    Sounds like "dans" translates better as "I will leave for the office within 20 minutes." or "I am inside the house.", "The cat is inside the box." --Beginner French

    In this case, Spanish is easier than English and French
    English: in, on, at
    French: en, dans, à, chez
    Spanish: en

    I love the complexity that the French language has. In my opinion it is one of the more innovative languages from the Romance family. From the ne.. pas..., to the specific nuances of dans/en or the partitive articles, liaisons, elisions. The unique Pronouns Y and En that have no immediate parallels in other Romance languages to my knowledge.

    This work is so helpful. I think that if people keep recording language lessons like this, setting an access to it available for beginners across the globe,it'll ever bring miraclous results, you know.. At least that's what i believe. She's also a good english accent, and speaks slowly as all decent teachers should do, so that people can learn in a easier way. It's even better when we have to study both two languages spoken here. Then, thanks.

    I know you're not a fan of saying French has a present participle (-ing form in English), Alexa, but everything I read in French uses "en -ant." For example, my dictionary has the following example listed under "en":
    _En _*_faisant_*_ un effort_
    _By _*_making_*_ an effort_
    Continuing your statement about _en_ sometimes translating to _by_ in English, it's commonly written to modify a participle.

    • @annmarietornabene
      @annmarietornabene 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think in this case the "en" is while...en courrant - while running..another use for en.

    • @mik4k6
      @mik4k6 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's why I mentioned it here. However, the "-ant" form of verbs is used all over the place without the "en" in front - from _Alice Détective_ (1970's translations of _Nancy Drew_ in French) to current monthly journals. It's listed at the top of every verb listing in _501 French Verbs,_ as well.

For those who speak Spanish this is actually easy, cause we have to think only our Spanish equivalent "dentro de" and then we'll see the difference between them. Bonjour Alexa! Many thanks for this video, it has helped clear up a lot of my confusion about ‘en’ and ‘dans’. I have a question though. In a previous video (DEPUIS or PENDANT? How to say SINCE and FOR in French), you used the sentence “Hélène habite à Paris depuis 2005.” I’m wondering, would it be correct to say “Hélène habite EN Paris depuis 2005.”? If not, could you please explain why “à” is required in that sentence? Merci beaucoup!

    • @learnfrenchwithalexa

    Im a little confused with "dans l'office" / "en office" ... the meanings seemed to me pretty similar

  • @sylviangolet3726
    @sylviangolet3726 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you can substitute the word "inside" or "within" for "in'" then you can use the word "dans". Le chat est dans la boite. The cat is inside the box. Je vais au bureau dans cinq minutes. I am going to the office within five minutes. What would be the difference between "Je suis en classe" and "Je suis dans la classe"?

    • @learnfrenchwithalexa
      @learnfrenchwithalexa  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Je suis dans la classe"? is the physical position. You are inside the classroom. But 'en classe' you are busy being in the process of learning. So more like 'I doing a class'.

    Second question, you said that en is also use for living in specific location, j'habite en banlieue, and you also gave the example for Dans, j'habite Dans une banlieue tranquille , both are the same why??????

    • @abbaspushtoon4224

    Merci pour ce lecon Alexa. I have been struggling with the word IN for a long time, Now I know that EN is used when you want to say things like, in time, or in transit, or in love. Whereas DANS is used when you are talking about actually INSIDE something, like an airplane or a shop, or in your house. Have I got this right?

    Just one question, why is "je vais aur bureau dans 20 minutes" = I "will go" to the office in 20 minutes, shouldn't it be "j'irai"?

    • @sandwich2761
      @sandwich2761 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No because the fact that it indicates the future is already implied by the "in 20 minutes" so you don't need to conjugate the verb for the future. Also another thing is that other european languages tend not to use the future tense as much as we do in english as they can just use time to tell you its in the future. It might be a bit confusing but don't always try to equivocate everything to how english works,you just have to learn how they do it.
