again - reading my mind on video ideas. Was literally asking my friend today what combos I should start off with with minimal risk to build my confidence to attack more. thanks Gabriel!

hey Gabe, I love the part of the video where you give general guidelines, i.e. “straight and long”, as in the middle of a spar a simple cue like this would be easier to remember and execute on. I think in the future these types of cues would be super helpful when you’re giving tips!

    My safe combos:
    - Jab, lead hook (yeah not much power but often lands when they try to parry)
    - Jab, front teep to their lead leg
    - Jab (feint), bodyjab
Tbh basically establishing the jab and throwing it a few times with power to make them flinch to it. If they flinch to the jab or shell upI get going.
Jab feint and when they shell up liverhook is my fave Nr.1

R u tall and long? For me jabs and teeps aren’t usually good since I have very short range so i love catching people with body kicks lol

@@hithere2631 I'm 1,83m. If I am the shorter fighter I jab with the jab while headslipping off to the right to get inside. But teeps to front leg still work as legs have better reach. Or time teeps/lowkicks to lead leg on their jab.

I think you need to state the sport for this to be true. I have a decent teep (from years of Muay Thai) but when I use it in MMA, it’s often swiped (easy to do even if it lands). Then if land even a few inches off line, it’s easy to get taken down to bad position. So to me, in MMA, the straight kick is actually high risk. Of course it also depends on the straight kick. You tend to go up more whereas the teep is sort of a push kick (easier to swipe). If it’s kickboxing then the risk isn’t as much. But getting taken down to a bad position can be game over in MMA. Not a great idea for a kick that isn’t going to be a game changer anyway. In Muay Thai I use my teep a lot. In MMA, I’m very cautious with it and more for feints than actually to land it.

I feel like the front kick is safer than round kicks because they are harder and more dangerous to catch. For round kicks all you have to do is let it hit you and reach for an overhook, but for a front kick you have to put both hands in the right place at the right time to catch the foot. Also from a grip on the foot, you have more options for escaping and defending a single leg opposed to if the grip was higher on the leg (coming from a wrestler)

Such an interesting video Gabriel, will definetly try testing the waters this way in sparring, and can you make a video on how to improve kicking speed?

How about a low kick with the front leg? Less power but fast/easy to land?

Well - I will take a stab as I have been here for Gabriel's Martial Arts and Kickboxing journey from the start when I started teaching him and our kids 35 years ago.
Many times you will hear Gabriel say "there is no one best style that has all the best techniques".
Hmmm.... I wonder where he could have picked up on that advice???? (oh ya - from ME!!!) Where did I learn that thought from? There have been many really smart influencers in fight sports over the years and one of the best examples of that was Bruce Lee.
The world is full of incredibly skilled and tough Martial Artist's and fighters so I will not be the guy who says "Bruce Lee - BEST EVER!!!!"
Bruce Lee was and has been one of the most famous.... very similar to the notoriety and star power of Muhammad Ali - and I feel the most important thing Bruce Lee did was be the guy who came along and asked you to look at what you are doing. Does that technique work, what about that.... why do it then???? Let's take the best techniques from all the styles and put them together.
That is the same thing that has happened in Kickboxing - which is just a word and encompasses all the people who do Kickboxing in the world.
You will notice that most of the best fighters in the world - the ones who actually have to get into the ring or cage and face off against each other where "which style you do has no real meaning other than "who is the better fighter in there?"
Most top fighters have incorporated the leg kicks of the Thai's, the hand skills and some of the appropriate head movement of top boxers, the Dutch Guard etc, etc, etc.
Gabriel has figured out what works best for him - which may well not be the same way which would be best for another fighters - hence he states "figure out what works best for you".
I hope that helps explain a bit about his approach, attitude towards Martial Arts, and why he fights the way he does.
There are just so many incredible examples out there to learn from. The K 1 Max fighters were an amazing example for fighters to watch the best starting in the early 2000's.
      Gabriel's dad - Keith Varga
