As someone that to date has inherited 3 different friends yarn stashes, I applaud your organising. I just filled up garbage bags and put it in the garage until I wanted to look at it. Well done you.
Sooo satisfying to see you organize all your yarn! I always love seeing your color choices. It’s so colorful and fun. I also had so much acrylic yarn that I bought when I first started and didn’t know what to do with until I finally donated the majority of it
My sister is busy trying to crochet rugs for her Church sale... I gave her 2 garbage bags full of Acrylic yarn that had lost its appeal to me, but will be wonderful for her.
I love stickybeaking other people's stashes, thanks Ash! Re: donating Acrylic yarn, if you're still looking to do that might be worth seeing if there's a local Red Cross or Community craft group, as they often knit blankets/beanies etc. for charity or the little handknit teddies they keep in Ambulances to give to the little kids who have to travel in them.
your struggles with piling the yarn into the shelving units reminded me of Engineering Knits' idea of adding a cross shelf into these kinds of shelves to create smaller nooks for yarn storage. she shows them in her yarn organisation video.
Smart thinking!! I will check that out and see if I can do something similar! I am actually scoping out some enclosed storage units at the moment because I am getting so paranoid of moths!
Having all of my stash in Ravelry is great. Ravelry will suggest it when I’m looking at a pattern if someone has knit that pattern in a yarn I have. And I love how I can look up what I have and how much. It’s so satisfying. I don’t put a yarn away until I’ve logged it on Rav.
That was satisfying to watch! I started out in the big box stores then transitioned to local yarn shops, fiber festivals, spinning, etc. I now feel like all yarn is good yarn and don’t judge any of it for being too cheap or too expensive. Use what you like and what’s in your budget. Kindness is free. ❤❤❤ ps just subbed!
Thank you so much! It’s totally about the knitting experience for me! They’re pricy yarns I don’t vibe with and there are low cost yarns I love! It’s great to have a mix in the collection!
I have watched about 15 videos today of how to organize your yarn stash. No one has mentioned two of my favorite Ravelry stash features. The advanced search and the “stored in” feature. If I want to see if I have a green, worsted weight, wool yarn with over 500 yards, I can plug in those’d features and find out which location it is stored in.
I agree it took me way more time than I thought as well. I have about 75 percent in Ravelry and I am glad for my decision to use that app ... It also showed how much I had! I need to get it into some sort of safe storage!
It takes sooo long but sooo worth it! I should probably get some airtight tubs to keep the moths out but right now I’m too lazy and just throw a bunch of cedar rings in with my yarn 😅
I went through my yarn stash, I didn't categorise it. But the yarns I accumulated early in my journey that I know I won't use, I donated to my kids' after school care because the educators were doing knitting and crochet workshops with kids who wanted to learn and they needed practice yarn for the kids.
Hi! First time here for me. You popped up unexpectedly in ,y recommendations. Im so happy to see your stash. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.💗
I am so happy to know you can organize yarn on ravelry. I never knew. This video was great! I have an entire room plus filled with yarn and it is overwhelming to think about organizing. This video has given me motivation.
I just finished itemizing every skein of yarn I have and put it into notion. It was so tedious and took forever but it’s great to have a digital searchable database of all of my yarn.
Ravelry is a very powerful database and having your stash in there is so useful. Highly recommend exploring the ways you can search patterns etc and cross-reference across patterns and your stash. The Queue is a great place to make note of potential yarn/pattern combos and then decide later what you want to do. Congrats on getting it all sorted!
omg so satisfying to see it all in ravelry. i just have a powerpoint presentation and each category of yarn has it's own slide eg DK wool, DK cotton, fingering wool, fingering cotton, fluff etc. But i'm a bit lazy and i just copy photos from the dyers websites, so if it was a mystery yarn or they didn't have a photo of the base i ordered there is no photo and it's really annoying but i am simultaneously to lazy to photograph it myself. i should just do it though, your stash photos look really amazing and i think they would make colourwork planning much easier.
I feel like I find new features every day! I just found out you can log all your different needle types in there too, so now we both have something new on our to-do lists! haha!
I really enjoyed this video Ash and loved seeing how you’ve organised your stash. I agree that at the start I purchased a lot of yarn from spotlight that I have little intention of using, but haven’t gotten rid of any of it. I really should do that at some stage but the overwhelm is real! 😳
I inherited a stash recently and it got me back into crochet in a big way. Im thrilled but most of it is cheap acrylics and i immediately gravitated towards bulky yarns to make plushies, so its all pretty useless for me lol A lot of the stash was partially used skeins and small balls of scrap, so ive mostly been winding them into cakes and trying to use it up where appropriate. Im making decent progress but theres just so many lol it felt a little silly to be gifted all this yarn and suddenly go out to buy chenilles and simply soft, but oh well. I made some keychains with it, and a sort of project bag to hold various colors nearby. Ill find some way to use it up, but i have a bad feeling that ill find myself wanting more before i actually get through it all lol!
It’s always so awkward when you’re given or inherit a yarn stash because you want to be grateful but at the same time it’s yarn you would have never purchased independently! I hope you find a way to utilise it!! 😊
As a new knitter, there is one thing I am tired of hearing, knitters complaining about acrylic yarn and Superwash yarns. it seems like everyone is watching each other videos and just repeating what they hear and doing what the other one is doing. They are complaining about acrylic yarn but instead of saying just that, they blame their hate on the "screechiness of the yarn". Everyone is talking about natural and animal fiber. Not one person has done research into the treatment of the animals or the replanting of the trees. They read a label saying "It has the approval..." and they move on.
As someone that to date has inherited 3 different friends yarn stashes, I applaud your organising. I just filled up garbage bags and put it in the garage until I wanted to look at it. Well done you.
That’s my usual organisation strategy 😂 but theres no room in the garage for any yarn
I’m the same, I have a whole sideboard full of wool. Currently knitting up a cardigan out of “wool” from 1960s from the stash.
Sooo satisfying to see you organize all your yarn! I always love seeing your color choices. It’s so colorful and fun. I also had so much acrylic yarn that I bought when I first started and didn’t know what to do with until I finally donated the majority of it
Yay! Thank you! It feels so good to tick a big task like this off my list!

Me too! That’s a great idea, thank you!

That’s so cool! I didn’t know Ravelry suggested yarn for project based on other people’s projects! Thanks for letting me!

Congratulations on a beautifully organized stash! Seeing all of the neat pictures in ravelry made me want to do the same! It looked so satisfying!
Thank you!! It totally was!

So glad I could help! I might need to do another organisation because I keep collecting more yarn 😅 haha
I just finished itemizing every skein of yarn I have and put it into notion. It was so tedious and took forever but it’s great to have a digital searchable database of all of my yarn.
Congrats! It’s so handy having it all at your finger tips!
This was so fun to watch! The organization looks great. I would love a video about reclaiming yarn from wips.
Thank you! I totally should! There is so much nice yarn currently in limbo!

It’s awesome! I feel like I could spend a whole lifetime in there and still find new ways to use it!
Thank you for taking us on this journey 💞
You are so welcome!
Huge fan of the comfy clothes 😊
Your yarn colors are just so happy!
Thanks!!
I probably wouldn't have dumped everything 😂 it would take me days!! I just organize each area on a different day. I need to shop my stash more.
Very impressive!
That RAV stash 🥹
Incredible!
It’s sooooo satisfying!

It was a lot of work initially but completely worth it! Plus it makes it easier to add yarn to the projects I cast on in Ravelry!
I’m not all that familiar with Ravelry so I didn’t know we could list our yarn in there. Yay!
It’s a surprisingly versatile website! Glad I could help!!
Well I’ve learnt something new about ravelry and have a new item on my to do list - stash list
I feel like I find new features every day! I just found out you can log all your different needle types in there too, so now we both have something new on our to-do lists! haha!
@@SmashKnits omg I have my needles and hooks to do as well

Thank you!! I can definitely appreciate the overwhelm with a stash like yours 😂
Looks great! I go for the same types of colors as you :). Question: what is the draw string project bag with people on the pattern?
Love it! It’s a project bag from Patil Knits! I don’t know if they have this particular one in stock but they have other patterns I t he same design 😊
Que hermoso te quedó
Thank you so much!!
