I know a lady whose mother was an avid sewer her mother's every single room in the three-story house was packed floor to ceiling with sewing material and sewing supplies. She didn't sew so she had to get rid of all the fabric and supplies. Luckily her husband owned a warehouse she took over part of the warehouse and open a fabric sale shop. She set up self-serve tables to cut the fabric, sold it for $2 a yard. She literally had bus loads of sewers and Quilters come to buy up the fabric. 3 years later she's still selling fabric😅
Stephanie, I love this video. My mom owned a fabric shop in the 70s. I have great memories of walking around the store, looking at all the fabric. Ohhh, and when she got new fabric, what a day. When I was about 12 years old she had some errands to run and left me alone to watch the store. In walks a lady! She started buying (I had never cut and priced for a customer) anyway, as I remember she bought an enormous amount of fabric, zippers, thread, buttons you name it. I was so nervous measuring and cutting all that beautiful fabric. I did it though, when my mom returned, she was so proud of me for being able to handle everything. And, the lady became a long standing customer. I still visit fabric stores and the smell of the fabric bring's back all the fun times I had with my mom.
I was born in the 60's and I swear, I remember seeing clothes made out of some of those fabrics. What you called backed acrylic, we called "bonded" fabric. The reptile printed fugly fabric was typical of long housecoats/robes women wore with mandarin collars and long zippers that went from the neck to about mid chest or longer, and always had a small gold charm attached to the zipper tab. I was 18 in 1977 & qualified as a registered nurse in 1980. I remember some of this fabric first time round. I love it all, takes me back to the good old days !!
My husband keeps telling me that he’d have no idea what to do with my larrrrgggggeeee fabric stash if anything happened to me. Ok, just cuz I’ve been diagnosed with terminal cancer should be enough incentive for me to ‘deal’ with…but no, I tell myself that I’ll sew something out of my stash. I have to have a goal. Needless to say I’m in pretty good health considering. I will get some summer sewing done….when I stop watching TH-cam 😎
I have dreamed of getting to a yard sale that didn't go over well and the owners loaded all of granny's fabric, notions, patterns, books, magazines, and sewing machines for free -- I did mention I dream about this. But at this point, I have more stuff than I can ever use. I love the flannel with the pink flowers!

I burst out laughing SO HARD at the “do you wanna be a reptiiiiile”? 😂😂😂 I love you so much Also I, too, would have called the fungly paisley fabric “apostrophe” because I’m so used to 70s paisley being psychedelic. I had no idea that specific shape itself was the paisley! I 100% thought paisley was always floral adjacent.

I'm so old that I remember wearing slips and undies made of nylon tricot, that clammy and sweaty fabric from hell. I don't live in Florida, but I do live in a state hot enough to have my AC on now, in early November. I also am old enough to remember the thick sweaty double-knit polyester dresses of the late 1960s thru 1970s. I don't miss them.
@@janetburke2739 I’m old myself! I never had a hate for tricot and other polyester type fabrics that so many do. Other than once you sweat in it, the smell never goes away! I grew up sewing with all those double knits and polyester fabrics. I feel so fortunate to have grown up in a time that offered so many different fabrics and when making clothes at home was much cheaper than ready to wear. It’s so sad that sewing has been removed from schools. I learned almost all my sewing skills in Jr and Senior high school. From what I’ve learned watching many different sewing channels, the only place to learn now is in fashion school in college!! That is so sad! My teachers in HighSchool were excellent seamstresses. Once I got past the general classes, they were happy to teach me one on one in independent sewing classes. I made everything except bras and blue jeans. Including wool coats, underpants and slips. No one in my family sewed so school was a wonderful resource. I’m happy to see young people taking an interest and learning this important skill.

I'd have gone and gotten a second truck. Not necessarily different one, but a second one for sure. Even if that required loading one, leaving it full and coming back to load a second one.
How amazing is that! You found some really cool things! This reminds me of my friend. Her and her husband buy properties and turn them into rental properties. They bought a property with a commercial front on the first floor and two apartments on the second floor in Fairmont, WV. The first floor had a tailoring/custom gown shop that was abandoned when the owner died. There was a TON of cool patterns, beautiful fabrics (including SILKS), and the best score - industrial Bernina sewing machines and sergers, an industrial embroidering machine, and Cricut machines!

Its so funny cus i remember stirrup pants (and turtlenecks) as a little girl that i positively HATED and yet here u am again, 35 yeats later n jeggings and leggings n SEARCHING HIGH AND WIDE 4 turtlenecks. Its funny hoe it comes back around. Lol!
Did you find any plisse? Think the thin seer-suckerish cotton fabric your grandma used for nightie. I'd be tempted to take all you find because I can't find it now.
And I thought I had too much fabric in my stash….you’d laugh at my one cupboard full!! You are a good woman! I love all the fuglies! Rugs = skirt, with a chunky sweater on top and boots, a 70 s vibe. Reptile = wrap dress or top. Magic eye = can only be a kimono. Apostrophes = jacket for your favourite bookworm. Space needle = a cardigan jacket. Jungle = agreed, coat lining. Bright tweed = a Mary Tyler Moore pant suit, or a gorgeous coat or jacket. Duck hunt = sweaters for kids to play in, and be very visible on the playground.
HA! I had a bonanza like this once. A dressmaker decided to leave her cabinetmaker husband for another man. Left behind her shop full of supplies and told him to 'sell it and send her the money'. I got bolts and bolts of fabric, cabinets of thread and notions, and boxes of patterns... plus a nice pair of handmade dressers, all for $120. $50 per dresser and $20 to haul everything else away. I'm still dipping into that stash almost 20 years later.

Whenever I feel stressed out breathing fire over my family, it takes only a few minutes of stroking beautiful fabrics to have me purring like a contented kitten. Wow Steph that is one hell of a haul you have brought home. Have looked at your website and love the fabrics. Wish it wasnt so expensive to ship to Australia unless you have fouond a cheaper way. I understand how hard this would have been to arrange all this get it scanned together etc. That crazy yellow fabric reminds me of a vintage dress i just purchased mine is in blues black grey and white.
There is a glitch she’s currently trying to get rid of, that’s bumping shipping costs. The shipping for my order ended up being about half what the site said it would be. Steph caught it and refunded the difference. So it might not be as bad as it could, might be worth sending her an email and asking.
I love the problems you have. I do the same on a smaller scale. Just got 1000+ yards of flannel from a collection. It is so fun and overwhelming to go thru and decide what to do with all of it. It was a high to see the fabric in the 2nd bldg.
This is so fun to watch, even though I thought at the beginning "Nooooooo, you did not even take a third or quarter of what you paid for" :D But your husband might be happy, that you limited yourself to "only" a truck. From your footage, I am amazed that everything was in such good condition. I would not expect such a bright and open stored fabric stash after more than 40years after closing. my grandmother had a smock she wore when in the kitchen made of that green flowered fabric, and the same pattern also came in a blue background with lighter blue, yellow and pale pink flowers on it, and in a pink background with flowers in shades of very pale pink, orange, and yellow, i only know because she had ones made of those two as well. she sewed them herself sometime in the late 60s or early 70s, i have a small piece of the blue she made into a kitchen towel left, never thought i'd see that pattern in the wild again, it's still a very cute print even to today's eyes.

You have quite the haul (literally)!! If you happen to find a useable bolt of multi-colored paisley with border along one selvage, please post it in a video, I have been searching for a fabric similar to a skirt I made in 1971/72 that was just gorgeous! I loved that skirt so much, but I got too big to wear it, and after saving the skirt for its fabric for many YEARS, I think I had to throw it out because of water damage from a basement flood. :( If it has the right vibe I will buy the whole bolt!!
My mother loved polyester double knit anything, she didn’t have to iron it. I hated it and wouldn’t ware any of it- a bit of tension between mom and I. What a fun find especially the pattern cabinets.

I took over two more apartments, one for CLOTH things (sewing quilting mending costuming) and the other for fleece to spin and now a whole yarn store worth of finished handspun yarn to weave into blankets )))) I did have a real yarn store years ago and have a whole spare room filled to ceiling with boxes of gorgeous commercial yarn. There's going to be one heck of a fine estate sale ))))))
I love this video. It was sure a walk down memory lane. I remember having things made out of the terry cloth. By the way, I loved purple. I learned to sew on single and double knits in high school. I saw so many fabrics that I remember the patterns of. My mom had a wool suit that was the same pattern as that herringbone, but hers was lavender shades. Thanks for the entertainment!

If I could, may I suggest a jumpsuit with your share of the bootie... hear me out - go for a 40's style, complete Rosie the Riveter is a Bad *ss vibe. The kids are calling them 'Boiler Suits' and they can be quite chique. With that fabric you could wear it to the grocery store or a night out where you feel like dressing it up. Wow. Just a funny little peekaboo Moment in the daily Life ❤ 🦆 Than the Gepard/Leo Print: Imagine a dark blue Jeans Jacket and the shoulder Part in the Back is showing Just a little amount of that one The bright blue would be perfekt for the visible trimming of an Chanel Like Classic Jacket... Or for the inner lining of the Cape on a Classic english trench coat... Those fabrics are pure fun! ❤

Lucky lady! Fantastic buy! I'm looking for a type of fabric I don't know the name of. In the 60s and 70s we used it for bathrobes. Altho mom called it 'fleece' it was a lightweight fabric smoothly textured on one side with a definite bonded inside that reminds me of old poly suits. Always a solid color. Not terry of any type.
Oh I know EXACTLY what you are talking about! My mom had one from the 80's she loved til it fell apart. I think I have a very lightweight version of that coming soon (it is on the table somewhere. Email me at likethenorthcountry@gmail.com so I can let you know when I find/list it.

You say it try-cot? My grandma always called it tree-co. She used to make quilts and pillowcases with tricot and they are my favorite!!

Its so funny cus i remember stirrup pants (and turtlenecks) as a little girl that i positively HATED and yet here u am again, 35 yeats later n jeggings and leggings n SEARCHING HIGH AND WIDE 4 turtlenecks. Its funny hoe it comes back around. Lol!
Did you find any plisse? Think the thin seer-suckerish cotton fabric your grandma used for nightie. I'd be tempted to take all you find because I can't find it now.

And I thought I had too much fabric in my stash….you’d laugh at my one cupboard full!! You are a good woman! I love all the fuglies! Rugs = skirt, with a chunky sweater on top and boots, a 70 s vibe. Reptile = wrap dress or top. Magic eye = can only be a kimono. Apostrophes = jacket for your favourite bookworm. Space needle = a cardigan jacket. Jungle = agreed, coat lining. Bright tweed = a Mary Tyler Moore pant suit, or a gorgeous coat or jacket. Duck hunt = sweaters for kids to play in, and be very visible on the playground.

HA! I had a bonanza like this once. A dressmaker decided to leave her cabinetmaker husband for another man. Left behind her shop full of supplies and told him to 'sell it and send her the money'.
I got bolts and bolts of fabric, cabinets of thread and notions, and boxes of patterns... plus a nice pair of handmade dressers, all for $120.
$50 per dresser and $20 to haul everything else away.
I'm still dipping into that stash almost 20 years later.

Oh my word... just stumbled on your video and after 1 minute in watching, I subscribed. I never knew I would find someone just as crazy as I am about fabrics! Whenever I feel stressed out breathing fire over my family, it takes only a few minutes of stroking beautiful fabrics to have me purring like a contented kitten. Wow Steph that is one hell of a haul you have brought home. Have looked at your website and love the fabrics. Wish it wasnt so expensive to ship to Australia unless you have fouond a cheaper way. I understand how hard this would have been to arrange all this get it scanned together etc. That crazy yellow fabric reminds me of a vintage dress i just purchased mine is in blues black grey and white.
Yeah I just watch for entertainment value as shipping to Australia is just not going to be in my budget.
There is a glitch she’s currently trying to get rid of, that’s bumping shipping costs. The shipping for my order ended up being about half what the site said it would be. Steph caught it and refunded the difference. So it might not be as bad as it could, might be worth sending her an email and asking.
Brought back memories of going to fabric warehouses with my mom where bolts of fabric were piled to the ceilings. The terry cloth fabric was amazing!!

I love the problems you have. I do the same on a smaller scale. Just got 1000+ yards of flannel from a collection. It is so fun and overwhelming to go thru and decide what to do with all of it. It was a high to see the fabric in the 2nd bldg.

This is so fun to watch, even though I thought at the beginning "Nooooooo, you did not even take a third or quarter of what you paid for" :D But your husband might be happy, that you limited yourself to "only" a truck. From your footage, I am amazed that everything was in such good condition. I would not expect such a bright and open stored fabric stash after more than 40years after closing. The denim patchwork stretch fabric makes me think of the patchwork jeans and bib overalls with bell bottoms from the 70’s
my grandmother had a smock she wore when in the kitchen made of that green flowered fabric, and the same pattern also came in a blue background with lighter blue, yellow and pale pink flowers on it, and in a pink background with flowers in shades of very pale pink, orange, and yellow, i only know because she had ones made of those two as well. she sewed them herself sometime in the late 60s or early 70s, i have a small piece of the blue she made into a kitchen towel left, never thought i'd see that pattern in the wild again, it's still a very cute print even to today's eyes.

You have quite the haul (literally)!! If you happen to find a useable bolt of multi-colored paisley with border along one selvage, please post it in a video, I have been searching for a fabric similar to a skirt I made in 1971/72 that was just gorgeous! I loved that skirt so much, but I got too big to wear it, and after saving the skirt for its fabric for many YEARS, I think I had to throw it out because of water damage from a basement flood. :( If it has the right vibe I will buy the whole bolt!!

My mother loved polyester double knit anything, she didn’t have to iron it. I hated it and wouldn’t ware any of it- a bit of tension between mom and I. What a fun find especially the pattern cabinets.

I took over two more apartments, one for CLOTH things (sewing quilting mending costuming) and the other for fleece to spin and now a whole yarn store worth of finished handspun yarn to weave into blankets )))) I did have a real yarn store years ago and have a whole spare room filled to ceiling with boxes of gorgeous commercial yarn. There's going to be one heck of a fine estate sale ))))))

I love this video. It was sure a walk down memory lane. I remember having things made out of the terry cloth. By the way, I loved purple. I learned to sew on single and double knits in high school. I saw so many fabrics that I remember the patterns of. My mom had a wool suit that was the same pattern as that herringbone, but hers was lavender shades. Thanks for the entertainment!

I swear that pink floral flannel almost matches these blue floral sheets my grandparents had from the 1960s (that I think were still in their house until their house when it sold... Two years ago?).

I owned a costume shop in the 80's. so many of these last fabrics you are showing I would have fought for. I made most of the costumes that I rented or sold. What a fun load of fabric.!!!

That fabric with the yarn/rope design - just amazing. If I could, may I suggest a jumpsuit with your share of the bootie... hear me out - go for a 40's style, complete Rosie the Riveter is a Bad *ss vibe. The kids are calling them 'Boiler Suits' and they can be quite chique. With that fabric you could wear it to the grocery store or a night out where you feel like dressing it up.

Lucky lady! Fantastic buy! I'm looking for a type of fabric I don't know the name of. In the 60s and 70s we used it for bathrobes. Altho mom called it 'fleece' it was a lightweight fabric smoothly textured on one side with a definite bonded inside that reminds me of old poly suits. Always a solid color. Not terry of any type.

While I love chenille, it is always heavily textured in cables, etc. which doesn't seem like this description.
I remember cotton terry cloth knits that were slightly towel-y on one side and plain knit on the back. French terry?
