    So, this is totally my bad and I do apologize, and I definitely should've commented this earlier, but I did have a bad brainfart during my end talks and said that I thought the iceberg part wasn't actually true-- I literally could not tell you why in that moment my brain thought that, but it was literally just an honest mistake from me and I apologize!

    • @imagaybanana2004
      @imagaybanana2004 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Lmao brainfarts happen. But yeah, as far as historical accuracy goes, the movie is brilliantly done, and given the information they had while making the movie in 1995-1996, it’s incredibly well done, and about as close will probably ever get. Of course nowadays, we have more information about how the ship broke in half, and how it hit the iceberg, and things like that. By the way, to answer another one of your questions in your conclusion discussion, Jack and Rose, and their whole love story, as well as most of the main characters in the movie, are all fictional. But pretty much all of the other characters, like captain Smith, Thomas Andrews, Bruce Ismay, Margaret Brown, John Jacob Astor, etc. they were all real people on board the ship. James Cameron and his team did an unbelievable amount of research and studying to make this movie, and they painstakingly re-created a good chunk of the interiors of the titanic, and they built a nearly full scale set of the exterior of the ship. If you’re interested, I highly recommend watching the behind the scenes to the movie on TH-cam. It’s extremely fascinating, and it really gives you a lot of respect to the amount of work put into the movie. anyway, sorry for my rambling, I am a huge titanic nerd. Lolz 🤓

    One bit of trivia that sadly goes unmentioned by most is the awe inspiring heroism of the Carpathias crew. If you remember, Captain White was told that Carpathia was 3 hours away. She was not, she was in fact 4 hours away at her top speed yet she arrived in 3. Her maximum speed was 14 knots, but the crew pushed her boilers FAR beyond maximum pressure and shoveled coal like men posessed, bringing her speed up to 17 knots. By all logic what they did was near suicide and spoke to their bravery that they were willing to sacrifice everything to try and render aid. Much like the 9/11 Boatlift (largest maritime evacuation in history) the Carpathia is a bit of maritime heroism that truly deserves to be better known.

      Another point, they actually permanently damaged the engines by pushing her that hard, they also were dodging ice and that when twilight broke the crew was horrified to have been surrounded by so much big icebergs that they couldn’t see before during the night. Miracle she made it to the site without collision.

      The California was so close it could see the rockets and lights...I remember they were heavily critisized (Called cowards and such) for not doing anything. It was speculated they could have saved most of the people that were in the water had they done something.

      @@ryomirelandil917 you have to remember a few things:
      1. Radios were not manned 24 hours a day. Their radio operator had gone to sleep already. The last message I believe they had from titanic was the titanic telling him to shut up and go away. (Titanic had just come into range of the newfoundland radio relay and was trying to get all the backlog of passenger messages out. Californian was trying to chat about nothing important and it irritated titanic.)
      2. Titanic was actually in a thermal inversion due to the Labrador Current. The same air mirage that kept titanic from seeing the iceberg sooner also distorted her silhouette from a distance. The Californian would likely not have recognized her light silhouette, if they could see her clearly at all. Titanic was viewed as nearly unsinkable and no ship had gone down from an iceberg before, so they would have had no reason to really suspect anything was happening.

  • @toxicginger9936
    @toxicginger9936 2 ปีที่แล้ว +281

    50:10 It WAS an iceberg that fatally damaged the Titanic. That was not just for cinematic drama. That entire "forensic" account of how it hit the iceberg, how the ship was damaged by it, and how it sank is fully historically accurate to the information they had when making the movie on how the Titanic went down. James Cameron wanted to be as accurate as possible to honor the ship and those lost.

    • @Dularr

      Part of the speculation is if they did not change course and hit the iceberg head on it would have crushed the front portions of the ship stayed afloat.

    • @XeonAlpha
      @XeonAlpha 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@Dularr I haven’t researched it enough to opine confidently but it’s certainly plausible. Titanic’s fatal flaw was the rupture of too many of the water-tight sections. Hitting head on may very well have only damaged one or two and kept her afloat. That being said hitting a solid object head on at full steam might also have buckled the ship regardless. Keep in mind the Titanic was primarily made of iron which is very brittle.

      @@johncampbell756 she did split in half exactly as described. James Cameron has followed up with multiple visits go the wreck (more than any other single person iirc) and they have plotted every location of debris, and added that to a simulation. The locations of the debris establishes that she could not have gone under in a single piece, and the location of the two halves are such that had she broken on descent instead of at the surface, they could not be located where they are with the damage that they have.
      They also determined that the steel hull was actually less brittle than usual hulls of the day as they used the best grade steel available. Even the rivets, while certainly brittle by modern standards, met or exceeded standards of the time. The sheer physics of the two objects colliding at speed was just too much and is what caused the rivet seam to split. Had she hit the iceberg head on, it wouldn't have changed the outcome, though it may have bought enough time for the carpathia to arrive.

      The old couple portrayed Isidor and Ida Strauss. It is written:
      "After the Civil War, they moved to New York City, where (Isidore's father) Lazarus convinced Rowland Hussey Macy, founder of Macy's, to allow L. Straus & Sons to open a crockery department in the basement of his store.
      "Isidor Straus worked at L. Straus & Sons, which became the glass and china department at Macy's. In 1888, he and Nathan Straus became partners of Macy's. Several wealthy and powerful people died on the Titanic. Benjamin Guggenheim (yes, that one) who dressed up to go down as a gentleman, John Jacob Astor, Isador and Ida Straus, owners of Macy’s Department Store, portrayed holding each other in bed as their cabin flooded. They held to a gentleman’s code of honor and didn’t try to use their influence to secure a spot on the lifeboats. Bruce Ismay, the owner, was shunned and despised by many the rest of his life because he took a boat to safety. Officer Lightoller stayed until the end and survived by swimming to a lifeboat. He survived another ship sinking in the war and helped evacuate British soldiers from Dunkirk. Survivors recalled the band playing until the very end. The engineers below decks gave their lives to keep the electricity on as long as possible and the telegraph operators stayed at their post until the end as well. I think one or both survived. There are many examples of selfless heroism from passengers and especially the crew who gave their all trying to save lives. Honor meant something then.

    As someone who has studied the Titanic since Jr High - 35 years - I can tell you that this is the most historically accurate version of the event ever put on film, and likely that ever will be put on film. Jack and Rose and the related characters are fictitious but almost every other single character presented is real, and the design of the ship is accurate down to railings, lights, carpets etc.
    One thing Cameron did that I don't understand - the character portrayed by Bernard Fox, referred to as both Archie and Colonel is Col. Archibald Gracie. Fox (who was in the other great Titanic film A Night to Remember in the 1950s) portrayed him as an older British dandy of sorts. In reality, Gracie was 54 and a very physically fit, athletic American. He survived the sinking by standing on the overturned lifeboat you saw briefly through the night. He wrote the first book about the sinking, but died in late in 1912 from causes related to the ordeal of the sinking (he was diabetic and the hypothermia he suffered aggravated his condition severely).
    Also - in this film and in many others, there is always a gratuitous scene of stokers clambering to get through the watertight doors as they closed - the clear sense conveyed being that if they didn't they'd be trapped and drown. Not true. All the compartments had ladders which could be climbed to escape flooding compartments. Think about it - if they'd have been trapped and unable to escape, the water would have been sealed in too and the ship may not have sunk. Many climbed to safety, and that's the same route the water took as it flooded each compartment in turn.

      @@beneddiected It's actually not. I made a comment comparing the two some months ago. It's on one of these Titanic videos, but I couldn't find it. In a nutshell, while the two movies have many similarities, Titanic (1997) has just a bit more accuracy than A Night to Remember. The sets are better designed, as are some of the costumes. A Night to Remember has a christening scene that never happened. Obviously, the ship doesn't break apart in A Night to Remember.
      Now, neither movie is all that accurate with what we know today, but Titanic (1997) is more historically correct. Personally, I feel A Night to Remember is the better Titanic movie, however. I love Cameron's movie, I've seen it hundreds of times. I just don't care for Rose's character at all and find some of the romance plot somewhat distracting.

    It still amazes me that they built so much of the ship for this film. I mean half of the ship was basically built. Then all the set pieces were fine tuned and made from the same manufacturer of the Titanic. While Jack and Rose weren't specific passengers on the ship there was a couple similar to them.. and there are people acting as some of the actual passengers of the Titanic. Like Molly Brown, Mr. Andrews, ship captain, etc. James Cameron really did something when he made this film.

    Cameron literally rebuilt the Titanic for this film, as CGI was too primitive at the time to fulfill his vision for the movie. And then it was sunk all over again, with many of the scenes having only one possible take. I can't imagine how stressful the whole thing was. And this even solved one lingering mystery of the sinking, as when the wreck was first discovered, people were baffled that much of the grand staircase was missing despite a lot of other wood being in good enough condition that it couldn't just be natural decay. Then when the scene of the staircase being flooded was filmed, that exact section broke away and sailed off, so that now it's largely agreed that's what happened in the real ship too.

    Here's a creepy tidbit: there's a book called Futility, written by Morgan Robertson, which features a section set on a ship called the Titan, the largest ever built and said to be unsinkable, so no one worries much that it can only hold enough lifeboats for a fraction of the people onboard. But then it hits an iceberg and sinks with massive loss of life. The book was written in 1898.

      So, in the book, Titan is 800 feet long, has a yacht-like bow, and is 80,000 gross register tons, meaning she's shorter than Titanic with the overall size of Queen Mary. She sails on her third transatlantic voyage in April when she hits an iceberg. She hits the iceberg so hard her hull rises up on top of it a little before she rolls over and sinks within minutes. The rest of the book is about the main protagonist, a sailor working on the ship, trying to save a little girl while being trapped atop the iceberg.
      At a glance, there are a lot of similarities. Titan vs. Titanic. Both disasters happen in April. Each ship was close in length. Both ships were called unsinkable. Both were the largest in the world when they sank. The book was actually revised after April 1912 to make it more accurate to what a real-life ship might be like in that situation (and to mooch a little off the disaster). The author himself denied all precognition, however, stating he was just knowledgeable about ocean liners, which he was.

      @@migiplayz91 That would be neat, but no. The Olympic class (Olympic, Titanic, and eventually Britannic) were inspired by Cunard's Lusitania and Mauretania, which in turn were inspired by Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, which was the first four-funneled liner ever constructed in 1897. Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was inspired by the White Star Line's RMS Teutonic in 1889. Basically, shipping companies all copied each other, each one trying to do something that the other did not. It's why all ocean liners back in the day looked the same and while cruise ships today all look the same.

I might recommend checking out James Cameron's other ocean-based disaster film, The Abyss from 1989 (the director's cut). It was quite possibly one of the most technically complicated and grueling movies ever made and may have given Cameron more confidence to tackle Titanic a few years later.

    In fairness to the Titanic's designers, the damage the iceberg caused was far beyond what any of them could have ever imagined or designed for. As for the lifeboats, the thinking was not to evacuate all the passengers and crew onto lifeboats. The lifeboats were only meant to ferry people to a rescue ship. In may other sinkings, like the Andrea Doria, this is exactly how the rescue played out. In Titanic's case, too many circumstances were stacked against her.

    The old couple in the bed were the founders and owners of Macy's Department Store. The death by falling Funnel that was given to Fabrizio actually happened to John Jacob Astor (when they found the body, they had to identify him by his wedding ring, and so were able to tell he'd been hit by a falling funnel due to the damage). "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" was given to Margaret Brown, played by Kathy Bates, but Margaret never used the name Molly. No one called her Molly to her face. It was, in fact, done for a movie and stuck. She helped organize the women in her life boat to row away from then towards the ship during the sinking and aftermath. She was considered a fine leader and organized charities afterwards.
    All of the second class children survived. Only one first class child died. Most of the third class children died. Despite popular belief, one of the stokers (men in the engine room) DID survive. Fred Barrett, who managed to make it onto a life boat as a staff member rower. He is the only engine man to have survived. One of the engineers broke his leg as they were escaping the closing water tight door, he was placed in a room while the rest of the engine staff tried to help others. This man died. There is a grave in Halifax cemetery among the Titanic graves. It is labelled J Dawson, but it was not Jack as some believe. Jack and Rose were fictional. J Dawson is believed to have been one of the stokers.
    I have so many more facts about crew, survivors, and victims. I'm sure many of them have already been pit in the comments. If you want good information about the people of Titanic, researched and supported by letters, etc. try: www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivors/ it goes into their life histories, if it can, and even provides pictures and life boat information.

He said afterwards that he went back to his room and chugged some whiskey, came back to the deck and along with Thomas Andrew's threw deck chairs to people in the water. He credits his survival to being absolutely shit faced. He also said his upper body never got wet as the ship did not pull anyone down like in the film. He was able to just step off at the last second and the ship gently disappeared below him.

    Couple fun facts :
    1. A lot of the characters in the movie and names used are based on real people who were on the Titanic. A surprising amount of them in fact. They also found actors that at least closely resembled the actual person. Comparisons of the Captain and other to their real life photos are striking, the casting director did an incredible job.
    2. A lot of background dialogue is based off of real conversations overheard by passengers in dining areas and while walking the deck the first few days. Conversations such as the man who said he wanted more speed and a reason for headlines, that was a real conversation reported by a passenger after surviving the initial wreckage.
    Same with tidbits like first class passengers having a hate on for Molly Brown, because she was a real person who was in fact what they called 'new money'.
    3. There's interesting little nods to historical accuracy. From what I remember, there was a staff member who worked in maintenance or some related department, and he had the only key to the binoculars cabinet. He ended up being offboarded before departure (for some reason I can't remember), and just so happened to forget to leave the key behind. With a ship that big not being able to reroute back for a single key, they just relied on the lookouts being able to see anything coming well in advance because there weren't many reports of icebergs at that time of year, from their knowledge. And so the short scene between the lookouts where they don't have binoculars is actually historical fact, rather than just being an oversight by James Cameron for the sake of the plot.
    There's tons of other fascinating things to point out. And if you're interested, there's tons of videos on the behind-the-scenes, as well as breakdowns of the historical accuracy in documentary form. 😊👌

I love that you mention "a lot of safety measures could have happened" because it was because of the sinking of Titanic that we have a lot of the safety measures today, such as: enough lifeboats for all aboard, lifeboat drills for any ship with more than 50 passengers, requiring radios to be on 24/7 (the Californian was much closer to the Titanic but its radio operator had gone to bed and turned the radio off), and monitoring for icebergs, just to name a few.

    The iceberg popped the rivets per historical ansylsis which separated plates. The bulkheads between compartments were not water tight. Also there is a whole documentary on a rare weather occurance that was going on that caused things on the horizon to appear to shift down below the actual horizon. Its why they were not properly identifed by the nearby ship. It also probably contributed to not seeing the iceberg.

    • @SweetLou0523
      @SweetLou0523 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, thermal inversion caused by the warm air and the frigid water temp of the Labrador current. Add in the moonless night and they had no chance. The binocular theory wouldn't have made a difference. Even with binoculars, that iceberg would've been obscured by the mirage until it was too late.
      The bulkheads were watertight, but not all the way up. Had she just had a hole punched in her without the additional rivet separation at the seam, it would have been survivable. Because so many compartments were taking on water, she went bow down far enough for the water to pass over the bulkheads and that's what doomed her.

    One thing I love about this movie is the details pertaining to actual stories of people.
    Like :
    The man who is drinking while on the rail with Rose & Jack as Titanic sinks. He was a real man. A baker who gave up a seat on a lifeboat to a younger worker and decided since he was going to die he would drink as much as he could beforehand. He was considered the last or one of the last off the boat..and survived.
    The priest was real too. He was with his daughter and sister and also gave up a seat on a lifeboat. He stayed back, knowing he would die, just in hopes he could save the souls of passangers before they died. He was seen asking a man if he wanted to convert, the man got huffy and the priest took his life belt, handed it to him and said, "You need this more than I do." He comforted others until the end.
    The elderly couple in the bed as water fills the room is the founder of Macys and his wife. She refused to leave him behind.
    When the captain is being told to put the engines full speed there is a mother and child at the table behind them. The mother keeps looking over. The mother was the first person to tell that she heard Esmey tell Smith he wanted to make headlines. She said she heard them while having tea while they at a table next to her.
    Things like that are sprinkled all throughout the movie and I appreciate it so much.

    One of the things that disappointed me about this movie was the take on Ismay: documentation at the inquest gave evidence that he did not act this way, did not try to take authority away from Captain Smith; and in fact, helped with the loading of the lifeboats, only taking one as it was going down, and partially at the insistent request of the office (I think it was Lowe, but am not sure), because Ismay was letting his despair get in the way of his efficiency. He was hammered by the press, and spent the rest of his life in misery. Cameron could have taken this opportunity to remedy Ismay's reputation a little, but chose to go with the insulting legend. It adds nothing to the story and it could have been remedied. It disappoints me that he didn't do this.

      So he never told him to speed up the ship then? You're saying that part's false? Because if that really did happen, the sinking is mostly his fault. I can't really blame anyone, including Cameron for not being fond of Ismay, knowing that he's the reason the Titanic sank.

    • @melenatorr
      @melenatorr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@BeautyMonster1000 Correct. He did not. He was on the ship as a passenger and an observer; and he was well acquainted with the rule that was brought up at the inquest: The captain is the boss on the ship. He did not and could not command. If he requested it, Captain Smith would have been within his rights and his responsibility to refuse, and Ismay would have had to bow to the captain. And he knew this.

      Oh. If you like, I found an exchange from my Kindle copy of Wyn Craig Wade's "The Titanic: Disaster of the Century", which is an examination of the inquest. Here's part of the questioning of Captain Rostron of the Carpathia by Senator Smith:
      “Captain, is it customary to take orders from a director or a general officer of the company aboard?”
      “No, sir.”
      “From whom do you take orders?”
      “From no one.”
      "Aboard ship?”
      “At sea, immediately I leave port until I arrive at port, the captain is in absolute control and takes orders from no one. I have never known it in our company or any other big company when a director or a managing owner would issue orders on the ship. It matters not who comes on board the ship, they are either passengers or crew. There is no official status and no authority whatever with them.”

      @@BeautyMonster1000 for historical reference, it was standard operation for a ship to 'speed up' when near icebergs.
      The thinking at the time was the faster you go, the sooner you'll be out of the ice field.

    • @gokulgopan4397
      @gokulgopan4397 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. The whole conversation was portrayed wrong. Based on Elizabeth lines' testimony, they were discussing about Titanic's perfomance exceeding their expectations. Ismay was excited and positive about it. Ismay asked if they could do a speed test to see if Titanic could beat Olympic's crossing time she made on her maiden voyage. These speed tests were normal. It was scheduled for Monday or Tuesday.
      Even if he wanted to make headlines by arriving early and make a surprise, he knows the problems following it. The problems in disembarking if schedule was not followed.
      It was Ismay's long time rival William Hearst who grabbed the perfect opportunity to defame him.

    I am a Titanic freak. I watch all the documentaries. I've seen all the movies. Of course, with this being the newest of them, the special effects are amazing! The boat DID hit an iceberg & the boat sunk due to the damage & boats poor construction. Rose & Jack were fictional character's. Molly (Margaret) Brown was real & she really helped other women into the other life boat. She died in N.Y. in 1932 at age 65. They made a movie about her called the Unsinkable Molly Brown with Debbie Reynolds. I started crying when the old couple cuddled in bed. Then when the leader of the orchestra said that it was on honor to play with the other members. Another horrible thing about this tragedy. White Star Lines billed the orchestra's families for the unreturned uniforms worn by the musicians when they died. Another great reaction.

    There's two major jokes about the movie that are both total crap. First, that everyone knows the ending, as if the movie tries to play it like a final twist rather than spending its entire second half on the sinking (and since the film is three hours long, that's pretty much a feature film on its own). Second, that there's clearly enough room on the floating door for both of them, when the issue is that it can't stay floating under the weight of two people. Cameron actually removed some dialogue pointing this out, as he figured the bit where they both try to get on and the door tips over would be enough for people to get the idea.

When Rose first boards the Titanic, she is su*cidal and feels stuck, and through meeting Jack who gets her to open up and see there is more to life than having old money, she finds the strength to continue living. Their video essay explains it 100x better than I ever could but I think you'd like it! th-cam.com/video/A4FvI1r3rIg/w-d-xo.html

      Also, fun fact: after the making of the movie, they found a passenger named J. Dawson. His name was Joseph Dawson, though. I have a ton of other fun facts, like the Californian was a ship that was closer to the Titanic, but it didn't come to save the passengers because Titanic used colored fireworks, when red were used for distress signals. Also, there was only 1 Japanese person on the ship, and he was hated for surviving and not giving up his spot on the life boat. There was also 1 African American family: all of them survived except the husband (father). I thought it was really interesting that only 1 first class child died: her, her mother, and her father were separated from her baby brother and their servant. The parents took the infant girl to look for the baby brother, who ended up on a lifeboat with the servant. The infant died with her parents, while the baby brother lived until the age of 18, when he died from food poisoning. And, James Cameron did dive down to the actual Titanic to film the beginning part. Also, if you were wondering, the scene where they are on the stairs, about to go to dinner: Jack says Nickelodeon, which was a theatre type of show in the early 1900s. My favorite part: Rose dies in the end scene after showing the pictures of her doing everything she was planning to do with Jack, and really cool: the clock in the ending scene shows the time that the actual Titanic sank completely.
      Sorry this was so long. I'm 13 yrs old, btw, I just really love Titanic.

    And the ship did hit an iceberg. The design that supposedly made Titanic unsinkable was undone by the iceberg slicing along the side of the ship. It's been said that if they had not turned but just smacked head-on into the iceberg it might not have sank. But it did hit an iceberg.

All the girls were wearing the heart of the ocean after seeing it. 😁 A lot of the side characters were based on the actual people. Molly Brown, the captain, the guy who designed it, a lot of the rich people. There's a documentary of how the ocean floor looks around where it sank. Things are laying there like it was yesterday. What got me and still does today is the fact this happened. It’s imagining the horror of that experience. Also they said many who died were third class passengers. The interior and hallways of the ship were like a maze to navigate already now imagine being terrified while doing it and not being able to read English that well (many were immigrants). If you watch in the background, there are 3rd class passengers frantically trying to translate via an little book what one of the signs on the wall said while everyone is frantically trying to get above deck.

      Mythbusters only proved they fit on the door but not that they could have survived: 1. They experiment was not done in freezing cold and salty water like the north atlantic (the mythbusters pointed that out), cold and hypothermia has a negative effect in your decision making process and judgment, 2. They both had protective gear while they were in the water and on the door, only one had a lifejacket like Rose that they used (not show how much time it took thanks to editing) and tied under the door for buoyancy, but that’s were the experiment stops.
      So they didn’t really prove anything since they didn’t recreate the exact condicions the victims that died on the water suffered, they tried first in a tank with dolls on scale with there sizes and weight and with the same material for the door -it was made of white oak- and the they sunk door included.
      See, they both fit on the door sure, but with both of them on, they were still in contact with the water, in the case of Jack and Rose hours in freezing cold water without protective gear, hypothermia setting in and thousands of people screaming in pain and asking for help.

But what they didn't count on was the ship having such a long scrape against an iceberg that five compartments were breached, so that the sheer weight of the water pulled the front down until the water could spill over the top of the doors into the next, increasing the problem unstoppably as it went along (imagine dunking an ice cube tray into water diagonally).
