Saint Chapelle, definitely in Paris, but France? Not just a building but a collection that makes up a whole. Le Mont Saint-Michel. So other worldly to me.
I saw the Sainte Chapelle 56 years ago, and I still distinctly remember emerging from that narrow spiral staircase into the sublime radiance above. It was awe-inspiring, it was wondrous, it was -- well, unforgettable. Thank you, Manuel! You researched this building of marvels much more deeply than I did, and, with your help, I can now re-live and expand upon my impression of that day long ago.
I was a fifteen year old girl on a school trip from Cornwall, more interested in boys than architecture of any kind when we were taken to Sainte La Chapelle. I was stunned by its beauty, by the colours and the light everywhere I looked. I never believed that could ever be captured on film, but you have come as close to perfect as anyone ever could. Well done and thank you for the pleasure it gives me to watch it again and again.
Same wordsmith! 25 years ago and I was just saying the same to a friend only a few weeks ago. That glass! I’m amazed you were able to catch that sense of awe & wrap around kaleidoscopic light Manuel, merci & bravo.
So true. The first time I went, it was late afternoon--we were getting ready to leave and a docent told us to wait a few minutes. "Have a seat over there..." A few minutes later, the lights were turned off and the windows lit up. Before, I thought the building was amazing... I had no words when the lights were off. it was stunning.
I would give this comment a thousand up votes if I could. It's the most magical spot in Paris...and I'm atheist! You would have to be without sight to not be moved by its beauty.
My favourite church in Paris. The most wonderful stained glass I have ever seen and I have seen Notre Dame, Chartres and St Peter’s. A hidden gem. I never go to Paris without going here.
Amazing to see the ancient stained glass looking so brilliant. It was removed and placed into safe storage during WW2, and its restoration was only completed in 2015. Photographing each wall in perfect lighting conditions was a triumph in itself.
I haven’t been able to find anything about the stained glass being removed and placed into safe storage during WW2. What I _did_ find was that the restoration took place over a seven-year period ending in 2015 to coincide with the 800th anniversary of the birth of King Louis IX, who commissioned the chapel. According to _Forbes,_ “…over 6,000 square feet of stained glass were removed, piece by piece, and analyzed with the precision of laser technology in order to determine the best way to remove what is known as ‘Paris Crust.’” No wonder the stained glass looks so dazzlingly luminescent!
Yes, the lower chapel is a gem on its own. It’s good the tour starts there, because it sets the bar so high, and then when you go upstairs, you’re absolutely blown away.
La Sainte Chapelle is the most breath taking gothic building I have ever seen. The medieval description that you quoted near the end is spot on IMO. What a beautiful, informative video. Thank you!
Not knowing what to expect when I climbed the stairs to the upper chapel, I turned the corner to see all that stained glass and I completely burst into tears. It was by far the most beautiful sight I had ever seen. It was an absolutely sacred experience. I will never forget that moment. It remains my favorite building and most memorable visual experiences from my first trip to Paris. Merci beaucoup pour cette belle vidéo. ⚜
I visited Sainte Chapelle when I was young and it is still one of the most memorable buildings I have visited. When you emerge from the staircase and all around you the stained glass the windows let in the light. It is incredible.
Twice I've had my breath literally taken away by a place: when I first saw the Grand Canyon, and when I saw the stained glass in the upper floor of Sainte Chapelle. In both cases, video only gives you a taste; you must BE there. Royalty really did save the best for themselves.
Guess ill have to go to grand canyon then ! Even if it will be hard as i live so far. Im parisien And have visited la saint chapelle many Times, And it still amazes me.
When I was a child I said it was like being inside a paperweight- one of the antique ones with rich colors. As many have mentioned, it is a jewel box. Breathtaking. Lovely film. Thank you!
I've been to Paris many times over the years but didn't know about this - beautiful & fascinating! I hope to be in Paris this Autumn and will definitely see - Thanks!
Manuel does these sorts of videos better than anyone. Well researched, lots of detail, but not so much as to bog it down. Well written and even better spoken. Excellent photography and a great use of models. I love his work. I've watched them all and am always impatient for the next one. And this didn't disappoint. Bravo: Manuel Bravo!
Manuel Bravo you are a brilliant presenter full of enthusiasm and excellent communication skills. It's a dream for me to get a quality tour of this beautiful chapel that I've been to twice. Thank you so much! You are contributing to world culture. Keep up the good work. Subscribed. ❤
Wonderful video, as always. When inside, with the morning light streaming through the exquisite colored panels of glass, it is breathtaking to behold. Such a treasure, but not seen by the sheer numbers of tourists as Notre Dame, but maybe the fire changed that.
I've been enthralled by 2 visits to this wonder and learned so much by Manuel's video! Your stuff is terrific, thanks for the great work. So many people miss this gem when visiting Paris; it is simply sublime.
I attended a concert there at sunset and got chills and almost cried everything was so overwhelmingly beautiful. I thought too, "this is what Heaven will be like."
I so enjoy your info about Saint Chappelle. We’ve been to Paris several times but never visited this church. Next time we surely will. Thank you Manuel!
We first visited France in 1989, and went to Sainte-Chapelle three times. We returned on two subsequent visits in 2002 and 2017. As others say, coming up through the spiral staircase into the upper chamber is to feel a bit light-headedly paradisal. I saw someone complain about the cost of the entrance fee (then: 10 Euros in 2017), and figured they just preferred to go the movies instead.
I just discovered your channel through your video on Rome, and immediately subscribed! I visited Rome for the first time two months ago. I'd never been to Italy before, and only once to Europe, briefly. I was flabergasted by Rome. So much history and beauty everywhere. I spent four days walking throughout the city, taking in so many of the sites. Your video was so excellently made, and taught me so much I didn't know, even after having been there. Last year I did a quick whirlwind through northern Europe. A last minute decision, as I was visiting Morocco for six weeks. I realized how close to Europe I was, so I took 10 days to hop over to Europe to visit some old friends I hadn't seen in over 35 years! On the way to Germany I had an 18 hour stopover in Paris. I did some research and decided that the place I most wanted to see was Sainte Chapelle. Crossing the Seine I could see Notre Dame under construction still. I stopped by, but only viewed it from the outside. I headed over to Sainte Chapelle, and to my great disappointment it was closed even though it was during normal visiting hours. A guard gave me a reason which I don't remember anymore. It had been open a few hours before, and would reopen again the next day. Unfortunately, that was my only time to see it. So I missed out! Thank you for gifting us this wonderful historical tour of Sainte Chapelle. Hopefully I can return one day to see it in person. Not being able to did have a positive effect, however. It offered me more time to visit the Eiffel Tower which I went up into, something I never imagined I'd have the opportunity to do.
I was there In 2013 and was awed by the beautiful stained glass. It was magical. The day we were there there was a concert ..Vivaldis four seasons. It was simply beautiful.
Sainte Chapelle is a piece of art, the heart of French flamboyant Gothic, all in finesse and elevation, it is a chapel which seems to rise into the heavens, it carries you away as soon as you enter, it is a moment of French and Western history....unparalleled beauty.
La Sainte Chappelle is the most beautiful and sublime Gothic church ever built! When you enter into the chapel, it is like entering into the waiting room of Heaven! Absolutely spectacular!
I agree, the way the light filters through those stunning stained glass windows really does create a heavenly atmosphere. What specific aspects of the chapel stood out to you the most?
In 1980 I visitied this chapel as a young student, and there happend to be a classical concert with the then famous trumpet player André Bernard and orchestra. All this absolutly breathtaking surroundings and the fantastic music did engrave in my memory for ever. I do hope to visit this wonder of human architecture and craftmanship some day again. For me Saint Chapelle is much more impressive as Notre Dame...
Excellent . Well Done . I love Sainte Chapelle . Ivisited many years back. What is the best way to visit today, how do we obtain tickets and what is the cost?
Thanks for taking so much better shots, because when I was in there I could only see these stained glass in a much much smaller form just because of the sheer height.
I have really enjoyed your videos. Kudos. Sainte Chapelle stunned me. (in a good way)😇 Maybe the Pantheon in Rome had a similar impact. (your video on that was also impressive)
I was lucky to attend a chamber orchestra concert here in 2016. It’s a stunning building and experience. My only regret is that this is not a working church. Attending a Mass here would be spectacular.
Anyone who hasn't had the chance to penetrate the upper level of the Sainte Chapelle doesn't know what an aesthetic shock is. It is simply beyond words. I don't see which other monument in the world could match that.
The peasants chapel under the benefactors cathedral is inspirational. The cathedral was being remodeled during my visit. So I can only image the inspiration peasants experienced as the walk through through the chapel doors leaving the the sewage filled streets of Paris in the 1500’s.
I visited the Sainte-Chapelle some years ago. Built between 1242 and 1248 during the reign of Louis IX or St. Louis King of France (1226-1270). It was said he attended Mass daily at the Chapel and there's a specific chair where he would sit. The stained glass windows survived the French Revolution in the late 1700s.
What's your favorite building in France?
Catedral St Denise
Saint Chapelle, definitely in Paris, but France? Not just a building but a collection that makes up a whole. Le Mont Saint-Michel. So other worldly to me.
The La Hague nuclear fuel processing plant. Nothing against nice architecture, I just hate greens.
The Sainte Chapelle. When I first walked up the stairs into the upper chapel- it took my breath away.
In person Sainte Chapelle is an overwhelming, gloriously breathtaking space.
It just may be one of the most luminous, ethereal places on earth.
I saw the Sainte Chapelle 56 years ago, and I still distinctly remember emerging from that narrow spiral staircase into the sublime radiance above. I saw this beautiful church in 1965. I still clearly remember its beauty. I hope to see it again next spring.
My experience was just like yours!
Same experience in 1960. Still remember exiting the stairs and the awe.
The most... beautiful... magical... stunning... wonderful... umbelievable... building in Paris.
So true. The first time I went, it was late afternoon--we were getting ready to leave and a docent told us to wait a few minutes. "Have a seat over there..." I Agree. A spectacular display of light.
The glass in Sainte Chapelle is so breathtaking in person. Hands down, it is my favorite gothic building.
Amazing to see the ancient stained glass looking so brilliant. It was removed and placed into safe storage during WW2, and its restoration was only completed in 2015. Photographing each wall in perfect lighting conditions was a triumph in itself.

I was wondering about that. Seems like it’s a miracle this place as well as a number of other historical gems are still standing.
when emerging in the upper Chapel, a lot of people have instantly tears in the eyes !
I saw Mozart's Requiem in the basement by a chamber orchestra and choir. Utterly magical.
I'm so jealous.
Yes, the lower chapel is a gem on its own. It’s good the tour starts there, because it sets the bar so high, and then when you go upstairs, you’re absolutely blown away.

I visited Sainte Chappelle but your narrative enriches the experience, thank you.
We visited a few days ago and emerged to snow flakes falling over Paris…a truely magical day 🥰

Just an exceptional video. Thanks for this one, Manuel. This chapel is on my bucket list for sure.

Excellent! Thanks for posting. San Chappelle is one of the most beautiful places on earth
Staggeringly gorgeous and moving. When I was there I never wanted to leave.

Beautiful and informative video Manuel. Well done on the forms of Gothic art. Bravo all round!
Being in Sainte Chapelle is like being in Heaven.
Have you been in heaven?
@@lalero88 it must be the same sensation. P.S What a poor response! Maybe you don't have a real connection with Art.
