  • In this episode of DIY Guitar Making, I am back to work on Guitar #86, a Parlor Guitar with Wenge back and sides. I am installing Steinberger gearless tuners, and recessing the tuners into the headplate.

Great timing Eric. I'm at this stage on my own build and the headstock is fractionally too thick for the Steinberger tuners. So this is the perfect solution and I think it will look far nicer as you have demonstrated with yours.

In David Russell Young’s book “The Steel String Guitar: Construction and Repair” updated edition pages 102-105, he talks about countersinking tuner washers and has pictures demonstrating his process. He does it to help prevent the lacquer finish from blistering when the tuner bushing is tightened down. I like how it looks. The only problem I could see in doing this is if you ever decide to switch to open back style tuners with no washers. Thanks again for your videos.

Ah yes, nothing says splinter inflammation like a nice piece of wenge... Great video! In my current build I'm countersinking the Steinbergers as well specifically for the extra degrees of string angle, which means I can use less headstock angle fwhich should add more stength.

Wenge is a bear to work with and the little splinters are like miniature barbed knifeblades that dig deeper into your skin as you work or try to get them out later. You'll still have some of the annoying, painful splinters weeks later as a reminder. Folks, protect your eyes and don't ever touch them or any other delicate tissues you care about when you're working with wenge.

If the break angle helps make the tone better, can’t you have the strings go down through holes and connect on the other side of the headstock to make the angle steeper without making the headstock bend back more?

countersinking make everything look more professional. I built a guitar with the same tuners but didnt counter sink them. After watching you I think I will counter sink them.

Where'd you get that bit for countersinking the tuners? I'd love to pick one up and do this to an SG I'm working on.

Are those tuners good for nylon strings?

I don't much about that kind of tuner. Is there an advantage or is it mainly a style thing?

A question... What is the maximum depth you can counter sink these tuners? I wouldn't like to have the tuners loose in the headstock.
Thank you for your learned reply!
