Nice, looks pretty simple and straightforward. Just gotta take your time. The ITB clamps come off real easy if you have a 6mm socket on a flexible extension.
I would also do something better than just using the old valve covers, without cleaning them at the very least.. under that metal piece is usually a ton of gunk. The flaking OEM paint isn't good to let go as they did, that's what causes the leaks. Cheap to refinish the covers and PC outside.
It helps to take out the strut bars in the back and the air filters and so forth. Plus: while you have the plenum off, use the chance to use teflon spray/oil on the throttle body mechanics. Needs to be done once a year anyways.
glad you posted this... you affirmed my contentment with my inline 6. ill stick to my little 1 series N51 motor. DIY on that V8 looks grossly cumbersome. i am impressed by your positive attitude throughout the DIY though.
All BMW cars have aluminium bolts which don't have the resilience of iron bolts, but they are lot less lighter. So they ighly recommened to use new ones once removed.
Wow, I had no idea how nit-picky it is to have to buy spark plug tubes and each bolt.. If you don't mind, i'd like to know the total cost this was for you.. I have to do mine..
I'm a bit paranoid about some stuff, the first thing I'd do after exposing those throttle bodies is individually cover each one to make sure NOTHING gets in there.
Clean shop clothes work fine. It's a good idea to clean the throttle bodies and lube up any moving parts near the throttle actuators while in there too.
Josh Taylor great! When do you plan to clean the throttle linkages since you think that's what actually causes the actuators to wear? I have a squeaky contact point I still need to chase down and am torn between using a Teflon dry lube or oil. Seems like this is something that will need to be done periodically. I'm not quite brave enough to remove the ITBs for a deep cleaning either but maybe...

What's the silicone product you're talking about putting on the spark plug tubes?
Thank you for the DIY! I recently bought a 2011 BMW E90 M3 :D
Hope it helped!
that didnt look so hard to do!! gave me spirit to one day own a unreliable e92 or e90 m3
Thanks for showing me why I’m never getting one of those, and probably not any turbo anything, either. Long live my cheap and easy little e46 .
Thank you so much for providing a road map. will attempt it this winter. I'm going to buy from FCP Euro for lifetime warranty

Do they honor that lifetime warranty if you DIY’ed it? Or do you need to get the job done at an ASE cert shop?
@@jz497 both

Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully others will see it

Michael S yeah uhh I have an N52 and the valve cover job on that was an absolute nightmare. Much worse than this to be honest
Hey Josh where did you buy the valve cover bolts from? i checked on ECS Tuning and the total for 24 bolts was $200
I don't recall the price but I either bought from ECS or my local buddies at BMW of Fairfax.
curious why you didnt replace the covers while you were there ? i hear they warp and what not.
Hadn't heard that before. There was no leaking afterward, so guess they were okay.
Did you replace your Vanos Covers?
No, I didn't
It’s actually Christmas while I’m watching 😬
Do you have to use new bolts? What's the benefit?

What kind of torque wrench did u use?
+Da Rt $40 Craftsman deal
CatV cable in lieu of a wire hanger is a better alternative for pulling on the coil covers
nice job I have a 2010 m3 with 35mils

All said and done was just under $350.
Wow that's not bad at all...
Good job Pal!
you got the part numbers for the bolts?
For the 24 bolts (12 each side): 11127841217; for the 2 oddball bolts in the back corner (1 each side): 11127841218

because I would drop something right down in there...

@@geoffreyaugust0 No doubt I'd just stuff clean shop towels in them.
Did you have to drain your engine oil first?
+ohhgourami nope!

Would not use power tools like that unless the bolt is already loose, id break it with a ratchet first. Broke plenty of bmw shit like that
you have everything off. put a supercharger on lol
+dvsskateraok5 send me one :)
Doing so next week :)
Very unprofessional..no fender covers, throwing tools on the car.
This is an embarrassment
