    I've spent a bloody fortune buying and selling pedals looking for the sound I hear in my head.
    After all that, all I actually needed was a good overdrive and a carbon copy. Wish I'd known

      So which overdrive you have?

      Hey man same here! And the funny thing was I really knew it all along but I was going for what was popular and bought all of the Strymon’s ( I did keep the Mobius because you can’t deny how gorgeous every sound is and it covers all your modulation needs and then some ) but other than the Mobius I sold almost every pedal I owned. I bought a Carbon Copy, a Duellist, King Tone Germanium Fuzz and a Dunlop Q Zone because I’m a huge cocked or
      “ parked “ Wah fan even more so than regular back and forth wah wah’ing and I couldn’t be happier! The only pedals I didn’t sell are the Analogman King of Tone, the SolidGoldFx Commuication Breakdown ( double Tone Bender Mk 1.5 and Mk II ) an MXR Sugar Drive, Vertex Ultra Phonix and HRM as well as their Boost and a J Rockett the Dude because I love the Dumble tone.

    Great video, guys! If you power up the Carbon Copy with a 12v adapter (it's safe, search it), the repeats will get clearer/brighter and the modulation more spacial. If anyone is thinking of selling the original and buying the new one, try this before! Have a nice weekend, cheers!

    Great Vid Guys. Been playing for 40yrs and I always feel like a kid in a candy store when watching guitar shop talk. I use several guitar set ups from modeling to stop box. The digital realm is often necessary but I love the old school stuff by far.

    To be honest, they all sounded great!
    Out of the 2 MXR's I think I prefer the original, just because the darker repeats seem to get out of the way more.

    Great video, as always! You're such a fantastic wealth of knowledge Daniel.
    This video also expresses why I've kept the Carbon Copy on my board even after owning (and selling) a bunch of expensive delay pedals. I love the way it creates a warm wash behind what I'm playing, and I adore the artifacts that occur at higher delay values. No idea it was designed by George Tripps either, thats a really cool piece of trivia!

    Hi Guys, Greetings from Berklee College of Music! I just want to humbly point out that the Malekko Ekko 616 probably deserves the title of Modern Classic as far as analog delays are concerned and pre-dates the MXR Carbon Copy by a few years. I feel that MXR made a "carbon copy" of the Malekko to keep up with the boutique market. The Malekko falls right in between the two MXR's regarding brightness, has true pitch vibrato on board, and features a smaller footprint. Most pros here in Boston use the Strymon products but the die-hard analog guys use the Malekko. Keep up the great work! I'm addicted to "That Pedal Show".

    What I like is that you can get the MXR out of the timeline but you can't get the timeline out of the MXR. Great video and I feel more confident in my timeline now after watching this. I would prefer the new CCB over the original. I also had the original and didn't like it for the dark repeats.

    I know why they say the original copy is dark. The pedal casing IS kinda very dark greenish-blackish color. But these are digital kids out there. Kids, they want brighter colors! I mean, have you ever seen the kindy classroom walls painted in greenish black? So, that's why the bright carbon copy comes in bright green! Hahahahahaha. Kidding guys. I wanted the Bright CC but they sent me the original. It's okay. I kinda like it.

    I own the original Carbon Copy and found that sometimes the repeats are too present in the mix and that can be annoying at some situations (as it happens with all delays, I presume). But maybe that can get worse with the brighter unit. I imagine that the brighter repeats can get too much in the way. The bright one is probably great for the playing solo at home, but in a band I would go with the original all the way.

  • @manifestgtr
    @manifestgtr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Aside from doing the dotted/16th note trick, why exactly would you want a sharp, pointed delay sound? Isn't the point of a delay pedal usually to sit just underneath your original sound and add space? At least that's what i've always looked for in a delay. Even slap backs seem to work best when the delayed signal is at least a little darker. I don't know, maybe that's just what my ears have become accustomed to over the years.

    • @YngtchieMusic
      @YngtchieMusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm the same way. I had a little Guyatone delay that was great as an effect, because it has a nice, pronounced sound. But I don't want to necessarly HEAR the delay as much as FEEL it. I wanna kinda forget it's there, and instead let it become part of my overall sound. Kinda like when you're using compression for an overall fuller sound. To me, a great delay is one that you'll notice the minute you turn it off, because you lose so much space.
      So when I first tried the Carbon Copy, I was so happy. This was the sound I had been looking for, because it sounded so natural and discrete. Love it, it's the pedal that I don't wanna part with.

  • @paulmandes4810

    I like the dark sound of the MXR Carbon Copy, if I felt the need for clean repeats (Edge style) I would use digital delay.
    I don't understand the appeal of the Electro Hamonix Memory Man, as it sound too clean to me (and very expensive). I guess the cleaner pedals are a halfway between grimy analog and digital.

      I'm not entirely sure, but I would tend to think not. Worst case scenario is that it'll overload the amp and make the tubes distort. I don't think it'd be much different than if you REAAALLLLYYYY pushed the front end of the amp with a boost or something.
      Again. I'm not sure. It may be different.

    Great video!
    I'm very interested in Walrus Audio's Bellwether. Check it out and let us know what you think. It's an analog delay with some great features like a tone control, modulation rate and depth controls, etc.

    What if instead of terms like "dark" and "bright" we used "organic" and "shrill"? It seems to me the argument has been framed with the terminology used. I like the "dark" and "organic" sound best but there is room for a "bright" and "shrill" sound in my mind for certain things too...

    I like the carbon copy but now I am thinking of going for a memory man.

    I was thinking the mxr was holding it’s on against the memory man... up until 13:55. The MXR is so lacking when compared back to back that strat guy can’t even finish playing the riff.

    geez guys couldn't you have given the blend/mix knob a decent nudge? the repeats are so quiet.... the first repeat is about 20% of the volume of the original note. turn the sucker up!

    The Bright version should have added two dials to control modulation.

    In the eurorack world you can get BBD's without the filter, so that you can decide for yourself by adding one. Some of the noise is this piercing high frequency (clocknoise?), so I understand why you wouldn't want that.
    Here's an example:

    They should make an analog delay with a tone knob.

      +Jon Merlin It may be horrible for what you're using it for but it's been wildly successful for a reason.

    The bright CC had the chorus/modulation set on at the end so it sounded overly saturated. The CC original has alot more mids. I have the CC and original MMD, but I really don't end to pull out the MMD because of the size. I can serial 2 CC deluxe for the space a single MMD takes up. There is also a practical concern.
    Strymon is definitely good enough, but there is no magic on the sound. I wouldn't call it sterile, but it is a bit processed and "too perfect".

  • @GabrielCastellarTV
    @GabrielCastellarTV 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Also to comment on digital va.analog, a digital delay like the strymon is really creative but it's 1 dimensional. There's not much uniqueness to the repeats. Think of it as snow flakes. The analog snow flakes are all unique. And the digital ones are not.
