      Sad though this is there was so much more to the execution of Louis Seize and Marie Antoinette
      If you don't like readied dull and heavy history books try Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities, or more
      recently Hillary Mantel's A Place of Greater Safety
      The plight of Tsar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra was almost a carbon copy of Louis and Marie, they too being deposed and arrested in 1917 Russia. The only difference was that when it came to their execution, they were both shot together with all their children and a few close aides
      Thereby assuring that there were no descendents left alive who could come back years later down the line to reclaim the throne.

      @@marieann3395 He was placed under the guardianship of Antoine Simon, who beat him and made him sing revolutionary songs and forced by Jacques Hebert to accuse his own mother of incest at her trial. Antoine Simon was executed during the Terror in 1794. Conditions for the boy seemed about to improve after the Fall of Robespierre. He was visited by the head of the Directory, Paul Barras, but soon died.

    Marie Antoinette also needed to use the bathroom and pleaded with the guards that were taking her to the guillotine to let her go so she didn't wet herself on the guillotine. They did let her go beside a barn I think and she got Back in the cart to go to her death. Madame touseau was actually made to make a death sculpture of the heads of Many under the threat that she would meet the same fate if she refused. I took 3 years of French in highschool and did a report for French class in French about the Frenchman credited with being the master of the revolution who in the end ended up on the guillotine himself. The king and Queen actually spent alot of France's Money helping us during the Revolutionary war with England and this was one main reason why they both were accused of treason to France (a excuse of course) and no Marie Antoinette never ever said Let them Eat Cake.

      Someone planted trees at the site. Also, someone who met her recognised clothes that she had been wearing when he saw her at Versailles. There are surviving strands of her hair so maybe they could DNA test and see if its a match. It is a match with the reported heart of her son that was passed around for centuries.

    This is the first time I have ever heard something positive about Marie Antoinette. I have always heard the "let them eat cake" quote. It reminded me of this: "Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy."

    • @EvelynEdwards
      @EvelynEdwards  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Did you know she never said “let them eat cake”? As in never. Didn’t happen. That story began circulating 100 years before Marie Antoinette was ever born. More incorrect things are said about her than almost any female in history.

      She was involved in her husbands political decisions, like firing reforming ministers like Turgot. She was not just a consort. And she spent lavishly while the people were hungry. During the Revolution she was very involved in trying to undermine it. In 1789 she offered Mirabeau a bribe and he turned it down.

    The levels to which the prosecution sank were disgusting. She was accused of incest with her own son. He was taken from her and kept in the company of tge coarse prison guards who found fun in making him drunk and teaching him foul language.
    On passing the guards room one day she heard her son roaring drunk saying " havent they killed that whore yet?!!"
    He disappeared after her death and faded from history.

    Maybe a tragic end to life. But it had been coming to the royal family after decades of much worse cruelty to the people of their country while they sat in their palaces.

    • @EvelynEdwards
      @EvelynEdwards  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Let’s break this comment down- when you say the royal family do you mean the French royal family? She was not part of that dynasty of spending. She was a teenager who barely spoke the language that was brought to France to marry another teenager that was socially awkward and woefully inadequate to rule. The Bourbons had been overspending for generations. That’s not Marie Antoinette’s fault. And if you think she had absolutely any say in anything to do with any policy I’d highly recommend reading her biography by Antonia Fraser.
