    I remember my first lan was with my 166mmx and a voodoo2. Had to play half life in 640x480 to improve fps. Then with the duron 700 I could play in 800x600 no problem. Still got this voodoo2. Good old time.

      Can't believe you still have that, that's awesome! It's so rare that someone keeps stuff like that for so long. Unfortunatelly most of my things I bought recently because at the time I had to sell as I upgraded. That's very cool though, thanks for the comment.

    Interesting! I knew it was CPU dependant (as you called out obv) but I figured the Voodoo 2 would have been more powerful than it was here. I bet quite a few people upgraded this path or a similar one and then perhaps were dissapointed in the lack of boost in most games. But that's why it's fascinating to explore. Nice video!

    • @SUCRA
      @SUCRA  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean to say that this video is pointless and that I should use at least a 4 GHz xeon to properly show the capabilities of the Voodoo 2. eeeer you might be right. But you're right, I was so sure there would be clear gains with the Voodoo 2 that I didn't think the last video I made was a problem... eeerr, yeah. Thanks for your support, Rik. Always nice having you around here.

    Excellent video. The difference between the V1 and V2 is big in games that are not CPU intensive like the Quake 2/3 engine games and small in CPU intensive games the Unreal engine games. But even in the cases where the difference is small you still have an advantage with the V2 because you can play in 800x600 with the same FPS as in 640x480.

    • @SUCRA

      Absolutely, the difference is substancial when it the CPU os software give it legs. At one point I'll test them in an over powered system to see how far apart these particular cards are. And you're right, Voodoo 2 is king when image quality comes into play.

  • @modernandretrogaming
    @modernandretrogaming 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    There is a difference even at Half-Life. I played Unreal and Unreal Tournament with Pentium 133 and even there with Voodoo 2 games worked good, also Tomb Raider III worked great there. Glide is a low level API so games using that API can work better with slower cpu.

    • @SUCRA
      @SUCRA  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're absolutely right. There is a difference even in Half-Life, but as soon as the CPU is demanded like in big areas the extra GPU is pointless. You can see higher framerates in confined spaces with the voodoo 2 in this situation. Have a great weekend, Andrew.

    2:27 In Half-Life with the Voodoo 2 the frame rate is a little higher overall and in some parts of the game it is 2x higher than with the Voodoo 1. Very interesting video :). Greetings from Romania.

    As far as speed, I don't see any way the Voodoo2 would ever be slower, but in a fiscal sense, better to upgrade your CPU of course (back in the day).

    Awesome work Bruno! I really enjoyed this one greatly and found it to be quite interesting. I re-watched your last video and have to say that the one thing the Voodoo 2 seems to really have here is “better” VGA quality which, as you noted with most of the differences, is subjective. For sure, the Voodoo 2 was a real and reasonable upgrade path at the time with this hardware; I knew someone with a P166 classic and a Matrox Millennium that dropped a Voodoo 2 in! I don’t think there’s really such thing as an underpowered CPU for a Voodoo 2 and would push back against the arguments by saying that while, yeah, it’s bottlenecked, the damn Voodoo 2 scales all the way up to early Pentium 4 speeds, and it’s not like people actually carried their Voodoo 2 along for upgrades for that long. I would bet that most never saw much over a ~500MHz Pentium III, if that. But, as to the games, I actually preferred the muted colors of the Voodoo 1 in Unreal, but Shogo looked much better on the Voodoo 2, despite the gamma difference. Quake II is so damn well-optimized and that was one result I did not expect! That difference was nuts! I did watch the Half Life section a few times and can’t tell much of a difference. I’m curious as to how a 6MB or 8MB Voodoo 1 would compare in these circumstances. The 208MHz overclock on the 166MMX is awesome-I’m quite impressed with the performance and think that it’s probably not far off of a 233MMX. Hell, it might be faster with an 83MHz bus. Looking back on my tests of the Rendition V2200, I found that CPU scaling with early 3D accelerators is weird. PCI clock does make a difference and if it’s running at ~41MHz on your board (which I’d wager it was), that would pump performance up on the V2 and V1 a good bit and achieve pretty nice results-exactly what you showed! I really liked this and the side-by-sides were awesome. The Voodoo 1 may be THE Voodoo Graphics, but something about the Voodoo 2 just warms my heart. It’s the card I lusted after as a kid, and it wasn’t until last year that I got a (mismatched) set and damn are they fun cards! Thanks again for all of your hard work, Bruno! Videos like this and your previous one are absolute treasures, and they really taught me a lot about hardware I’ve always found fascinating! Thanks for sharing, buddy! This was epic!

    • @SUCRA
      @SUCRA  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it, buddy! I like your argument about the image quality, I think you're right on this one, the v1 really doesn't have the best output and you can kind of see that more in an LCD monitor for some reason. Seems like it was made for CRT and wasn't expected to be used with an LCD. The voodoo 2 does look a bit better. But this upgrade path must have been taken by so many, in 1998 anyone would definitely buy the v2 over the v1 in hopes of carrying it over to future builds. I ran mine with a K5 and then with a P3 600. But only briefly as I upgrade to a V3 then a V5. Thanks for reminding me that the overclock is on the FSB and therefore also on the PCI slots, I forgot about that! 😆 I got the perfect build to stick this V2 in, but first, we have some business to take care of! Cheers, my friend!

    Oooh! Quake II AND the K6-2 3DNow patch with Voodoo²! Pretty much = Socket 7 to the MAX ♥:♥
    What's the Voltage settings on your motherboard?
    And to answer your question: NO I would not!
    But then again, never had a Voodoo only Voodoo² = Why would I downgrade EVEN if my CPU was a K6 200MHz - in 1998?

    • @SUCRA
      @SUCRA  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah, I want to visit the K6, I never actually owned one. But I would really need a super socket 7 mobo. I'm not sure about the voltage settings, but it's a pure socket 7, wont go over 208 MHz. Deal with answering this is that Internet didn't have all that information back then, many times we didn't know what we were getting into, but you're right, knowing the reality of the performance of these cards and the necessary CPU one should never say yes to this haha.

    Hello, Bruno!
    I remember using my VooDoo 1 with my PPro 200 but when I upgraded my system with a P2 300 I also got a pair of 8MB VooDoo2, the system was clearly under heavy CPU bottleneck so I ended up selling one of the 2 cards, sadly I didn't appreciate old hardware back then so I lost track of the VooDoo 1. A way faster PIII or the Slot-A system that I put together later would had taken my VooDoo 2 card to way higher performance but I was already with my mind set on nVidia TNT2 cards.
    I need to put together a system for my VooDoo 2 and see for myself how troublesome is to use the newer card in the oldest games.

      The Voodoo 1 and a Pentium Pro seems like a great combo! But of course a P2 was a great upgrade, and yeah, 1 Voodoo 2 is quite enough for most games except probably a handful including Quake 2. The TNT2 cards were really a game changer, Nvidia was coming up in the 3d game and it was a strong showing unfortunatelly for 3dfx. Yeah man, put that system together, take some pics, make some vids, let's see it! Thanks for the support!

    You said the main difference between Voodoo 1 and Voodoo 2 was the faster clocks and extra transistors. The real main advantage though was the Voodoo 2 has two Texture mapping units per pixel pipeline vs only one on Voodoo 1. Games that can use multitexturing like quake 2 will clearly show the difference. Also as you mentioned you need a faster processor. The CPU handles T&L (triangle setup) on 3dfx cards, not the graphics card.

    Voodoo1 and drivers rely less on the cpu for its performance. this is most notable with launch drivers and a 6mb voodoo 1 like a canopus pure 3d or a miro highscore 1
    the voodoo2 scales better with a faster cpu, but it is my contention that a voodoo1 at 6mb will perform better than an 8mb voodoo2 on anything slower than about a 300mhz p2. it comes down to drivers at that point more than anything but the voodoo1 architecture was designed to run on slower cpu so relied on the cpu for less calculations per cycle afaik. the canopus pure3d box art has some suggestions to this being the case aswell.
    but i ran a 12mb voodoo2 on a Pentium 166mmx bitd. it ran fine. upgraded to a 300mhz k62 and it still ran well. i never thought a bottleneck was happening bitd. all my friends computers for reference ran the same games slower so.. i was happy lol

      What's your take on the newly made ones? Some guy made some V1 sli boards, really crazy stuff.

      Interesting, second person that says that, but I haven't run into a game that doesn't run on the v2. Any examples to watch out for?

    Cara, boa tarde! Beleza? Eu tenho um sistema parecido, mas estou usando uma voodoo4 PCI, eu atualizei o processador de um pentium 233 mmx para um k6-2 450mhz, mas meu fps no quake 2 não chega nem perto do seu fps com a voodoo 2. Sabe se tem alguma coisa que eu possa melhorar? A placa mãe que estou usando é a asus p5s-b com 128MB de RAM. Obrigado.

      Desculpa, viajei. Toda forma procura o último driver lá que vai ter. É um que server pra V4 e V5. Fiz algumas comparações da V4 com a V5 no video que indiquei ao final, caso tenha interesse.
