do. I just have a small amount of inside knowledge of such matters thanks to my grandfather and his dealings with the Smithsonian.
Anyway, apologies for the long comment, I'm passionate about the subject matter, and I've watched a these few today. I chose to leave this all here because I felt like you, more than a lot of others, showed a genuine reaction, and I really appreciate that. ❤

  • @Everren
    @Everren ปีที่แล้ว +26

It absolutely matters that you’re here and we’re here, and that this film was made. Because through this, we’re remembering the people who died, understanding the weight of that loss-the individual human tragedies, and recognising the mistakes that were made which allowed it to happen, and that’s really important.
Historical fiction invites us to empathise with the past in a way that a documentary or a textbook just can’t. It implores us to put ourselves in the shoes of those who experienced whatever event(s) it references, and, when done well, it can and should change us as a result.
Titanic does a fantastic job of bringing the past to life and showing how and why we should learn from it.
Thank you so much for this wonderful commentary and for your considered thoughts and reflections afterwards. ❤

Personally, I agreed with the man who told Molly, (Kathy Baker) "There'll be one less on this boat, if you don't shut that hole in your face!" I didn't agree with the way he spoke to her, but I did agree with him that taking the boat out there would be dangerous and do no good. They would get swamped, the boat would turn over, and they'd all be f'd. It sucks to think about, but he was telling the truth. I understood his frustration. They were all traumatized and having to listen to people scream while they froze to death. Molly's heart was in the right place, and I loved her, but she had no idea the reprucussions if they had gone. That man did know.

He was like just give it a sec, about 15 other beggars came out of nowhere asking for money too. I wish I could pay them all but I couldn’t, I didn’t have enough for myself let alone others. And the end result was they all fought over that one bill I gave to the first beggar. So in the end I didn’t help, I just created more problems for the first beggar.

For the part where you were questioning if a mark was on the other side of her face. You are correct. The mockup of the ship was only built to be filmed from one side. Then they realized to be historically accurate for the launch scene, they needed to show the other side. The solution was to reverse everything for filming then flip the film. Actors hair was done in reverse, costumes were tailored to button the opposite direction, text reversed, EVERYTHING they could think of, except obviously the actors' faces.

“He put a pistol in his mouth that year” is a line in all the reactions I’ve seen met with “couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy”
Though I hear there was a version of the scene where Cal was looking for Rose on the Carpathia and finds her. He apologizes for everything, swearing to be better, etc since, yaknow… after everything, seeing that many people die, stuck in silence for hours in a boat, somehow being one of the people who survived… after the rush of getting out there are now 2 hours of silence for all of it to hit you, everything that led to you being on a boat you shouldn’t have and losing someone who should have been. That changes a person, but Cal seeming to take that turn, hopefully being a better husband to any future wife than he ever would’ve been to Rose, her rejecting him, bd him accepting it without even trying to get the diamond back it feels a but too much.
There was then one deleted version though where Cal still wasn’t able to find her but was a lot more broken up about it that I think could’ve worked as a good conclusion to his character.

A few years ago, there was an exhibition in a nearby city where they portrayed stuff they had found on the Titanic. Coins, glasses, silverware, etc. In the last room, three giant walls were covered with lists, naming all the victims, while playing the main theme from this movie (not the Celiné Dion version, the movie version). I had to sit down for a moment, it was so heavy. It's easy to forget that this actually happened, this was a real tragedy. Just like we tend to forget about wars, when it's been enough time for it to be a story, when no one is left to remember it. When it's only on the screen. After viewing that exhibition, I see this movie so differently (but in a good way). 💔 (btw, sorry for bad English, it's not my native language)
Btw, these three scenes were improvised; 1. "I'm the King of the World" 2. The table being thrown at breakfast when Cal says Rose is his wife (so Kate's reaction was genuine) and 3. she spitting on him later in the movie (she was supposed to slap him).

Now on Jack and Roses romance, ive heard similar arguments about how Rose is a cheater and yadadayada i dont agree with that very much i mean in a technical sense it was cheating and i never want to justify cheating ever but in the context of Rose specifically she was trapped in quite possibly one of the worst situations in which it got to point where she was willing to take her own life, she was with an abusive man that cared more about money then anything else, her mother much the same cared more about money then anything else she drastically needed a way out and the night she attempted to take the easy way out Jack someone whos not 1st class, who has less then 10 bucks to his name and is actually human and actually cares about her well being saved her physically by helping her back over the rail and saved her and metaphorically by showing her the real world, a better world, and helping her find a way out and Jack didn't force it onto her he simply showed her the way out and gave her the choice if she wanted to take it or not and she took it and ran with it, Jack saved her life in more ways then one and thats whats beautiful about their love story

I know I’m 7 months late to this, but I just found your channel!! Titanic is my favorite movie of all time!! ❤ Fun fact - only Jack, Rose, and a few others are fictional characters. The rest of the cast, including most of the extras in the background, are based on real people. The captain, Mr. Andrews, Murdaugh, Molly Brown, all of them are based on real people and their stories are based on actual events. The story telling is epic and the effects are amazing! They did add and change some things, but a lot of the movie is historically accurate. It’s heartbreaking every time I watch it, and I’m bawling from the middle to the end! Absolutely incredible movie!! A masterpiece of cinematic storytelling!! ❤ It’s completely normal that titanic had this effect on you! It does the same thing to me, too!! That’s the beauty of this movie!!!! Thank you for your vulnerability and candor!! It’s refreshing ❤❤

James Cameron has said himself that Jack was supposed to die. It was in the script. But also that that was a very realistic thing that happened, losing your loved ones. Titanic is such a creepy event, foreshadowing WW1 only 2 years later and everything else that came after. The world was already in free fall in 1912, that way of life, social divides (like the old fashioned sort), women's rights....everything was about to change. This boat was the world in a nutshell.

Jack WAS real actually! Although that wasn't his actual name it was changed to Jack. Joseph Dawson was on record to have been on board when the Titanic sank, however his grave only read J. Dawson, so no one knew his name at the time only his last name but eventually it was discovered that the person Jack was based on was called Joseph instead of Jack. Rose, while her name isn't the same either, she WAS based on a real person; Beatrice Wood, however she wasn't actually on the Titanic but her person is who Rose was based on, a wealthy independent women with a passion for art who traveled the world.

James Cameron's Titanic was a cultural landmark that changed pop culture and aside from all the box office records, it also gained more and more ticket sales every week in stayed in theaters and no other film before or since has ever been able to claim that.

What was your teacher on about? Yeah, everything involving Jack and Rose was made up, but Cameron was incredibly accurate with historical people and details. Even specifics such as Quartermaster Hitchens being the one on the wheel when it hit, then being the one arguing with Molly Brown in the lifeboat about going back, and Frederic Fleet being in the same boat with them; and Charles Joghuin, the ship's pastry chef being on the back of the stern as it goes down. There's also a deleted scene of him helping to throw things overboard for people to hold onto, which he also did. Also, Harold Lowe being the one officer who decided to go back for survivors. The only historical thing that the movie had people cross over was Murdoch's suicide. This was because of survivor accounts saying that an officer shot himself on the side that he was watching but it was never confirmed whom it was.

all information comes from the inquaries by survivors and the book titanic voices from the disaster
according to newspapers the crowed on the docks moved with Titanic until they came to the end of the warf
By Sunday morning, first class passenger Colonel Archibald Gracie headed for the gymnasium. “I was up early before breakfast and met the professional racquet player in a half hour’s warming up,” he said. Then he headed to F Deck,to the Titanic’s pool, for “a swim in the six-foot deep tank of salt water, heated to a refreshing temperature.” Meanwhile, science teacher Lawrence Beesley spent a peaceful Sunday afternoon in the second class library. It was a clear day, and people were excited about landing in New York on Wednesday, with calm weather all the way.
After dinner, Lawrence and about a hundred other passengers gathered around a piano in the second class dining saloon to sing hymns.Reverend Ernest Carter, who organized the gathering, closed the evening by saying that this was “the first time that there have been hymns sung on this boat on a Sunday evening, but we trust and pray it won’t be the last.” It was after ten o’clock when they stopped to enjoy some biscuits and coffee. Then Lawrence headed to his cabin on D Deck (D56),to read in his bunk before
going to sleep. On Sunday night the sky was bright with stars, and the first class dining saloon glittered too.May Futrelle was traveling with her husband, Jacques, a writer. She never forgot Sunday night’s dinner in the elegant saloon, when many women wore the fine dresses they’d just purchased in Paris. “It was a brilliant crowd. Jewels flashed from the gowns of the women,” May said later. “And, oh, the dear women, how fondly they wore their latest Parisian gowns! It was the first time that most of them had an opportunity to display their newly acquired finery.”
“It was all so quiet, but how penetratingly cold it had become! Little wisps of mist like tiny fairies wafted gently inboard from the sea and left my face clammy. I shivered,” said Violet. “It was indeed a night for bed, warmth,
and cozy thoughts of home and firesides. I thought of the man in the crow’s nest as I came indoors, surely an unenviable job on such a night.”
Captain Smith left the bridge about 9:25 p.m.,saying to Lightoller, “ ‘If it becomes at all doubtful let me know at once; I will be just
    inside.’”
    testamony of the collision:
“It was not a loud crash; it was felt almost as much as heard. . . . I sat up in bed and looked out of the nearest port. I saw an iceberg only a few feet away, apparently racing aft at high speed and crumbling as it went. I knew right away what that meant.”
    - Henry Harper,first class passenger
“The sensation to me was as if the ship had been seized by a giant hand and shaken once, twice then stopped dead in its course,” she said.But“. . . I was not thrown out of my berth, and my husband staggered on his feet only slightly. We heard no strange sounds . . . but we noticed that the engines had stopped running . . .”
“To those who showed concern, a reassuring answer was forthcoming: ‘There are plenty of lifeboats in the vicinity; they’ll be with us any moment now.’”
    - Violet Jessop “Women and children first; men had to save themselves as they could. When Elna and I came up all the lifeboats were crowded,so no rescue was possible . . . You have to try to imagine it - the last moment I saw my dear sister stand there with little Thelma tightly in her arms.”
    - Ernst Persson, third class passenger
“Striking the water was like a thousand knives being driven into one’s body, and, for a few moments, I completely lost grip of myself - and no wonder for I was perspiring freely, whilst the temperature of the water was 28 degrees,or four degrees below freezing.
    aftermath:
"When the Carpathia arrived in New York at 9:30 pm on the cold and rainy evening of April 18, 1912, the ship first bypassed Pier 54, its home Cunard Line pier, and sailed up the river to Pier 59, the berth for the White Star Line, to drop off the empty lifeboats. Pier 59 is where the Titanic was supposed to have arrived. The Carpathia then sailed back to Pier 54 to let off the booked passengers and the survivors of the doomed ship. Tens of thousands of people gathered around Pier 54 to meet them and to hear the stories of the maritime disaster. A tug boat filled with photographers followed the ship to the pier, and the flashlight of cameras lit up the ship in the night sky to reveal that the decks were crammed with passengers."

I love how everyone criticizes Cal for using a child to escape, ignoring the fact that by doing so he saved two lives: his own and the child's. And if you consider it selfish, that in order to save your life you must also save someone else's life, then in this case I want all people to be selfish. And what was he to do? No one cared about the child, except for him. It is also interesting that the member of the ship's crew who threw the money at Cal said a noble thing about the fact that the money would not save him, at the same time killed both lives: Tommy and his own.

    • @AffanReacts
      @AffanReacts  ปีที่แล้ว +4

I like your thought process, looking at the bright side. But you forgot one major thing. Cal isn’t interested in any life, not even his own as we find out at the end. He did try to shoot Rose and Jack, so while I get your point, this isn’t the guy to apply that point to.

@@AffanReacts You may be right, but I don't think Cal is a real bastard in this movie. On the contrary, for me he is a positive character. I'll say an unpopular opinion, but I hated Rose and Jack the whole movie. And it annoys me that the director specifically makes him a villain, but if you analyze it, he did less bad things. And about the fact that he shot himself, we don’t know what really happened, most likely depression and not happy life were the cause of all this. Still, it's fair to say that the real villain in the movie is Rosa's mother.

    • @AffanReacts

That being said, Rose married another man...but bounces on him in the afterlife for her 1 night stand 😂 that isn't my favorite but Cal was trash.

I will not have these slanderous comments about me… I don’t even know who much is, let alone talk to much.

I still think that's too little for a first class passenger to give as a reward for rescuing his fiancee. For context, he would have spent £870 (or $4,350) for that large suite, which would be over $100,000 (in both pounds and dollars) today!
He should have at least offered $100.
