    The best tip I have learned is to stretch only the ribbing when attaching and not the fabric. Love this topic and look forward to the rest of the series! I'm sure I'll learn something new and helpful.

    Hello Tiffany. I hope your Disney vacation was wonderful but bet HOT too. But such wonderful memories! I loved your tutorial on knit necklines too. I haven’t sewn much of them in the past few years but I’ve been frustrated too when I attempted it. Redone one several times and almost quit,, (this was a year ago or so)But I tried it again with a while new top that needed the knit neckline,,, and it came out better,,, not perfect but good enough. Take care and happy sewing n resting too after your trip. It’s exciting to go but home is best! I’ll be e xcited for a neckband tutorial asap! For now, Nancy from Fort Wayne.

    My best tip is to hand baste the neckband so the two layers stay together. Have to do it loosely so that the band can stretch, but it really helps me.

    Despite having a fair amount of sewing experience, my way of coping with knit neckbands is by avoiding them - maybe now I'll be encouraged to try to do it - thanks for this video and for sharing your experiences! You are so right that knit fabrics all have very different characteristics, too.

    I like using a rib knit I buy from my fabric warehouse SR Harris. It is similar to cuffing found on ready to wear. Minerva also has some I have ordered. On cotton knit I use .85 of the diameter. But I only use cotton Lycra that has at least 5 percent Lycra. Joann’s is usually only 2 percent. I also like to order matching ribbing for fabric like French terry. I like a 1.5 inch neckband. Great subject Tiffany!

    Neck bands are something I struggled with for the longest!! I seriously used to line my tops just so I didn’t have to do a neck band!
    I love the staycation dress but the one think I don’t like is the neck band. I made like 2 of them before I figured out what was wrong with it. It’s stiff a favorite though!
    And I totally agree with you hobby lobby ribbed knit is so good!!

    Sometimes I serge the folded neckband on cotton knits or anything that curls before attaching to the garment. It really helps stop the curling as you attach it. Makes a double line around the neck if you finish with serging but it really does help.

    Useful l tips Tiffany. I nearly always baste the neckband on - by hand or with a very long sewing machine stitch. It helps me to check that the neckband is the right length before the final sew… this is after having got it wrong several times and ended up stretching out the neck having to do the neckband again! 😳

    Hi, Tiffany! You already taught me something new with this video! I tried to measure the neckline for my recent staycation because the fabric I was using wasn’t very stretchy. I didn’t know how to do it so I measured the necklines on the pattern pieces 😅. I see that I was going about it the wrong way. Do you know what pattern you’ll end up using in the video series to show us the neckline? I’d love to prep the same pattern and try it along with you. Other things I struggle with are FBA in knits…it totally makes sense in wovens and I love me a good dart but I don’t want a dart in my knits. I was just going to ask your advice on that. For my staycation, even though I added length to the bodice, my bust makes my front waistline pull up and I just don’t like that. Oh and gathering knits, on a serger, with elastic or the old fashioned way. It took me 1.5 entire days to make the staycation because of all that gathering. Even with Diana’s tips I still struggled. Thank you for all the help!

    Hi Tiffany! Great video, I love this series! 💕 Your first video made me confident enough to even try sewing with knits.
    I do have a question: I know it’s good to reinforce the shoulder seam, but do you have to reinforce like the waist or side seams for heavier or slinkier dress? When do you reinforce knit seams? 😬
    (Edited to correct sleeve to seam)

    • @hoosierhandmade22
      @hoosierhandmade22  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello! Thank you so much for watching! Aw, I’m so glad my knit series has been some encouragement to you along your knit sewing journey!
      Great question about reinforcing seams! I’ve found that I do like to reinforce the skirt seam of my longer dresses. I usually do that reinforcing at the seam where the bodice meets the first layer of skirt. It assists with the weight of the skirt not dragging the bodice down and out of shape. I’ve found it’s especially beneficial for a little bit heavier knit fabrics like double brushed poly.
      Hope that helps a little! Thanks for chatting with me and for the great question! Happy Sewing ❤️~Tiffany

    Tiffany - do the principals of applying a neckband also work for a cuff? I made the Sinclair cardigan and used self-fabric to make the cuff and it was a disaster. It's sitting in a pile because I just don't know how to fix it.

    • @hoosierhandmade22
      @hoosierhandmade22  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello, Sharon! Thank you so much for watching!
      Great question about cuffs, Sharon! In most cases, yes, the same principles apply except that I usually use the pattern piece for cuffs from the patterns. I haven’t tried measuring and creating a cuff length for myself.
      I do use ribbing again for cuffs and quarter the sleeve and cuff the same way I do the neckline. For me, I like a bit of “snugness” in my cuffs so I want my cuff piece to be slightly smaller than the sleeve. This will allow for the cuff to cinch in the sleeve a bit at my wrists.
      Hope you can revisit your project soon, Sharon! Thanks for the great questions! Happy Sewing ❤️~Tiffany

    Tiffany, I have a knit fabric question. Do you prewash your knit fabric? If so, do you lay it flat to dry or toss in the dryer?

    • @hoosierhandmade22
      @hoosierhandmade22  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, Carol! This is a great question! Yes, I prewash all my fabric, knit and woven, in a cold water wash. I always use a color catcher sheet, I believe the brand is Shout. Then I do dry them all in the dryer. If I had my new clothes line, I would hang dry the woven but I found that my knit fabrics distorted somewhat on the line at my old home. For my finished makes, I always hang dry my clothes, even if I’ve already used the dryer on the fabric yardage.
      So long story short🙈, yes, I prewash and I just use my dryer to dry the yardage.
      You might discover some shrinkage of your woven fabrics in the dryer but the knit fabrics usually do not shrink much, in my experience.
      Thanks for the question, Carol, hope you’re doing well 🥰 Happy Sewing ❤️~Tiffany
