Heifetz was born for this piece. no one else captures the essence of this music like Jascha. i love at around 24:10, where the second time down the scale, he hangs on to the C-flat just a tiny bit to emphasize it, where everyone else just blasts through it. he is the master of timing and nuance, as well as hair-raising excitement.

It took me years to really appreciate Jascha Heifetz because of the age of the recordings. But, you are right, this is the definitive version of Max Bruch's Scottish Fantasy. I don't think another will ever compare. Heifetz makes his violin weep.

This, as you have now heard, is one of the most beautiful pieces of classical music I have ever heard. Jascha Heifetz is, to my mind, the only performance around, that does this piece justice. I especially like the first movement, the Adagio Cantabile. It is soul stirring.
Thank you for your comment. I am glad you found this piece. It will never cease to amaze me how often classical music is used in movies, however, I did not know this was the inspiration for some of the Star Trek movies.

Heifetz koud? Deze opname bewijst het tegendeel. In een woord: schitterend.

I had this album, yes, a vinyl album, in late 1960s. Played it on a Gerard record player with a Shure phone pickup, through a Heathkit tube amp on a pair of home made speakers. I have never heard the sound of this recording or other recordings so good again. Heifetz's playing of this music and the Vieuxtemps #5 has soul; not from human being.

The unique suffering sound of Heifetz comes from his using two strings A and A pure gut. It creates rough tone and more human feeling . It's much harder to play with gut strings, to produce clean tone and accurate intonation.

As a older child and teenager, this was my favorite classical recording. Heifetz's lush tone and playing is miraculous, and the balance with the orchestra is lovely and gives additional depth to the music, without ever overpowering the solo violin. Absolutely a masterpiece of the first order. Lovely playing at 9:30, and great orchestral counterpoint at 11:10 onward. Haven't seen the cat, yet, but still a great favorite.

Dragan Savic The following story has been told many times - it's true but I forget who the two individuals were were and I am not going to bother to try to research it. When Heifetz gave his first performance in Carnegie Hall, a violinist turned to a pianist and asked, "Isn't it awfully hot in this room". The pianist replied, "It's not too hot in here for pianists."

    • @siuhhonkeung

I read that story. The violinist was Mischa Elman, the pianist was Paderewski. Elman was also a student of Auer, same as Heifetz. Elman was older than Heifetz.

Max Bruch is my all time favourite classical composer. You are quite correct, he is the ultimate melody maker and Jascha Heifetz in all his brilliance reduces one to tears with his performance, especially of the first movement.
It's like Gary Moore, Jeff Beck and some other blues guitarists, who are able to make the pain within the human heart quite audible...so it is with Jascha Heifetz, who accomplishes the same effect with this concerto using his violin.

At 20:32 he's the only person who comes in there at that time... maybe he memorized it wrong? In the music the orchestra gets a solo first, then the soloist comes in.

This is a brilliant performance but why on earth do we need to suffer the intervention of adverts! The ads don't even wait for a pausa or fermata - at least the kitten finale doesn't detract - it's just fun - relax. Thanks for posting!

      Thank you. (^_^)
I don't know why TH-cam has taken to putting adverts into full length concertos and symphonies. It is annoying, I will say.
      Thank you for your comment.
      Kind regards.
      Liz.

I don't know why but it seems to me Heifetz sounds much, much more soulful and throaty than others. Is it bc of his Guarneri?

its not the fiddle, its the fingers
actually, its not even mainly the fingers
the sound is created by the bow and the hand guiding it

Don’t think it’s solely his instrument but his bowing that provides the phrasing & vibrato of course !!!!

Ji Eun Kim it was a combination of many things. His fiery temperament as a violinist. His bow technique - he used a tremendous amount of speed and left his bow hair very loose. Also his set of strings - metal e, plain gut a+d and wound silver g. These kind of strings would be unimaginable to a violinist today which makes it all the more incredible he made the sound he did on them.

    Hallo again,
I'm afraid you've got me listening to this concerto today.
I dont think it is strange that you have listened to it 6 times. I am prone to doing that kind of thing myself when I discover and like a piece. It is especially true with me of Classical Music. I have 5 of the most beautiful clasical concertos uploaded to my channel, however, Universal Music Group have blocked them almost worldwide. They were my 5 highest viewed videos too. I wish you could hear them.

    Hi there,
I haven't a clue where in this piece you might find the part featured in Star Trek. However, it was sedimaster who told me about it, so perhaps he will be able to tell you if you would PM him and ask him. His comment is further back in this comment section.
    Thank you for your comment.
I hope you get to find out where it is.

Strange I have played violin for a long time and have never heard of this then after watching Star Trek the Next generation and the episode The Inner Light I find that this is the inspiration for the flute music in that episode

The New Symphony Orchestra of London,.. was that actually the London Symphony?

    • @Afrikitty
      @Afrikitty  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I did a bit of sleuthing on that for you, and it seems as though it was first called the New London Symphony and is now simply called the London symphony. I hope that helps. (^_^)

    Hallo yingdat,
I apologise for that mistake. I never noticed what I had written. I have changed the title of this video to correctly reflect that this is ONLY the Scottish Fantasy, a Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 46, NOT Bruch's Violin Concerto No 1, in G-minor, Op 26. There is no space left in the title bar for me to add the key of E-Flat Major
I do have Bruch's Violin Concerto No 1 in G Minor, Op 26 listed on my channel. Please watch?v=XuNNdHkNtso
Thank you for pointing that out.

Anyone know where the part played in Star Trek is? I've listened to this forwards and backwards (Okay, maybe not backwards), and I haven't been able to find it. Just curious about it really.

I wore out my LP of this back in the 60s, playing over and over. I don't like Heifetz for all major works, but there is no question he owned this piece. I wonder if he met Bruch when he was young? My 2nd favorite Bruch work is the Konzerstueck, as played by Accardo: th-cam.com/video/pXogvUvXkc0/w-d-xo.html

Funny you should mention that. I have another video featuring those cats at the end and all the whiners are over there giving me a hard time - even Mr Shlomo Mintz himself, if you want to believe that. I had to launch into a tirade over there and throw the Riot Act at them. LOL
Thank you for your comment. It made my day. (*_*)

Afrikitty Obviously, nobody has a right to threaten you, but it did spoil the ending of a piece a little bit. Even if you can't get that hushed silence and stillness of musicians right after a piece has finished, this really breaks the mood. In any case, thank you for your upload!
