    Hello! So I am 68 years old (young at heart). Begining in the early 70's I began collecting crochet and craft patterns from magazines. I cut them out and stapled together. I continued this for a long time! I still have them but haven't actually seen them for many years as they are in storage. I will have to get rid of them but don't want to throw them away!!!
    I can read the older patterns.
    Thank you for sharing! I love the books and patterns that you share!❤️

      Hi 👋 Thank you for watching! 🙏💗 Oh, I bet you have some truly wonderful patterns stored away! 😃 What a wonderful resource to have! I hope you get to use them one day! 🤞Could you possibly donate them to a local crafting group in your area? That way, they will still get some use, and you won't have to throw them away 🤗💗

    I like that calendar box, I think i'm going to start going to thrift stores and salvation army to check for crochet stuff. It breaks my heart when I see the blankets that someone had taken time to crochet ending up in thrift stores.

      That calendar is probably one of my favourite finds! 😃 Such a great bargain! I would definitely recommend checking thrift stores for crochet things! You can find some truly amazing stuff out there 😊
      Being able to salvage someone else's work and either cherish it for yourself or make a few changes to an item and then re-donate it to send it back out into the universe is just great 😃

    My grandma taught me to crochet and I so wish I had any patterns she used! She was born in 1897 and live until 1992 (she was 95) so you can imagine the patterns she probably had. She would love all these great new yarns. :) I'd love to get my hands on those shawl patterns from Villawool! Huge shawls are the best!

    The edgingbook , I have several, I use them with 8 ply on blankets, jumper bottoms basically anything, even bags. You can thread beads on to your yarn before starting and decide where to place them in the vintage edging. So many possibilities have fun.

    I thought I would google this hall and found that you are only in Ballarat..I think during the next school holidays ( or prior) research some country Op shops to take a drive to and spend some money in..I'm just up the road from you, western subs of Melbourne, so it would be a lovely drive to take one day..and yes, I'm a crocheter and can't help myself with yarn in Op shops...it's where most of my stash (lets keep it real, HOARD) comes from..
    there is an American crocheter, her name is Corinna, she has a channel where she crochets vintage patterns from the 1800's through to the 1980's..Just Vintage Crochet..
    the granny squares..there's enough to make a rectangular box there..line the inside with some scrap material to help it stand, maybe some mesh between the squares and lining to help it stand...
    and having only watched one vid I have subscribed..I like to support Aussie TH-camrs, because if I don't you might disappear..often I wait to see if you have grabbed me for more than a few vids before I subscribe..

      Hi there 👋 thank you so much for subscribing! It's very much appreciated 🙏 I plan to make more op shopping videos, maybe a few reviews and just some general crochet videos based on projects I'm working on. If you have any suggestions, by all means, let me know ☺️
      Ballarat and the surrounding region have some great op shops, lots of little treasures to find! The smaller church based ones are cheaper than the Salvo's or Vinnies, but don't always have the same variety. Still, well worth the trip up here, it's a lovely drive and a great day out ☺️
      I believe I have seen a few of Corinna's Just Vintage Crochet videos, and they are great! Some of the patterns she re-creates are quite intricate, aren't they? Love watching to see how they come together ☺️
      I never thought of making a box with those granny squares. That's an interesting idea 😊 Thank you for the suggestion!

Show us what you make and don't forget to put a little dot on the pattern when you're finished so you know which ones you have completed. My favorite vintage yarn is "DAZELAIRE ". Allot of the old pattern books are crochet or knit in UK terms, so if you translate to US its easy. I made a effort to learn UK technique through vintage hoe to crochet/knit books. Theyre actually quite simplistic recipes compared to todays patterns that usually cover more detail. After a while one appreciates the simplistic and old terminology's and yes I love the old patterns and collect/archive them also/with backing up to digital to archive... From Ballarat Oz :)

    • @MelsYarniverse
      @MelsYarniverse  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh, so nice to hear from another local! 😀 Yes, I think I might have to spend some time translating soon. The older patterns do seem to be more simplistic - there doesn't seem to be as many instructions with them - and I was a bit concerned that maybe that might lead to a bit of confusion - do you have any troubles at all?

    • @TheEnchantedDuat
      @TheEnchantedDuat 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@MelsYarniverse I have no trouble at all :) If you struggle with anything just hit me up and Ill help. Knitting originally came about from the Northern hem. and is essentially a Nordic tradition of origin with a celtic branch off inc recent Irish Lace, then leading to UK terminology today... Then the US branch off... But yeah just holler if you get stuck. A good series of books on techniques/colorwork is 'Knit Like a Latvian' books (she has three out) and any old Norwegian Knitting books. Garn (now called yarn) crafting/knitting used to be part of the Norwegian curriculum and simple recipes were assumed that everyone could knit due to the curriculum and or family Nordic traditions.

    Both my mother and my grandmother were incredibly talented knitters and would knit beautiful, intricate patterns. When it came to crochet or "french knitting" as they called it, they only knew the basics. I hated knitting, it hurt my fingers, but I had no one to teach me how to read and do crochet patterns. My mum had a friend who could crochet doilies and I begged her to teach me, but she didn't want to. Trying to do anything complicated these days is too hard because of my eyesight. I wish we had youtube tutorials around 30 years ago! I would have loved to learn fancy crochet. These days I'm just focusing on what I can manage, like scarfs, bags, blankets and I'm attempting a poncho!

      Oh Angela, I'm so sorry you weren't able to learn like you wanted to. I'm so glad you picked it up again and are able to create with crochet, even though it's not the fancy kind that you hoped for. I'm sure your work is still absolutely beautiful. My Mum and grandmother were both amazing knitters too, and between them both, they were able to teach me the very basics of knitting, but that's about it. I couldn't quite get the hang of crochet though, no matter how hard I tried. I came back to crochet last year and had another try, and it finally just sort of clicked. That was mainly because of youtube tutorials and being able to see what to do with the hook. I tried teaching myself with books but just couldn't work it out, so youtube helped significantly. I hope to be able to help others in the same way if I can. Thank you for sharing your story with me 😊

      @MelsYarniverse oh I tried learning with books as well, but just like you, I could never figure it out! I ended up learning how to sew instead, and it was something I had an aptitude for and I ended up doing a degree in costume at the Adelaide College for the Arts. If I had someone to teach me fancy crochet, maybe I would have never taken up sewing! I had to give up work just a couple of years ago due to chronic pain and my eyesight, both are caused by auto immune disease (I have chronic uveitis).
