The fact that he became so well paid because he just tried to avoid writing the character is hilarious to me. I just imagine his shock at the numbers people were willing to pay for material and legend says it can extend your life by five minutes.

I recently read The Devil And The Dark Water, fantastic period crime novel in the vein of Sherlock Holmes but with a much darker grittier feel. Worth a read.

I can't resist beginning by saying that when Jinzee publishes a new video, you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to deduce that it's going to be excellent! :) Famous and beloved characters often have an interesting backstory, usually relating to the author behind the character, and Sherlock Holmes is of course no exception. Another example would be Perry Mason, created by Erle Stanley Gardner, who before becoming a full-time writer was himself a lawyer who was known to occasionally employ unorthodox tactics both in and out of the courtroom. But the Doyle/Holmes tale is much more complicated and interesting. I knew a little about Doyle prior to this video, but you provided a very complete factual background as well as the usual brilliant analysis of those facts. The tie-ins to other detective characters was something I didn't know about at all, and that was fascinating to learn. With the facts and analysis complemented by another set of amazing skits, brilliant as always in both writing and acting, it all made for another great video experience that is uniquely Jinzee! Thanks for once again increasing our knowledge in your own very entertaining way!

It can't be overstated that coming from an upper class family in the largest empire in the wolrd, and publishing for a class of wealthy nobles throughout said empire, who could subsequently afford to mass publish those works in a profitable way for the midling class-- that can really help the reach of your writing.

I finally caught up on your videos! \o/ I'm loving the new direction and new content. The skits are hilarious! I was really into Sherlock Holmes as a kid but have kinda stopped following new stuff once I'd gotten through the original stories. It kinda feels like Doyle's heart wasn't really in it after he brought him back.
How dare Artur Conan Doyle kill off a book character I like?! This is way worse than his defense of concentration camps during the Boer War!!!

Doyle seemed like an intelligent man. But he had a sacred cow which was spiritualism, that his intelligence did not allow him to really investigate critically and he so wanted it to be true. All the ingredients for classic textbook confirmation bias were present and then it was game over at that point. Doyle would look for information that would confirm spiritualism but ignore information that would disconfirm it.

I've first heard a radio play of The Hound of the Baskervilles. I loved it. Then I read the book. I loved it still. II got a DVD of a Soviet adaptation of Study in Scarlet and The Speckled Band. I loved them too. A few years later, BBC's Sherlock came around. I loved it (except for the disappointing Hounds of Baskerville)...until the weird 3rd season and atrocious 4th one. Now I'm binge-watching the Granada series. After being disappointed with their version of The Hound of Baskervilles, I'm trying the Basil Rathbone version. It's not that accurate, but it can pass. However, Arthur Wontner WAS the living illustration of Holmes. Too bad they didn't bother with period appropriate costumes, hair and all.
And now...when the algorithm recommends me a video that is just a day old...that tells me I need to stop being obsessed about finding the *perfect* Hound of the Baskervilles, when I'm happy to have the *perfect* Holmes. Thank you, Jeremy Brett.
As of now, my new found respect & love goes to Moriarty instead with the newly recent anime Moriarty The Patriot. It's quite interesting "Sherlock Holmes" verse anime that tells the story mainly from the POVs of William James Moriarty, instead of the typical detective protag like Sherlock.
