I feel your pain, Gary. The curse of the EV has meant that folk who dislike them, like me, are holding on to their ICE cars for as long as possible. That’s pushing used values of ICE cars up. I used to buy car magazines weekly and monthly for over 25 years. I gave up 5 years ago because every story is about a boring EV. I couldn’t give a f@@k about it. New car prices are absolutely ridiculous, and I would like to know their excuse as to why they cost so much now. We are just being ripped off due to greed and nothing else and people are stupid enough in this country to keep buying them.
It's true. The jump in prices used to be gradual, now it's steep. From what I've seen around, the costs have gone up dramatically (components, electricity . labour etc) , raw materials . Also, some brands pack too much technology in their cars. Another story I've heard is that car companies produce less cars but charge more for them (higher profit/high demand).
and the new led headlights are terrible on some cars the drl are too bright ( never mind the dip beams) and too sporadic , especially when some cunt is tailgating you

Your absolutly bang on mate, I've been searching for ages to find a decent priced family car and eventually went for a 2019 A4 avant. While looking I noticed new nissan quashqai's were touching 40k. Absolutly mental for an everyday family motor. PCP deals making it easier to get into them but never owning it is partly to blame for high costs if you ask me
Agreed, although my wife and I have decent jobs I cannot understand how people can afford new car prices even on a pcp deal.I saw a 'deal' for a new civic 37k otr.6k+deposit and 500 per month. Thats 30k for 48 months and a car you will have to give back! Crazy😮
You’re not wrong - it’s crazy at the minute, currently got a lightly modified mk8 fiesta st with just under 24k miles and I keep fancying a swap to an Audi s3 sport back, but the prices for them are ridiculous &/or the ones in my price bracket have all done mega miles, same with the golf r’s too! Went to look at a potential car recently (went to look at what looked like a very nicely specced 420d Beemer) that looked great in the pictures and the salesman told me how “they only buy the best examples “, got there and every panel had marks/scratches on , all 4 wheels wanted refurbishing & as soon as I pointed this out things went sour and the money they offered me for my car suddenly wasn’t attainable anymore- the deal fell apart🤷♂️
I agree, 5 or 10 years ago I could buy an old Volvo for £500, the same Volvo post covid is now five times as much and also well over the insurance write off value. Everyone is in survival mode including car dealerships.
My opinion is that since the days of WBAC, people are selling their cars to dealers so less lower priced private sales. And the shortage in micro chips so car makers are only selling mid to higher spec'd new cars, no basic models, therefore pushing the price of 2nd hand cars up, especially low spec models as time goes on they'll be less common.
We've had a very similar experience whilst looking for an S-Max Titanium Sport X. Every one we looked at within what we thought was a reasonable budget were complete dogs. Eventually ended up forking out £11,000 for a 62 plate with 84K. The used car market is utter madness.
you can always walk away there are plenty of dealers out there with good prices if they want to stay in business, before parting with your cash get an independant check and valuation such as carcheck or vcheck
100% correct mate. I was looking at 2015 Golf R's in 2019 and ithey were c.£16k. Now the same 2015 Golf R is £19k and 4 years older !! Plus insurance quotes... mine are now over £1000 for one instead of £600. Crazy times. 😮
Recently bought a 2 year old kuga for the family, there was a focus ST in the showroom, it was £40,000!!! 40k for a ford focus, its absolutlely bonkers! Im meant to be treating myself to an RS next year, might just spend the money on the garden instead 😂
I agree it's a bit of a stalemate situation. The best advice I'd say is to hold onto whatever car you have right now. The market is crazy expensive. The only positive is the UK has probably the cheapest cars in Europe, but that still doesn't mean they're cheap. I moved to Ireland from UK and the taxes, road tax, insurance and specs for cars, vrt etc is a joke altogether. Cars are like at least 60% more expensive in Ireland.
I remember buying a 10 year Old Ford Fiesta off eBay with 20,000 miles for £1100 a few years ago…. Now a 10 year old Fiesta is like 6 or 7 GRAND!!! It’s mental 😂
Sold my mk6 fiesta 11 years ago for £5000 and was looking for a runaround for work along side my C43 and mk6s are still near £3000 for a nice one I just couldnt bring myself to pay that for a 2007/2008 fiesta

All because people are duped into PCP ‘s . So you can drive a new car for £ 500 a month and hand it back after 3 years having paid nearly £ 20k for the privilege only to start all over again. Most electric cars are bought by businesses as a tax write off. I’m still driving my 17 year old car which I bought ten years ago for £3k.
What it needs is for everyone to keep the car that they have and not to bother buying from these rip off merchants. That's all it needs and the prices will soon come down.
Glad you did a video on this. The market is just stupid at the moment. I’ve never owned a newer car and even though I am starting to get into a position where I could potentially get something newer, the rates and therefor the monthly payments are just insane. I have been looking into best used pcp deals for things like Golf GTI/clubsport/R, or bmw m135i and similar. I think the Golf would be my choice but with the market the way it is, you have to really be swayed by the residual values, which Golf’s are apparently bad and m135i right now are much better for. You can’t really get what you want, you are having to alter your outlook a lot due to the market. I look around for say a 2015 Golf GTi or Audi S3 and they also quite mad money for their age. I bought a 2003 mk1 S3 in about 2010 for £8600 and at that point it was 7 years old!! Equivalent 7/8 year old car now 2015, probably double that!!
Totally agree with you, I would love to buy another car but I’m holding out as I feel all car prices need to come down, good news is house prices are now falling, so hopefully car prices won’t be far behind them with the increase in interest rates.
Agree, new and used, car and vans! Prime example on vans… in 2013 my dad got a brand new Citroen Berlingo for a smidge over £10,000 vat included, yes it was a good deal then but now without crunching numbers they sit around £20,000 + vat (£24,000) so they have doubled in 10 years.😅
It's the worst possible time to buy a car, or have trouble with a car, you're just getting shafted left right and centre, better hanging on to what you've got until the market sorts itself out.
The thing i notice is most private buyers are now asking retail (or close) money themselves. The private sale cars that are priced sensibly are still selling fairly quickly.
The secondhand market is the worst it's ever been, dealers etc are pushing the prices up and this effects private sales as they look at dealers prices and boost the prices up. The world is just mad and rapidly declining in the retail world, and not just retail 😢
Yep as long as there're people dumb/desperate enough to pay, dealers won't drop prices. However I could tell for enthusiasts' cars the demand has been weak for quite a while, there're a few cars I check weekly and I can tell they're sitting at the forecourt longer than ever, just dealers will not be cutting the prices (if they do, a few hundred quid max). That's said if the prices are to give in (more of a question of when), I'd think enthusiasts' cars will go first (of course not counting EVs - already crashed). On the new cars' front, the cheaper segment is becoming more expensive than ever, manufacturers know 80% of shoppers are locked in the PCP cycle anyway hence sticker prices are increasingly irrelevant. However, I can't see this continuing given the interest rates.

Certainly have noticed how dead the private market is nowadays. Fb groups and owners clubs are the only way now (for something hot hatch related). Everything has gone up so used cars are taken along with that. I think all cars will come down but I think we are highly unlikely to see sub 1k cars anymore due to the government wanting everyone in expensive EVs and I also think young kids now seem to have new cars and look down upon old ones. My first car was a 300 quid mini that me and my dad did up. You're lucky you got your RS when u did. Had my fk2 type r 4 years and I had zero depreciation in that time. Madness.
Couldn’t agree more. I have a MK3 RS, got it the same time as you got yours, and work hard to also fund a daily 17 plate focus estate, again like you also had so the RS is well looked after. For the first time Iv had to let a daily driver run over 100k miles as there is nothing out there I can reasonably afford to replace it. The price of similar cars, older and with only just less miles is just outrageous! My daily cost me 10k 3yrs ago, I reckon I’d be paying 15k + for the same thing in todays market, it’s a joke. I was contemplating swapping the RS for the new mustang that Ford keep bombarding my email inbox with, but they don’t tell you the price, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that is touching 50k when it’s released, given a focus ST can be anywhere near 38k, which will be a hard pass!! I also feel this a stealth way of pushing us towards the electric crap market, which is a day all petrol heads like us should dread!
Yeah used car markets on retail are still way too high. Now if you are going to trade your car in you are starting to see what the real market value of the car is. Looking at the US market at the minute. Wholesale markets fell 3% in 2 weeks yet the retail market in the states is still over inflated. Things surely have to level out at some stage in the UK, higher interest rates, people mortgages etc . Will dealers still hold tight on high prices in the hope that some eejit will still pay the price or will manufacturers pull back on supply to keep prices high. VW announced they are increasing new ca prices by I think 3.6%!! in August
Totally agree, I had 5k to buy a car and thought I’d get a good car as doing about 16000 miles a year but in that price range they didn’t look any better than a car for a couple of grand. Ended up getting a mark 2 focus and actually think it looks better than a mark 3.
Agreed, car prices are simply silly. I have had my current small car since 2011, its very reliable but I am fed up of it want another car but I will not pay fantasy prices. So I am doing as you say and waiting.....12 months.
4 years ago , the company I work for purchased a Ford Galaxy Titanium X (12 plate) with 55k for £5200. It’s likely worth more than that now with 105k on the clock and 4 years older. Don’t get me wrong it’s a lovely car but I’m the old (pre covid days ) this would have been a sun £2k banger by now.

In 2021 I bought my daily driver one owner from new 2017 Focus 182 BHP Titanium X estate. It had 17k miles on it and cost me £11k. Now two years on it has 33k miles on it and is worth about £14k - £15k, so it’s got older, gained miles, gained an extra owner yet it’s gone up on value. I would like to switch up to an ST estate or maybe a Leon Cupra estate, but TBH the prices are just silly. I’m not spending large sums for cars with more miles on than what I have and potentially in worse cosmetic condition than mine (mine is immaculate) just to gain some performance. I’ve got a new Fiesta ST for having fun so it’s just not worth the cost to swap out my Focus. I was lucky with the Fiesta because we pre ordered before the prices went stupid for those too. We got that for £24k which is still not cheap, but it’s a lot cheaper than what they became which was getting dangerously lose to £30k at the end. Rant away mate on your vids, I think most people here probably agree with you.
I’ve just decided after considering moving on from my Fiesta ST that the prices of cars I’d like are crazy and I refuse to pay it so keeping the ST and done my motorbike test, out bike shopping tomorrow time for a new journey
You’re completely right I thought I was the only one saying this I was 18 in 2018 just passed there was hundreds of options for sub £500 decent first cars even around lockdown when I was buying and selling cars after 2021 everything has gone up crazy prices
This is so true, I want something to replace my family wagon sub 10k, but there is nothing out there which I think is good value that tickles my fancy! Saw a 2012 BMW E91 advertised yesterday for 10 grand, well over 100k on the clock and quite clearly has a broken rear spring, not to mention the curbed alloys! I think I'll be sticking with my 250k mile 9-3 for the time being.
The used car market has been awful lately. Every time I see a "good deal" I'll read on and see "suspected head gasket" or "previously a Cat S but repaired to a high standard" etc. Other private cars seem to be priced the same as dealer prices, but without the warranty, test drive and part ex facilities etc. I do hope the bubble will burst. Part of the problem is that our money simply isn't worth what it used to be due to inflation. £10k now won't get you what £10k did a few years back. However it might not all be bad. The Bank of England has rapidly increased interest rates, which has put a lot of strain on homeowners with a mortgage. The cost of living crisis has also given people less spare cash. So hopefully there will be a few more cars on the market soon, as people will be forced to sell their toys(sporty cars and bikes). The other thing is the chip shortage has pushed used car prices up, and that situation is a lot better now. New cars are being produced at a faster rate, so hopefully this will put more used cars onto the market in the near future as people buy new.
I think Sale or Return is the best bet for the Leon if it’s gotta go. I follow high peak autos and he does get a steady stream of cars offered to him. He often only makes £1k per car on the margin.

I have quite a long list of seemingly average cars that I'd like to own but I think fondness for them will grow further with these newer electric cars that try to second guess your every move but then get it wrong, so you spend the rest of your journey trying to override it.

same here. Bought a newish car used approved in March 2022 as required for my job, paid premium vs the average market value. Suddenly I don't it anymore and I am struggling to shift it without loosing thousands. In 2016-2018 the company I worked for sold 7 luxury cars (owner's toys) privately, without hassle (Cosworth RS, Audi S5, Golf R32, Land Rover Disco and more).
I'm with you on the boycott, I've been looking for a Euro 6 van as a daily for a quite a while now, but I just cant bring myself to pay what the dealers are asking for, So much money for a beat up van with 120,000 on the clock!
Still amazes me that folk are willing to through big deposits for cars on PCP but you never actually own it! That big upfront payment was thrown on the fire. Worlds gone mad.

Agree wholeheartedly. For two main reasons 1. Inflation. The money printing catches up with you eventually. Magic money tree is always there to create more currency, hence the value decreases - prices inflate. 2. It’s all about the monthly payment. People don’t really care how much a car costs, they just accept the monthly payment, this gives credit brokers the upper hand. In fact the price is not really that important to them, only the price of their credit. If you knock £1,000 off the sticker price but then offer a higher interest rate over 4 years, you’ve made up that money. If people paid cash for cars, they’d have to save up, they’d have a much stronger sense of the value of money, and prices would fall accordingly. Fiat money rots society. Buy Bitcoin!
I think people are being pushed towards the dealers by the amount of scammers that are out there on the various social media platforms and internet sales sites / auctions, They would rather pay over the odds than lose some or all of their money, plus there's the benefits of finance schemes, warranties and actually dealing with an established business rather than " selling on behalf of my mates grandads friend as they don't do the internet " 🙄
I bought a Honda Jazz recently. It is a 20-year old car and the dealer was asking £3K. Far too much. I wouldn't have minded that price maybe - the bodywork wasn't too bad and the engine was sound, but the car had clearly not had a decent service for a very long time. I did knock him down on price because of all the work which needed doing on it - tyres exhaust brakes fluids etc. But I still wasn't really happy with what I paid. If they are going to ask high prices they should at least sell a car which isn't going to fail an MOT the moment you drive it off the forecourt.
First time viewer. I think this bubble may crash soon. I don’t actually think many cars are selling right now. With interest rates high, it would be expected an increase of car repossessions/returns etc, and thus a supply of cheap cars. Myself, I’m thinking classics right now - I can work on it without a computer, and possibly depreciation proof.

The used car market is ridiculous right now, I bought a 2016 340i BMW for just under 20k, owned for 4years and traded in this year, it needed mot 3 tyres a major service aswell as wheel refurb, that said in that condition I got £17.5k part ex! Lost hardly anything and needed a good 1.5k spending on it, now enjoying a focus st mk4 which was also overpriced but whatever 😂

Today, I went to see a £2000 Citroen Berligo XTR. I know this car. My son said that I sounded excited. I was thinking of practical things like cash, insurance, tax, etc. When I got there the csr was not "show room standard". It had been bought cheaply in an auction. 120,000 miles, from a rusty part of the world, rust everywhere. And the price, £3,450 I suspect they will "do it up", if anyone is interested. But right now, they would be happy to get rid of it. Poor value at £2,000. Walk away!
The market is just nuts, been looking for a second car for about 6-8k and anything of interest is at least 12-14k. Just going to run my daily till she dies and hope these prices drop..
The problem now is people are not cash rich hence the dealers getting all the play with finance. Dealers margins on PX's have always been high. Have you considered buying crash damaged and getting the frame outsourced but fitting the panels and spraying yourself.
Brought a cat S Astra 1.4 2012 plate for use at weekends about 3 years ago as van i use for work is only insured for company use. Fancy getting something different now with a bit more punch like a Vauxhall Mokka 1.6 turbo but prices for even a 2014 plate with relatively low mileage look well inflated.
I've noticed the same thing lately and find it extremely frustrating. Back in 2019 I bought a mint 17 plate Focus ST3 which at the time had done 4200 miles. For personal reasons I had to get rid of it after 3 months and have been getting about in a runabout ever since. Recently I've really been craving having another one. Only trouble is they're still around the same money, perhaps £500 less than I paid back then, albeit for an 18 plate one. A month or so ago I test drove one and absolutely loved it but something didn't sit well with me. After the test drive the salesman left me to it to have a think. I just stood there staring at it for a good half hour and ended up walking away because I couldn't bring myself to pay that much. By the time I test drove it they'd had it advertised for some time which initially set alarm bells ringing with me, but in the end I decided to go and have a look at it. Its still advertised now at the same money but something has caught my attention... none of them are shifting at the moment. I'm not sure if its because people are spending their money on holidays at the moment, or whether buyers are starting to take a stand against the prices now. If they'd drop the price by a grand I'd probably go back and have it.
totally agree mate, also i remember 10 years back engine swapped cars were common and very cheap but one question wanna ask everyone in the comments, does anyone recommend buying import cars, either from japan or from here, is the insurance cheaper, i found two import companies with youtube channels but no British people have made videos reviewing them, also i checked toyota japan and vietnam, brand new car is 12 grand, really tempting, but this is all my savings, so i don't wanna get scammed, btw i found a lot of people in south africa have made videos about importing from japan, any advice is highly appreciated everyone thanks

I bought my first car6 moumths a an automatic as I have dysoraxia ( morderate-servre motorskills problem could do gears without looking down a few seconds and autism , took me a year and half to find sonething in budget and inexpensive on insurance ,I first saw 2001 yaris auto CVT 120,000 miles , radio casette wind down winds , no alloys basic spec 1.0 litre emgine the dealer was asking £2500 , then i found my car T3 2004 Corolla 3 door 1.6 vvti , alloys , front font lights , adjustable stering colum , ac , cd player , lot more space only 79000 miles the exact same price , you get doubly screwed if you can only ohysically drive an auto and do not qualify for the mobility scheme despite getting pip enhanced mobility rate😂
Totally agree. my focus ST3 is due to be paid off in may24 (on a loan not finance) and we buy and others offering me c9-10.5k. similar ones for sale are up for £13K or more. I would love to upgrade to an RS next year but dont think its a realistic option at the moment.
Totally agree it’s my going in pain for over a year now. I’m really desperate to upgrade my fiesta to something a bit fancier like a c class or a 3 series but I can not justify the prices can’t help but feeling ripped off which is putting me off buying atm. Yet seems like prices might be going up in the first quarter of 2024 so got at least another year of waiting before actually conceding the upgrade or afford it to be precise lol

The thing i don't understand is cars are more expensive on the forecourts but the trade in prices are low. I bought an S3 2015 43k miles for 21k 16 months ago. The car has 54k miles fsh and WeBuyAnyCar offering 14k. Ford dealership offering the same. 7k loss in 16 months. Im not selling it just testing the market .
The exact issue I have with my Cupra. I think it’s because people are reluctant to sell privately and dealers are taking advantage of this. Also, the cost of living has probably made dealer overheads more costly so they need a bigger margin to make the same profit.

And I cant believe when you said that mondeo estate was 10k, I looked at titanium x sports on autotrader instantly and they are all fortunes! Something really isn’t making sense, even a 15 plate Audi S3 DSG was cheaper to buy when 3 years old in 2018, than it would be to buy now at 8 years old. Very strange times at the moment in the car market, nothing seems like a good deal any more
The markets crazy, I bought a 2018 plate ST3 petrol last July with 24,000 miles on it, paid £17,500 for it & I've put 15k on & I'm being offered £18k for it, mad. On a different note I'd recommend one, it's such a well sorted car without the RS madness & I'm told in some of the mid range drags it's quicker than the RS, probably due to the extra weight of the 4wd system.
I’ve been looking at Mk3 ST estates - but the diesels for economy on the work commute. But I’ve come to the conclusion that due to inflated prices I’ll just keep the Cupra for at least another year, especially whilst it still has warranty remaining.
i understand what you mean about new car prices. i was going to trade in my 2017 leon fr to the local dealership. they offered my £9500. even we buy any car will give me £10k. dealers are a rip off; even more so now it seems.

I bought a ford mondeo 2.2 titanium x sport 2010 with 18000 miles on it for £8500, when it was 18 months old, a £17+ grand car, because it was cat c,. ive still got it now with only 40000 miles on it, its been a fantastic car and ive spent very little on it,. couple of sets of tyres,2 batteries, couple of services, back bushes, cam belt,water pump etc @ 10 years old,.I,m a ford man, ford thames 1500e/mk 3 cortina 2.3 ghia/granada 2.0/sierra saphire 2wd cosworth/st 200/now the mondy,.I also just bought a ford focus mk3 2.0S 2013 in thailand, 80000kms, mint condition for £7000,. no salt on thai roads,so = no rust,.Thai used cars were well overpriced years ago but now match uk prices give or take,. Looking at uk s/h car prices now sickens me, i nearly bought a 2015 1.5 focus mk3.5 last year for £13000, but it was an RS replica, and a good one, all proper RS body kit, exhaust,wheels etc, interior was ST3 spec, but it sold quick, and at the end of the day it was a 1.5 eco boost, not the best engine, so i looked at mk 3.5 STs "petrol" all 2017s £18k+,. couple of cat Cs for £10+,. Please I need clarification. I saw a car in Facebook marketplace. Sent a chat to the seller which I got a reply. I was referred to a Gmail address to send an email. So they sent the details of the car. However, they said they don’t allow inspections of their cars that it has been checked by professionals. I should pay for delivery of the car and I can return the car within 5 days at their own cost if I don’t like the car. They stated the delivery company for the car which is genuine after I check on Company House. Can this process be a scam considering they don’t allow inspection of the car?

Its crazy, just sold my Sons first car, a very average MK6 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec, bought it 3 years ago for £400. Just sold it for £1250 and the phone went crazy with people offering more!! Makes no sense at all.

If it's any consolation my Cupra 290 20reg has lost about £3k over 1 year also. TBH I don't think that's too bad for a performance car, although they will stick it up for sale at £23k and they were only £29k new! It's the cost of living crisis and interest payments that are killing it. Used cars are too expensive, leasing is a cheaper option if you do low miles.
I think the market is bloody preposterous. I toyed with the idea of selling my mint e92 Beamer for something with five doors and some beans 🫘 (golf gti or focus st) but the trade ins Vs asking prices prohibit a reasonable deal. I personally wouldn’t be happy financing at any rate over 5-6%. I’ve had a couple of cars on 0% deals before so have been spoilt. Would rather pay cash in this market.
It's because finance is too easy to get, why would dealers lower the price now people are willing to pay interest on finance, the dealership ends up with the car back on trade ins
A year ago we wanted to upgrade. Everything was such poor value I ended buying a brand new hot hatch because it had 5 year warranty and was 25k. And I got 2k px for a very tatty but good vw Passat tdi sport wagon. Every panel needed paint. Pre Covid that was a £800 car at best.
Don't be afraid to sell the Cupra private. There's always people out there that have cash and want to save a couple of grand buying private. The fact there's only one for sale private works to your advantage...Then for your next car put a wanted post on the owners groups. Theres always folk that will let their cars go for just above trade price. The above is what I try to do to minimize losing lots of money on cars. Worse thing people do is sell to trade and buy at retail money.
I'm just an ordinary man with a ten year old diesel Peugeot Partner Teepee (that means a van based car) with 100,000 miles on it which I've owned and had serviced from new ! Nothing at all is wrong with it but I decided to look at buying a brand new Citroen Berlingo Multispace, my car's equivalent, and A) couldn't believe the price and B) couldn't believe that they now HAVE to have a metal cargo bulkhead fitted behind the rear seats which then means it's classed as a light goods vehicle and has its speed restricted to 50 on single carriageway roads and 60 on dual carriageways and motorways....so I walked out and decided to keep my old one....which has NO modern nightmarish sat nav screen or even airconditioning and I'm not scared of getting it scratched in a car park and I don't have a mileage restriction of 6,000 miles per year ! I suggest you abandon your search for the sort of cars you mention and start buying and restoring those wonderful cars like the Rover P5 that make me so envious when I see one !

I think you’re right in what you say. The prices of cars has gone mad, you can get lucky on Facebook sales for bargains sometimes. Or your other option is auctions. Buying something cheap and spending a bit of time bringing it back to its best and selling on would be something I’d like to follow and the process behind it. There’s a big market for cheaper used cars at the moment as cost of living is hitting people hard. Small cars that are cheap to run are the way forward it seems and demand is high.
I think your idea of taking a basic looking small engine car and changing some parts to make it look like a sportier version is a good idea. It’s something I used to do in the late 90’s early 2000’s. As a younger driver back then insurance was a big factor and I wanted a nice looking car but wasn’t to fussed about the engine size at that point in life. These days young drivers are crippled by insurance premiums and have no chance of having a sportier version of car. I think there would be a good market for cars like this in today’s car world. As young drivers reach there early 20’s and with a few years no claims and insurance dropping to a more affordable price than when they first started driving their focus might change to something a bit sportier but don’t want their insurance to rocket again so a good alternative would be to keep the idea of a smaller engine but to buy something that looks the part, although their insurance would rise slightly again as they would declare some modifications it would be nothing in comparison to having the higher powered variant. Like I said I done this back in the day and all my cars looked incredible and were always the best looking cars I’m my town even though they had the smaller engines. Having said that now I’m the total opposite and I’m more focused on speed but I suppose In the car world that’s the way most of us transition. Anyway good video and I’ve subscribed to keep an eye on what you do next.
It’s crazy, I was trying to get a 2017 s3, wasn’t able to get get up to Scotland and money together soon enough, was asking 27k for it, a few days later the guy passed it to a dealer who was selling it for 30k
We've had cheap money (well below normal interest rates and money printing by the BoE) for over a decade. We've had supply restriction due to EU emissions legislation and lockdown measures. Now manufacturers get fined if the fleet they sell produces too many grams per km. They can't afford to sell many hot hatches so most have stopped making them or increased the price and decreased supply. See Honda, lol. In the next year or 2 they need to sell 22% electric to comply with the rules. It's going to get harder and harder to buy petrol and diesel cars well before the 2030 cut off as this figure will ratchet up each year. I think in the long term second hand prices on decent hot hatches will stay firm, although there will be probably be a correction due to economic conditions soon. Look after your performance cars, they're going to have to last!

I used to buy car magazines weekly and monthly for over 25 years. I gave up 5 years ago because every story is about a boring EV. I couldn’t give a f@@k about it. It's true. The jump in prices used to be gradual, now it's steep. From what I've seen around, the costs have gone up dramatically (components, electricity . labour etc) , raw materials . Also, some brands pack too much technology in their cars. Another story I've heard is that car companies produce less cars but charge more for them (higher profit/high demand).
and the new led headlights are terrible on some cars the drl are too bright ( never mind the dip beams) and too sporadic , especially when some cunt is tailgating you

Your absolutly bang on mate, I've been searching for ages to find a decent priced family car and eventually went for a 2019 A4 avant. While looking I noticed new nissan quashqai's were touching 40k. Absolutly mental for an everyday family motor. PCP deals making it easier to get into them but never owning it is partly to blame for high costs if you ask me

You’re not wrong - it’s crazy at the minute, currently got a lightly modified mk8 fiesta st with just under 24k miles and I keep fancying a swap to an Audi s3 sport back, but the prices for them are ridiculous &/or the ones in my price bracket have all done mega miles, same with the golf r’s too! Went to look at a potential car recently (went to look at what looked like a very nicely specced 420d Beemer) that looked great in the pictures and the salesman told me how “they only buy the best examples “, got there and every panel had marks/scratches on , all 4 wheels wanted refurbishing & as soon as I pointed this out things went sour and the money they offered me for my car suddenly wasn’t attainable anymore- the deal fell apart🤷♂️

I agree, 5 or 10 years ago I could buy an old Volvo for £500, the same Volvo post covid is now five times as much and also well over the insurance write off value. Everyone is in survival mode including car dealerships.
My opinion is that since the days of WBAC, people are selling their cars to dealers so less lower priced private sales. And the shortage in micro chips so car makers are only selling mid to higher spec'd new cars, no basic models, therefore pushing the price of 2nd hand cars up, especially low spec models as time goes on they'll be less common.
On the plus side i bought a Scirocco R fully optioned 2 years old for £22.7k 7 years ago and sold it this week for £18000😂
We've had a very similar experience whilst looking for an S-Max Titanium Sport X. Every one we looked at within what we thought was a reasonable budget were complete dogs. Eventually ended up forking out £11,000 for a 62 plate with 84K. The used car market is utter madness.

you can always walk away there are plenty of dealers out there with good prices if they want to stay in business, before parting with your cash get an independant check and valuation such as carcheck or vcheck
100% correct mate. I was looking at 2015 Golf R's in 2019 and ithey were c.£16k. Now the same 2015 Golf R is £19k and 4 years older !! Plus insurance quotes... mine are now over £1000 for one instead of £600. Crazy times. 😮
Recently bought a 2 year old kuga for the family, there was a focus ST in the showroom, it was £40,000!!! 40k for a ford focus, its absolutlely bonkers! Im meant to be treating myself to an RS next year, might just spend the money on the garden instead 😂

I agree it's a bit of a stalemate situation. The best advice I'd say is to hold onto whatever car you have right now. The market is crazy expensive.
The only positive is the UK has probably the cheapest cars in Europe, but that still doesn't mean they're cheap. I moved to Ireland from UK and the taxes, road tax, insurance and specs for cars, vrt etc is a joke altogether. Cars are like at least 60% more expensive in Ireland.
I remember buying a 10 year Old Ford Fiesta off eBay with 20,000 miles for £1100 a few years ago…. Now a 10 year old Fiesta is like 6 or 7 GRAND!!! It’s mental 😂

All because people are duped into PCP ‘s . So you can drive a new car for £ 500 a month and hand it back after 3 years having paid nearly £ 20k for the privilege only to start all over again. Most electric cars are bought by businesses as a tax write off. I’m still driving my 17 year old car which I bought ten years ago for £3k.
What it needs is for everyone to keep the car that they have and not to bother buying from these rip off merchants. That's all it needs and the prices will soon come down.
Glad you did a video on this. The market is just stupid at the moment. I’ve never owned a newer car and even though I am starting to get into a position where I could potentially get something newer, the rates and therefor the monthly payments are just insane. I have been looking into best used pcp deals for things like Golf GTI/clubsport/R, or bmw m135i and similar. I think the Golf would be my choice but with the market the way it is, you have to really be swayed by the residual values, which Golf’s are apparently bad and m135i right now are much better for. You can’t really get what you want, you are having to alter your outlook a lot due to the market. I look around for say a 2015 Golf GTi or Audi S3 and they also quite mad money for their age. I bought a 2003 mk1 S3 in about 2010 for £8600 and at that point it was 7 years old!! Equivalent 7/8 year old car now 2015, probably double that!!

Agree, new and used, car and vans! Prime example on vans… in 2013 my dad got a brand new Citroen Berlingo for a smidge over £10,000 vat included, yes it was a good deal then but now without crunching numbers they sit around £20,000 + vat (£24,000) so they have doubled in 10 years.😅

The thing i notice is most private buyers are now asking retail (or close) money themselves.
The private sale cars that are priced sensibly are still selling fairly quickly.
The secondhand market is the worst it's ever been, dealers etc are pushing the prices up and this effects private sales as they look at dealers prices and boost the prices up. The world is just mad and rapidly declining in the retail world, and not just retail 😢

Yep as long as there're people dumb/desperate enough to pay, dealers won't drop prices. However I could tell for enthusiasts' cars the demand has been weak for quite a while, there're a few cars I check weekly and I can tell they're sitting at the forecourt longer than ever, just dealers will not be cutting the prices (if they do, a few hundred quid max). That's said if the prices are to give in (more of a question of when), I'd think enthusiasts' cars will go first (of course not counting EVs - already crashed).
On the new cars' front, the cheaper segment is becoming more expensive than ever, manufacturers know 80% of shoppers are locked in the PCP cycle anyway hence sticker prices are increasingly irrelevant. However, I can't see this continuing given the interest rates.

Certainly have noticed how dead the private market is nowadays. Fb groups and owners clubs are the only way now (for something hot hatch related). Everything has gone up so used cars are taken along with that. I think all cars will come down but I think we are highly unlikely to see sub 1k cars anymore due to the government wanting everyone in expensive EVs and I also think young kids now seem to have new cars and look down upon old ones. My first car was a 300 quid mini that me and my dad did up. You're lucky you got your RS when u did. Had my fk2 type r 4 years and I had zero depreciation in that time. Madness.

Couldn’t agree more. I have a MK3 RS, got it the same time as you got yours, and work hard to also fund a daily 17 plate focus estate, again like you also had so the RS is well looked after. For the first time Iv had to let a daily driver run over 100k miles as there is nothing out there I can reasonably afford to replace it. The price of similar cars, older and with only just less miles is just outrageous! My daily cost me 10k 3yrs ago, I reckon I’d be paying 15k + for the same thing in todays market, it’s a joke. I was contemplating swapping the RS for the new mustang that Ford keep bombarding my email inbox with, but they don’t tell you the price, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that is touching 50k when it’s released, given a focus ST can be anywhere near 38k, which will be a hard pass!!

Yeah used car markets on retail are still way too high. Now if you are going to trade your car in you are starting to see what the real market value of the car is. Looking at the US market at the minute. Wholesale markets fell 3% in 2 weeks yet the retail market in the states is still over inflated.
Things surely have to level out at some stage in the UK, higher interest rates, people mortgages etc . Will dealers still hold tight on high prices in the hope that some eejit will still pay the price or will manufacturers pull back on supply to keep prices high. VW announced they are increasing new ca prices by I think 3.6%!! in August

Totally agree, I had 5k to buy a car and thought I’d get a good car as doing about 16000 miles a year but in that price range they didn’t look any better than a car for a couple of grand.

4 years ago , the company I work for purchased a Ford Galaxy Titanium X (12 plate) with 55k for £5200. It’s likely worth more than that now with 105k on the clock and 4 years older. Don’t get me wrong it’s a lovely car but I’m the old (pre covid days ) this would have been a sun £2k banger by now.

Completely agree. I'm looking for a car now after owning a toyota for 10 years. The price has doubled in that time! I'm holding off buying another one yet but I can't see the prices falling.
In 2021 I bought my daily driver one owner from new 2017 Focus 182 BHP Titanium X estate.
It had 17k miles on it and cost me £11k.
Now two years on it has 33k miles on it and is worth about £14k - £15k, so it’s got older, gained miles, gained an extra owner yet it’s gone up on value.
I would like to switch up to an ST estate or maybe a Leon Cupra estate, but TBH the prices are just silly. I’m not spending large sums for cars with more miles on than what I have and potentially in worse cosmetic condition than mine (mine is immaculate) just to gain some performance. I’ve got a new Fiesta ST for having fun so it’s just not worth the cost to swap out my Focus.
I was lucky with the Fiesta because we pre ordered before the prices went stupid for those too. We got that for £24k which is still not cheap, but it’s a lot cheaper than what they became which was getting dangerously lose to £30k at the end.

This is so true, I want something to replace my family wagon sub 10k, but there is nothing out there which I think is good value that tickles my fancy! Saw a 2012 BMW E91 advertised yesterday for 10 grand, well over 100k on the clock and quite clearly has a broken rear spring, not to mention the curbed alloys! I think I'll be sticking with my 250k mile 9-3 for the time being.
The used car market has been awful lately. Every time I see a "good deal" I'll read on and see "suspected head gasket" or "previously a Cat S but repaired to a high standard" etc.
Other private cars seem to be priced the same as dealer prices, but without the warranty, test drive and part ex facilities etc.
I do hope the bubble will burst. Part of the problem is that our money simply isn't worth what it used to be due to inflation. £10k now won't get you what £10k did a few years back.
However it might not all be bad. The Bank of England has rapidly increased interest rates, which has put a lot of strain on homeowners with a mortgage. The cost of living crisis has also given people less spare cash. So hopefully there will be a few more cars on the market soon, as people will be forced to sell their toys(sporty cars and bikes).
The other thing is the chip shortage has pushed used car prices up, and that situation is a lot better now. New cars are being produced at a faster rate, so hopefully this will put more used cars onto the market in the near future as people buy new.
Let’s hope it settles down soon, although I don’t think it’ll ever be what it once was 😢
I think Sale or Return is the best bet for the Leon if it’s gotta go. I follow high peak autos and he does get a steady stream of cars offered to him. He often only makes £1k per car on the margin.
Issue is I can’t afford to have it sat on a forecourt until it sells as I need it for daily duties…

I have quite a long list of seemingly average cars that I'd like to own but I think fondness for them will grow further with these newer electric cars that try to second guess your every move but then get it wrong, so you spend the rest of your journey trying to override it.

same here. Bought a newish car used approved in March 2022 as required for my job, paid premium vs the average market value. Suddenly I don't it anymore and I am struggling to shift it without loosing thousands. In 2016-2018 the company I worked for sold 7 luxury cars (owner's toys) privately, without hassle (Cosworth RS, Audi S5, Golf R32, Land Rover Disco and more).

Agree wholeheartedly. For two main reasons
1. Inflation. The money printing catches up with you eventually. Magic money tree is always there to create more currency, hence the value decreases - prices inflate.
2. It’s all about the monthly payment. People don’t really care how much a car costs, they just accept the monthly payment, this gives credit brokers the upper hand. In fact the price is not really that important to them, only the price of their credit. If you knock £1,000 off the sticker price but then offer a higher interest rate over 4 years, you’ve made up that money.
If people paid cash for cars, they’d have to save up, they’d have a much stronger sense of the value of money, and prices would fall accordingly.

They would rather pay over the odds than lose some or all of their money, plus there's the benefits of finance schemes, warranties and actually dealing with an established business rather than " selling on behalf of my mates grandads friend as they don't do the internet " 🙄

I bought a Honda Jazz recently. It is a 20-year old car and the dealer was asking £3K. Far too much.
I wouldn't have minded that price maybe - the bodywork wasn't too bad and the engine was sound, but the car had clearly not had a decent service for a very long time. I did knock him down on price because of all the work which needed doing on it - tyres exhaust brakes fluids etc. But I still wasn't really happy with what I paid. If they are going to ask high prices they should at least sell a car which isn't going to fail an MOT the moment you drive it off the forecourt.

First time viewer. I think this bubble may crash soon. I don’t actually think many cars are selling right now. With interest rates high, it would be expected an increase of car repossessions/returns etc, and thus a supply of cheap cars. Myself, I’m thinking classics right now - I can work on it without a computer, and possibly depreciation proof.
Yea I agree it has to come to a point where prices start to fall. I think older cars are becoming more desirable especially to enthusiasts so the price of those is silly too 😢
The used car market is ridiculous right now, I bought a 2016 340i BMW for just under 20k, owned for 4years and traded in this year, it needed mot 3 tyres a major service aswell as wheel refurb, that said in that condition I got £17.5k part ex! Lost hardly anything and needed a good 1.5k spending on it, now enjoying a focus st mk4 which was also overpriced but whatever 😂

@@CarFocused u really wanted an audi s4 at the time but they were £30k and thought the 340i was a bit of a bargain, the dealer I traded in against put it up for 21.5k but it actually sold for £19.7k almost the exact same price I bought it for 4years prior 🤣

New cars cost the earth.Went a mini dealer refused to give us any discount came home thought about it's a flipping mini nothing tasty the dealer can go do one.Nobody buying new cars unless they have to not many second hand vehicles coming to the market and what out there is expensive noticed private dealers still trying to buy cars for less than trade quoting webuy any car prices which are under auction prices at the moment.We have to buy a new car because we haven't got are car was recantly written of .The market horrible right now and as you say cars are rubbish at the moment noticed dealers are selling vans instead of cars at the moment.
Today, I went to see a £2000 Citroen Berligo XTR. I know this car. My son said that I sounded excited. I was thinking of practical things like cash, insurance, tax, etc.
When I got there the csr was not "show room standard". It had been bought cheaply in an auction. 120,000 miles, from a rusty part of the world, rust everywhere.
And the price, £3,450
I suspect they will "do it up", if anyone is interested.
But right now, they would be happy to get rid of it.

The problem now is people are not cash rich hence the dealers getting all the play with finance. Dealers margins on PX's have always been high.
Have you considered buying crash damaged and getting the frame outsourced but fitting the panels and spraying yourself.
Brought a cat S Astra 1.4 2012 plate for use at weekends about 3 years ago as van i use for work is only insured for company use. Fancy getting something different now with a bit more punch like a Vauxhall Mokka 1.6 turbo but prices for even a 2014 plate with relatively low mileage look well inflated.

I've noticed the same thing lately and find it extremely frustrating. Back in 2019 I bought a mint 17 plate Focus ST3 which at the time had done 4200 miles. For personal reasons I had to get rid of it after 3 months and have been getting about in a runabout ever since. Recently I've really been craving having another one. Only trouble is they're still around the same money, perhaps £500 less than I paid back then, albeit for an 18 plate one. A month or so ago I test drove one and absolutely loved it but something didn't sit well with me. After the test drive the salesman left me to it to have a think. I just stood there staring at it for a good half hour and ended up walking away because I couldn't bring myself to pay that much. By the time I test drove it they'd had it advertised for some time which initially set alarm bells ringing with me, but in the end I decided to go and have a look at it. Its still advertised now at the same money but something has caught my attention... none of them are shifting at the moment. I'm not sure if its because people are spending their money on holidays at the moment, or whether buyers are starting to take a stand against the prices now. If they'd drop the price by a grand I'd probably go back and have it.
totally agree mate, also i remember 10 years back engine swapped cars were common and very cheap but one question wanna ask everyone in the comments, does anyone recommend buying import cars, either from japan or from here, is the insurance cheaper, i found two import companies with youtube channels but no British people have made videos reviewing them, also i checked toyota japan and vietnam, brand new car is 12 grand, really tempting, but this is all my savings, so i don't wanna get scammed, btw i found a lot of people in south africa have made videos about importing from japan,

I bought my first car6 moumths a an automatic as I have dysoraxia ( morderate-servre motorskills problem could do gears without looking down a few seconds and autism , took me a year and half to find sonething in budget and inexpensive on insurance ,I first saw 2001 yaris auto CVT 120,000 miles , radio casette wind down winds , no alloys basic spec 1.0 litre emgine the dealer was asking £2500 , then i found my car T3 2004 Corolla 3 door 1.6 vvti , alloys , front font lights , adjustable stering colum , ac , cd player , lot more space only 79000 miles the exact same price , you get doubly screwed if you can only ohysically drive an auto and do not qualify for the mobility scheme despite getting pip enhanced mobility rate😂
Q1-2024 a great recession will start, so i expect a lot of cars to flood the market

Totally agree. my focus ST3 is due to be paid off in may24 (on a loan not finance) and we buy and others offering me c9-10.5k. similar ones for sale are up for £13K or more. I would love to upgrade to an RS next year but dont think its a realistic option at the moment.

Totally agree it’s my going in pain for over a year now. I’m really desperate to upgrade my fiesta to something a bit fancier like a c class or a 3 series but I can not justify the prices can’t help but feeling ripped off which is putting me off buying atm. Yet seems like prices might be going up in the first quarter of 2024 so got at least another year of waiting before actually conceding the upgrade or afford it to be precise lol

The thing i don't understand is cars are more expensive on the forecourts but the trade in prices are low. I bought an S3 2015 43k miles for 21k 16 months ago. The car has 54k miles fsh and WeBuyAnyCar offering 14k. Ford dealership offering the same. 7k loss in 16 months. Im not selling it just testing the market .
The exact issue I have with my Cupra. I think it’s because people are reluctant to sell privately and dealers are taking advantage of this. Also, the cost of living has probably made dealer overheads more costly so they need a bigger margin to make the same profit.
I’ve just gotten in an accident and need a car for work. I have no idea what to do, I wish my car was written off but now I’m stuck with all these ridiculous prices!

And I cant believe when you said that mondeo estate was 10k, I looked at titanium x sports on autotrader instantly and they are all fortunes! Something really isn’t making sense, even a 15 plate Audi S3 DSG was cheaper to buy when 3 years old in 2018, than it would be to buy now at 8 years old. Very strange times at the moment in the car market, nothing seems like a good deal any more
The markets crazy, I bought a 2018 plate ST3 petrol last July with 24,000 miles on it, paid £17,500 for it & I've put 15k on & I'm being offered £18k for it, mad. On a different note I'd recommend one, it's such a well sorted car without the RS madness & I'm told in some of the mid range drags it's quicker than the RS, probably due to the extra weight of the 4wd system.
I’ve been looking at Mk3 ST estates - but the diesels for economy on the work commute. But I’ve come to the conclusion that due to inflated prices I’ll just keep the Cupra for at least another year, especially whilst it still has warranty remaining.
i understand what you mean about new car prices. i was going to trade in my 2017 leon fr to the local dealership. they offered my £9500. even we buy any car will give me £10k. dealers are a rip off; even more so now it seems.

I bought a ford mondeo 2.2 titanium x sport 2010 with 18000 miles on it for £8500, when it was 18 months old, a £17+ grand car, because it was cat c,. ive still got it now with only 40000 miles on it, its been a fantastic car and ive spent very little on it,. couple of sets of tyres,2 batteries, couple of services, back bushes, cam belt,water pump etc @ 10 years old,.I,m a ford man, ford thames 1500e/mk 3 cortina 2.3 ghia/granada 2.0/sierra saphire 2wd cosworth/st 200/now the mondy,.I also just bought a ford focus mk3 2.0S 2013 in thailand, 80000kms, mint condition for £7000,. no salt on thai roads,so = no rust,.Thai used cars were well overpriced years ago but now match uk prices give or take,. Looking at uk s/h car prices now sickens me, i nearly bought a 2015 1.5 focus mk3.5 last year for £13000, but it was an RS replica, and a good one, all proper RS body kit, exhaust,wheels etc, interior was ST3 spec, but it sold quick, and at the end of the day it was a 1.5 eco boost, not the best engine, so i looked at mk 3.5 STs "petrol" all 2017s £18k+,. couple of cat Cs for £10+,. My cosworth was a 90G £7000 when it was about 3/4 years old, i found out later it had a new body shell, but again it was a brilliant car,.So cat whatever is a cheap option for s/h motors so long as its been repaired correctly,.i still hanker after an RS focus mk 3.5 tho,..dream on,.!.......
Please I need clarification. I saw a car in Facebook marketplace. Sent a chat to the seller which I got a reply. I was referred to a Gmail address to send an email. So they sent the details of the car. However, they said they don’t allow inspections of their cars that it has been checked by professionals. I should pay for delivery of the car and I can return the car within 5 days at their own cost if I don’t like the car. They stated the delivery company for the car which is genuine after I check on Company House. Can this process be a scam considering they don’t allow inspection of the car?

Its crazy, just sold my Sons first car, a very average MK6 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec, bought it 3 years ago for £400. Just sold it for £1250 and the phone went crazy with people offering more!! Makes no sense at all.

If it's any consolation my Cupra 290 20reg has lost about £3k over 1 year also.
TBH I don't think that's too bad for a performance car, although they will stick it up for sale at £23k and they were only £29k new!
It's the cost of living crisis and interest payments that are killing it.
Used cars are too expensive, leasing is a cheaper option if you do low miles.
I think the market is bloody preposterous. I toyed with the idea of selling my mint e92 Beamer for something with five doors and some beans 🫘 (golf gti or focus st) but the trade ins Vs asking prices prohibit a reasonable deal.
I personally wouldn’t be happy financing at any rate over 5-6%. I’ve had a couple of cars on 0% deals before so have been spoilt. Would rather pay cash in this market.
Luckily we secured a 0% deal on our family car early last year before they went mad!
It's because finance is too easy to get, why would dealers lower the price now people are willing to pay interest on finance, the dealership ends up with the car back on trade ins
A year ago we wanted to upgrade. Everything was such poor value I ended buying a brand new hot hatch because it had 5 year warranty and was 25k. And I got 2k px for a very tatty but good vw Passat tdi sport wagon. Every panel needed paint. Pre Covid that was a £800 car at best.
A lot of people probably went this route. But it’s nuts how the likes of a Fiesta ST are 25k 😂
Don't be afraid to sell the Cupra private. There's always people out there that have cash and want to save a couple of grand buying private. The fact there's only one for sale private works to your advantage...Then for your next car put a wanted post on the owners groups. Theres always folk that will let their cars go for just above trade price.
The above is what I try to do to minimize losing lots of money on cars.
Worse thing people do is sell to trade and buy at retail money.

I'm just an ordinary man with a ten year old diesel Peugeot Partner Teepee (that means a van based car) with 100,000 miles on it which I've owned and had serviced from new ! Nothing at all is wrong with it but I decided to look at buying a brand new Citroen Berlingo Multispace, my car's equivalent, and A) couldn't believe the price and B) couldn't believe that they now HAVE to have a metal cargo bulkhead fitted behind the rear seats which then means it's classed as a light goods vehicle and has its speed restricted to 50 on single carriageway roads and 60 on dual carriageways and motorways....so I walked out and decided to keep my old one....which has NO modern nightmarish sat nav screen or even airconditioning and I'm not scared of getting it scratched in a car park and I don't have a mileage restriction of 6,000 miles per year ! I suggest you abandon your search for the sort of cars you mention and start buying and restoring those wonderful cars like the Rover P5 that make me so envious when I see one !

I bought my daily in 2011 and was given a Mk6 Fiesta last year, which is my town daily.

They have since valued it as high as £925 !
Not that my mum lost out really as she borrows it quite often when her Kuga is in for maintenance/repair.

The prices of cars has gone mad, you can get lucky on Facebook sales for bargains sometimes. Or your other option is auctions.
Buying something cheap and spending a bit of time bringing it back to its best and selling on would be something I’d like to follow and the process behind it.
There’s a big market for cheaper used cars at the moment as cost of living is hitting people hard. Small cars that are cheap to run are the way forward it seems and demand is high.
If I ever find a bargain run about locally I might snap it up….

I think your idea of taking a basic looking small engine car and changing some parts to make it look like a sportier version is a good idea. It’s something I used to do in the late 90’s early 2000’s.
As a younger driver back then insurance was a big factor and I wanted a nice looking car but wasn’t to fussed about the engine size at that point in life.
These days young drivers are crippled by insurance premiums and have no chance of having a sportier version of car. I think there would be a good market for cars like this in today’s car world. As young drivers reach there early 20’s and with a few years no claims and insurance dropping to a more affordable price than when they first started driving their focus might change to something a bit sportier but don’t want their insurance to rocket again so a good alternative would be to keep the idea of a smaller engine but to buy something that looks the part, although their insurance would rise slightly again as they would declare some modifications it would be nothing in comparison to having the higher powered variant.
Like I said I done this back in the day and all my cars looked incredible and were always the best looking cars I’m my town even though they had the smaller engines. Having said that now I’m the total opposite and I’m more focused on speed but I suppose In the car world that’s the way most of us transition.

We've had cheap money (well below normal interest rates and money printing by the BoE) for over a decade. We've had supply restriction due to EU emissions legislation and lockdown measures. Now manufacturers get fined if the fleet they sell produces too many grams per km. They can't afford to sell many hot hatches so most have stopped making them or increased the price and decreased supply. See Honda, lol.
In the next year or 2 they need to sell 22% electric to comply with the rules. It's going to get harder and harder to buy petrol and diesel cars
well before the 2030 cut off as this figure will ratchet up each year.
I think in the long term second hand prices on decent hot hatches will stay firm, although there will be probably be a correction due to economic conditions soon.
Look after your performance cars, they're going to have to last!
