  • Have you ever stripped out the spark plug threads on your lawn mower, or other outdoor power equipment? Not really a big deal...watch this video and see how a daunting task can turn into a somewhat simple repair with the right tools, a little confidence, and some patience. There are several thread repair kits and brands on the market. In this video I use Sav-a-thread. Watch and learn!

    It you bring the piston up to tdc and then back it down to accommodate the tool, pack the inside with a paper towel it will act as a block for the shavings should any get past the grease. After the rethreading you can stick a shop vac over the hole and suck out any free shavings, then use needle nose pliers to pull out the towel. The leftover grease around the ring of the hole will get pushed out of the way by the towel coming out too. It's sort of a belt & suspenders solution to avoiding swarth in the piston.

    Nice video! I think that Heli-coil is the one of the easier kits out there. You saved that owner a lot buy not having to remove the head and possibly machine shop work.

      Thanks Dr.! What is your thread repair brand choice? Is there one you always go to, or do you just get whatever you can? Hope you and the family are doing well!

    I have a spark plug that I cut 3 grooves in the threads with a drimmel or grinder to use as a tap.
    This will act as a tap and clean up the threads in the head. almost 100% success rate. no need for the heli coil.

    The actual reason why you want to back off and brake the chips off when tapping a hole is so you dont jam up the tap and prevent braking a tap removing removing the hardened tap makes it a bad day for a mechanic! Lol

    Great video, have you ever used a piece of hose conected to a spark plug to start them into their hole when awkwardly deep inside. Useful on some snowblowers too. I think it's 3/8 ID hose.

    Does the heli coils last a long time

    • @kbssmallenginerepair2615
      @kbssmallenginerepair2615  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, typically they will last just as long as any other threaded part of the engine, as long as it is taken care of and not cross threaded or over torqued, obviously.
