Clifton Carlson ALWAYS love turning up the volume on that riff when he gets up to the Cathedral...kinda like what the Who might have done in "The Kids are Alright" ....
Wayne's World 2 brought me here. Someone commented that the gas station scene was a joke on the terrible performance of the attendant. Now that I saw the original scene, holy hell they were right. That guy couldn't act his way out of a cardboard box.
How can you judge his acting when he only has 3 lines? Besides the point of his role is to be slow in giving directions and thus increase the main character’s anxiety about finding the church in time.
This movie established Hoffman and Ross's career. From then on they would have notable lead and supporting roles in notable films, and they would be nominated for several performance awards.
This part of the movie really disproves the common theory that Ben didn’t truly love Elaine. You don’t go to this much trouble for someone you don’t love. It wasn’t just about his own desire for her. He knew she was making the same mistake her mother made and was going to end up just like her - trapped and miserable in a loveless marriage - and wanted to save her from that. Whether or not they stayed together after the final scene is irrelevant. He did this for her, not for himself.
Allen Street? Ah, yes. I once knew a girl who lived on Allen Street. Long time ago, when I was a young man. Not a day passes I don't think of her and the promise that I made which I will always keep. That one perfect day on Allen Street. That's uh, five blocks up, two over.
Heh. If you pause it at 1:18, you'll see how just after the gas station attendant hollers, "Y'need any gas, Father!?" the ACTUAL GAS GAUGE is laying hard left, at EMPTY! Then, moments later, Benjamin runs out of gas. Love accurate details...
Bertram Ashe actually I daily drive a Spider and when the gauge sits that low and without bouncing around while driving with the red light on you actually have 1/4 of a tank left! Now in the movie there is no red light on the gauge that’s because if you ground the terminal to make it show empty like they did for the movie the red light won’t turn on even though it’s all the way to empty. In an old American car once the gauge hits empty you’re completely out of gas.
"The Bo Diddley Strum" as he peals out of the gas station, and as the car dies, running out of gas, strums gradually become muted, till they stop when the car dies. Perfect!
Actor and TV director Noam Pitlik is the guy in the gas station who offers to tank up Benjamin's Alfa Romeo. Pitlik was on "Hogan's Heroes" a fair amount around this time, was a member of the group therapy session on "The Bob Newhart Show," and directed many "Barney Miller" episodes.
I was hoping to see a comment about Noam Pitlik. Well done, sir. He also had a small part in an episode of The Odd Couple. He was the captain of a bowling team that Felix and Oscar were competing with for a league championship.
I came across this as I was looking at the church scene where Benjamin, seeing that Elaine is now married, let’s out a tortured “Oh Jesus. God. No.” I remember the first time I saw the movie I thought that Dustin Hoffman portrayed a very credible runner. He has the carriage and leg turnover of a middle distance runner. He’s cooking along pretty good in the scene.
Alex Caruso it’s a sad thing too, when Ben is running towards the camera close to the end of the shot, the director is using a telephonic lens to apply a depth of field illusion to make it seem like he is getting nowhere
Cecilia I would kill to have a YT clip of the scene from All The President's Men where he runs like mad to catch Redford in his car. Just does it for me.
What will really cook your noodle: Were the running scenes in Forrest Gump actually supposed to be an homage to this scene? Obviously the Graduate must have had a profound impact on most directors would be working in the 90s.
Do we have to put up with this? I mean, couldn't they have gotten a better actor for the attendant? I know it was just a small part, but I think they could've done better than that.
This has some parts filmed in La Verne Ca.!so does Waynes World 2 !the church i believe is still standing !i dont know if both cars are the same !just saw the original !on TCMD!GREAT MOVIE !
Actually the name of that street is “D street” and it is located in Laverne California…I live a few blocks away from the church they used for the movie scene…the whole area looks like Santa Barbara ca. that is the reason why they used it.
Gas Station, no longer there, was in Calabasas, CA across from the historic Leonis Adobe mansion. He's headed south, away from Santa Barbara, another continuity issue.
Never did I see Dustin Hoffman run twice as fast since he would be completely out of breath. In fact Dustin Hoffman ran like a true Olympic Champ sprinter. If he didn’t run that fast, Katharine Ross and Brian Avery would have already gotten married and rode away from the church. And the ending would have been different with Ben meeting at the outside of the church with the guests already leaving. So Ben would have been violently expressing his loss of Elaine.
The gas station attendant- Bow do we know he wasn’t special? I have an uncle who always needed someone to look after him, talks just like the gas station attendant. How do we know that isn’t the perfect actor playing the part of a special gas attendant.
The dial doesn’t spin on the phone when he dials it! Guess that would take too long. Dustin does a good job of selling it though. Little details of being a great actor.
Hubby and i just watched The Graduate, again for the umpteenth time! Dustin Hoffman was prob 12 years younger than Anne Bancroft!? But we got to wonder, what Make and Model was Ben s red Car. MG, no. It has the "fin" features on the back. Looks like a Fiat in the front,no, i knew it had to be Italian though. Thanks Google!Alfa Romeo Spyder Cool
“I made a promise to her that I will always keep. Not a day goes by I don’t think about that one, perfect day on Allen St.”
*_choking back tears_*
"Thank you!"
The fact that the music slows down as he runs out of gas is just perfect
Clifton Carlson ALWAYS love turning up the volume on that riff when he gets up to the Cathedral...kinda like what the Who might have done in "The Kids are Alright" ....
and the slap at 1:07
Yeah I hate it when my guitar runs out of gas, it does the same
"Allen Street?... Ah yes, I once knew a girl who lived on Allen St..."
That one perfect day on allen street :p
🤣😂😅
Gordon Street! Lol
Couldn’t we get a better actor? I know it’s a small part but I think we can do better than this. Lol. (Charleston Heston comes out)
Long time ago, when I was a young man.
Heston and Meyers perfected this scene.

That gas station guy was a terrible actor. They should have got Charlton Heston or someone.
lol

Good eye..lol I missed that. I love details too.

nearly all the barney miller episodes. that guy was good. that show after dietrich shows up...brilliant.
I've heard of Noam-- Barney Miller is one of my very favorite shows!!
I was hoping to see a comment about Noam Pitlik. Well done, sir. He also had a small part in an episode of The Odd Couple. He was the captain of a bowling team that Felix and Oscar were competing with for a league championship.
Damn, Dustin Hoffman is running like somebody is about to look at his Google search history

You don't see long tracking shots like that anymore in todays films.
Alex Caruso AND without music!!!!!

Poor kid...first got an affair with a goldigger, and now chasing after her daughter. This is a good, and sad movie.

ELAINE!
1:55 ...aaaaannnddddd.... Marathon Man!
If he'd gotten gas he wouldn't have had to run and get on the bus afterwards.
He would have had no time to stop Elaine from being sent off
Oh come on I would have at least gotten some gas. That was such a cool car shame he loses it.
My friend lives around the block from that church in LaVerne,
This has some parts filmed in La Verne Ca.!so does Waynes World 2 !the church i believe is still standing !i dont know if both cars are the same !just saw the original !on TCMD!GREAT MOVIE !
Listen to the music and then listen to Georg Michael's Faith
Then listen to Bo Diddley and you've more or less come full circle
Actually the name of that street is “D street” and it is located in Laverne California…I live a few blocks away from the church they used for the movie scene…the whole area looks like Santa Barbara ca. that is the reason why they used it.
I know the guy in the service station is only playing a small part, but you think they could have got a better actor...???
I thought he was perfect!!!
That one perfect day on Gordon St
That one promise I made which I will always keep...
Your quoting Wayne’s world 2 spoof when Chuck stepped in 🤣 classic 👍
Seems like a realistic reaction from a stranger who is trying to remember recall info all of a sudden
I always find the fact that master Shifu sounded like a 20 year old at one point very hard to believe even though it’s completely true
Training for:
Marathon Man

At the rooming house he had no change; now all of a sudden he does
What kind of lens was the shot where Dustin Hoffman runs toward the camera shot on? Wide angle? He runs but it looks like he's staying in place.
The opposite, it's shot with a tele lens.
Telephoto lens. They are long lenses which make the objects look farther away then they are and they compress the spaces between objects.
The dial doesn’t spin on the phone when he dials it! Guess that would take too long. Dustin does a good job of selling it though. Little details of being a great actor.
It does spin. The outer circles/numbers are stationary but you can clearly see the inner dial spinning.
Très belle scène. Sinon Alfa Roméo ne pouvait pas espérer meilleur pub pour sa "duetto"
Sir, why are you yelling at me?

Bancroft was 36, Hoffman was 30.
