  • On this week’s Throwback Thursday we’re taking at look at The Crow with a deep dive analysis to see what makes this film tick.
The question is, does this film still hold up after nearly 30 years? Let me know in the comments if you agree with my findings.

To remake this movie is beyond sacrilege. This movie still stands the test of time. The tragedy is that Brandon died while filming it. Sadly & ironically, he followed in his father's footsteps. Dying while filming his most famous movie in his career.

It absolutely does. The Crow is a masterpiece. Brandon's father was one of my heroes growing up, so I went into watching the movie in theaters with a heavy heart.
I was blown away at how good the movie was on its own accords. This is one of the all time best superhero films.

They don't make films like this anymore.
    RIP Brandon.
He would've been a massive star.

Seen this movie hundreds of times literally. Shared it with my son for the first time a couple weeks ago and he's obsessed with it now. Completely holds up to this day.

Another thing about the brief moment where Eric scratches Gabriel behind the ears, after the "window scene" is that unlike the first time he touches the cat and absorbs all of the painful traumatic memories from the cat's perspective, nothing happens the next time. This shows how he's able to absorb all the pain distilled in an object or person instantly, from a single initial contact. In a way, that foreshadows his ability to release "thirty hours of pain all at once, all for you" in that pivotal scene at the end.

The scene when only skank is left and erick is stocking him in that slow strobe light is my favorite scene of the movie.

A lot of the scenes mentioned were filmed after Brandon died. You can tell by how they never show his face.

Until now I didn't know about the deleted scene involving the Cowboy (?) individual explaining the crow...and just thought that the hand bandages were part of his outfit...

I bought the special edition of the excellent graphic novel only today after playing the mission on Cyberpunk 2077 named "Raymond Chandler Evening" I read that and instantly recalled what I thought was a poem from the comic. Turns out it's actually a song.
Though the movie isn't as brutal as the comic, nor does it feature alot of the downtime of Eric and his tortured visions and memories courtesy of the Skull Cowboy, it's equally as importanjt in how it helped me develop as a young teenager dealing with a familial death.

Im sorry for your loss, but I’m glad the comic was able to help you, it’s a favourite of mine also.

@@CriticalCinemaClub It's cool my friend, it was over thirty years ago now.
Wasn't just the comic and the film, it was also the music it introduced me to as well. I do wonder how differently my life may have gone if I'd not seen the movie, then bought the comic. It sounds hyperbolic, but I'm a musician, travelled the world and done all sorts, all down to discovering I liked stuff like Nine Inch Nails and Pantera lol

NIN are probably my favourite band, I don’t go to many gigs but I had to make an exception for them a few years back.
Who knows what direction life would have taken, you sound like a creative individual so I’m sure you would have found yourself down a similar path no matter what

Well I... I watched it on its theatrical release, 1998 or something... It's not something I usually do, but I walked out by the middle of the movie. Couldn't stand the clichés, I suppose. I did love the soundtrack, I actually bought the Cd the next day, and I still have it. Great music for not such a great movie.

    This is a great movie👏
Why are movies now so hollow and soul-less and missing any form of intelligence?!
I think we are all longing for great story telling and relatable characters?!🤔

    • @CriticalCinemaClub

My personal opinion is the reliance on CGI and special effects these days has made for a lot of lazy movies. Back then you still needed a good story and characters

Yes. Of course it does. What a stupid question.
