One of the reason is that this aircraft is too tailored for BOAC's Empire routes which sometimes or oftenly involves flights in and out of African cities at the time since the airports there are hot and high terrain with mostly inadequate runway length for the airline's already serving fleet of B707, which render it useless. Consequentially due to its high powered engines, the aircraft consumed more fuels than the 707 despite of its lower operating costs which left BOAC as well as its successor British Airways running more 707s than VC10, so many, before the BOAC-BEA merger, the airline had more than 40-50 B707s in the fleet
The differences between the Super VC10 and Standard VC10 is that it can fly further and faster than the Standard VC10, and to differ it visually, you can see the port forward entry door of either variants, the Standard has 2 while the Super have only 1.
I really like the VC10, there's one at IWM Duxford, which I live right next to, and it's so cool to be able to go inside of it and look around the outside of it. Very nice plane, I'd love to see it fly again one day

I worked on Super VC10s as cabin crew. It was the most beautiful piece of sculpture to fly. Ever.
It's such a beautiful aircraft, I'm really sad that the RAF didn't use their fleet to replace the cancelled Nimrods.
I got an idea, Have u ever heard of simple planes, Well, if u didnt u should try it, its on steam. its not free tho, but its like a simulator where u can build planes and a lot of other things that can work. Hope this is helpful.

The plane looks almost like the il-62
The plane failed because it was specifically built for empire routes; hot and high strips with shorter runways. It was very thirsty compared to the 707, however it was extremely fast.
In other words, it did exactly what it was intended to do. What wrecked its chances was that the design requirement only suited one airline (and even then, not all routes). Commercially, it was sunk before it got off the drawing board.

Clearly Swiss doesn't want to show the UK aerospace industry the same respect as the UK give the world the First Jetliner the Comet, but also the first turboprop airliner in the Vickers Viscount and the World's first Tri-jet in the Hawker-Siddeley Trident which pioneered the technology that became the ILS and the Bristol Brabazon the world first widebody airliner
The VC-10 had many military models such as the VC-10 C.1 that served as a Cargo, Medical Evacuation and VIP Transport
VC-10 C.1K was a Tanker-Transport conversion of the VC-10 C.1 and the VC-10 K.2,
VC-10 K.3, and VC-10 K.4 Tankers.
But there were more ideas planned as there was a plans to make the VC-10 into these
1. The VC-10 Poffier a ALBM carrier which could've carried up to 8 AGM-48A Skybolt,
2. The VC-10 AEW an AWACS Platform.
3. The VC-10 K.1 and VC-10 K.3A a pair of unbuilt tankers
4. The VC-10 MR.2, VC-10 MRA.3 a pair of unbuilt Maritime Patrol Aircraft
5. The VC-10R a Signals Intelligence Reconnaissance Platform

Actually, the VC10 didn’t gain as much popularity for similar reasons as to the MD-11; both were essentially, as one journalist for the MD-11 puts it, “classically ill-timed.” The VC10 was unfortunately released (after its maiden flight) during a time where the British Empire started losing territory across the world, thus negating the need for an aircraft that can handle ill-equipped airports (for the time). As for the MD-11, well, that’s due to more lenient ETOPS regulations just right after the MD-11 entered service.
The jet was top notch for its stated mission. It wasn't too late onto the market. See Raden K723AK comments below. As stated, the 707 was cheaper on standard routes but unable to fly the hot and high "empire routes" in Africa. British Airways (then BOAC) who set the performance specs decided to go with the slower, less advanced and cheaper 707 for everything else. The jet did exactly what the buyer said they wanted until they changed their mind. Smooth flying, quiet and superb short field performance, but a bit more expensive on the long vanilla routes. I enjoyed three flights on it and was welcomed into the cockpit on one. Loved it!

It was designed to meet the requirements of BOAC's routes to the Commonwealth with its short runways. Then BOAC decided it didn't suit them after all and bought the 707 instead.

Boeing didn't have a decent jet that couldn't work in really hot countries ie Africa and Australia and Singapore, that is why BOAC asked Vickers to produce a jet that could do just this, so stop knocking Great Britain and our beautiful iconic VC10
Problem with this and the HS Trident was that the British government forced Vickers, Hawker-Siddely etc to follow exact specifications of BOAC and BEA, which meant that aircraft were essentially tailored to the wants of the airlines, so nobody else wanted them.
Personally I love the design of the bickers VC-10 and though it was beautiful. I had the opportunity to see a fast taxi in the uk of a Tanker version.

Its better technically and even in looks but as you pointed out poor marketing strategy and timing with its launch.I think having more seats on board would have made it a strong contender to the 707 .It was the version of Rolls Royce car in the air, made for luxurious and comfortable flying experience.It was faster too still holding the best time record across the Atlantic apart from the Concorde.
