The Bulls Are Out & One Of Them Is Starting To Turn Angry! Potential Contract Calf

  • The bulls are out and doing their thing but one of them is starting to turn a bit grumpy so I'm keeping my distance from him, Only a couple more week then they will go to the works, I'm pretty sure I'll only do 9 week mating this year.
    Calves are getting ready to head to Grazing and got bit of a surprise in the mail with a potential contract...how ever I don't think the calf is that good so have pretty low expectations

    Please be careful around the bulls, when I was farming we worked with Hereford bulls, I was told that all the dairy breeds are dangerous but the most dangerous is the Jersey!
    Love to hear about your system and choices

      I haven’t worked with too many other breeds but jersey ones certainly are notorious for being worse than the others. Wait till I have to get them on the truck soon 😅

    If your not keeping any replacement from your bulls, could u keep back 6 or 8 bull calves of your own every year save ye buying them ??? Keep up the hard work, watching from ireland

    What happens to the fish when you clean the troughs? Do the fish produce dirt? What kind of fish and from where?
    What kind of gates do you have in the shed? Do the first cows ever shy away from them and what do you do to push them up?
    Great videos Andrew

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Put them in a bucket and then tip them back in at the end. They are just gold fish, they sort of clean the trough a little bit.
      Just normal gates on hinges, you get the odd cow that really doesn’t like being in the front but they’re usually pretty good

    Another good one Andrew. My Jersey bull- two and half years old- spends his days rolling logs into fences, turning over water troughs and shoving machinery up against gates so that I can't open them, and growling and threatening every time he sees me. He's off on a big adventure to the saleyards next Tuesday. The agent asked me what weight I reckoned he'd be- no idea. What say you Andrew? What weight do yours usually go?

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer

      Good time to see the back of him! I was trying to find last years weights but I must of deleted the email, so I really don’t know sorry.

    Hey mate, what are your key contributing factors to getting mastitis this time of year up in the north ? Are conditions more wet than normal for you guys ? I'm down here in northern southland (near gore). Good to hear ssc is doing well, for comparison in southland @ this time of year we are sitting 100-120. The vids are great! Cheers

      Hey man, and interested topic! I’ve only had the odd case in the young herd, like 2-3 cases in the last couple of years so I think maybe the feed pad has something to do with it, they pick it up from that at time to time. And also when we do get the odd shower or rainy day I’m sure they’re more prone to getting it then.
      That’s pretty good, you’d be happy with that?

  • @cdemo1186

    Sweet as Andrew.
    Question for ya.
    How do you and your dad pick your Bull's? Are they good stock like what you choose for a.i -ing?
    That buck in the field really didn't want you in there with his women.

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s easy as, I ring the stock agent and say I want 4 then he buys them for us 👍
      I think they’ve come from the same place for the last couple of years and they have been really good.
      We don’t keep any heifers from him so it doesn’t matter to much about them
      Nah he’s getting a lot worse 😅

    Good to see your scc is better, what’s your season average so far? Better than last year? Yeah I think you are a bit light on bull power. Have you thought about leasing bulls? Great video and yes I love the south👌

      103 STD compared to 130 last year, so pretty happy with that.
      Yeah I always get told that haha but it seems to work alright, I have thought about it and probably a good option but then you don’t know what bulls your getting temperate wise, would be way easier though 👍

  • @michaelbutler5213

    What is the cost of doing an auto drafting gate? Seems that it would really do you well getting one not just for AI(ie:drafting mastitis cows) seems that you have everything else to make it it work , Really enjoy the videos keep well

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Drafting gates about 40k plus all the pipe work etc.
      would be really really cool having one but we don’t have the room out the front to make it work, you need quite a long race once the cows exit.
      If we extend the shed in the next couple of years it’s definitely something to take into consideration though.
      Thanks Michael appreciate it 👍

    Use black angus for clean up bulls we use them on our lower quality heifers because angus calves come out of them no problem

  • @pjdee5879
    @pjdee5879 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you select your stock bulls specially for their milk potential? If you were able to get a beef bull what breed would you choose as suitable for a Jersey given their size?

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, bulls aren’t selected on anything, only keep replacements from AI cows.
      I think there’s a lot probably suitable, angus is pretty popular but bulls have to have low birthweight so calves are a bit smaller.
      I think charolais are good too, as they throw smaller calves but have good growth rates

    • @pixie706
      @pixie706 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen difficult calvings in pure charollais herds so wouldn't dare use one on a small heifer

  • @yvonneward

    Andrew you and your family just have to stay where you are lol
    On the AI as good as technology has become more and more nope we have bulls for a reason not just beef I won’t go into how the male population would feel but that’s another can for another day , the bulls you have are all good looking and should turn out some great calves, which are looking good I would be a rubbish farmer I’d just not want to get rid of any great video x😊

    • @thuurspatjens9895
      @thuurspatjens9895 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They eat the grass and other feed that falls out of the mouth of the cows when the cows are drinking, this keeps the water clean
