Thanks for making these Rally Raid videos. It’s given me the confidence to do it myself. I installed my new RR engine guard yesterday. It was hard, but I did it. My mantra through the whole installation: “DO NOT CROSS-THREAD THE ENGINE MOUNT BOLTS”. I kept saying that to myself as a reminder to have patience and do it right.
Morning Bill! I could repair or replace the older crash bars, sounds like they have some rust inside. I wonder if they oiled the inside of their tubing? I think I'll just run without them for now, I question how effective they would be in an actual hard dumping.
Your video is the best resource I've seen that clearly shows the installation of RR's engine guard. I just installed one yesterday on my 2014 CB500x. It's a shame that shipping is so expensive from Europe to the USA for this product ($112.00 to Southern Oregon). BTW, "Giant Loop" (located in Bend, Oregon) no longer distributes Rally Raid products. You need to deal direct with Rally Raid now. The instructions I recieved with the guard has a good tip for aligning the frame tubes with the engine bolt holes. Use a ratchet strap attached at the rear footrest hanger to the frame tube. Cinch it down tight while looking through the hole until everything lines up. It worked great. I didn't have to fight it at all. Several people have asked about oil changes. I read a great suggestion (www.cb500x.com/) to install a Fumoto valve with a drain tube to eliminate the necessity of removing the main guard to change the oil. I would post a picture but cannot find a way to do it here in the "comment" section. Install an extension adapter to the valve, then a piece of 3/8 I.D. vinyl tube and a 90 degree brass fitting at the end. The vinyl tube is cut so the length extends just beyond the back of the guard (skid plate). The brass fitting is twisted into the up position until you need to change the oil, then simply twist the fitting down to drain into a pan. It may sound complicated, but if I could post a picture you'd see that it's very simple. Here is what you need to order: Fumoto F109N Oil Pan Drain Valve, 12-1.5 Thread Pitch And also an extension/adaptor: ADP-109: 1/2" EXTENSION ADAPTER FOR 12MM-1.5 VALVE The vinyl tubing and 90 degree brass fitting can be purchased at any hardware store. I've gotten a ton of benefit from instruction videos here on youtube and I hope the information I provided here today might be of some help to someone else. Thanks for posting these videos. They are very helpful.
Back in the day, Harley riders would put a mudflap in front of the rear tire, almost touching the ground. The reason was that if you run over a nail with the front tire, dieresis a 50/50 chance it will flip up and skewer the rear tire. The flap would knock it out of the way.
The sensor before the cat is an oxygen sensor. It provides rich/lean data to the engine control unit (ECU) to help in fuel control through the fuel injection.
Great Video! Thanks for sharing! Hope to see you video yourself putting the rest of the Rally Raid kit on your bike! :-) Love seeing your son help out! Mine does too quite often when I wrench.
Great video Juan, with good detail. It pays when you take us through each little detail, along with your own thoughts. Did you have any problems with the existing metric or standard, both allen and hex, bolt heads in relation to a tight fit on the wrench. I've done a lot of engine rebuilds and such and getting into re-threading engine casting holes and especially allen bolt holes not being a tight fit causing stripping in the bolt head is a pain in the butt, and that's putting it lightly. It looks like they engineered and bent the engine guard pretty close to matching the bolt pattern. Sometimes you don't get that lucky, like on headers, and you have to some mods yourself. Looking for a used CB500 or possibly new and trying to get through some of the details.
Mitchell Collins Change the oil? I wanna video that process with the RR guard on....just drop the rear pin and drain it. Pull the filter cover and replace it. No need to mess w/ fwd attch bolts.
Meeker Extreme yea, these ones are rusted out already. They also make a great place to locate additional lighting...Jenny's had several good dumps without bars and the bike's fared well....facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1167671459914625&set=a.1129102037104901.1073741832.100000153478798&type=1
blancolirio LOL I saw that picture and didn't realize it was a CBX500. I tend to end up on very difficult trails. It's my nature although I am wanting an adventure bike and start to do more point to point rides and take it easy on my body. It's a shame Honda does not just make an Adventure bike, and before someone says the 650L let's get real it's a great bike but it's so dated my XR650R runs laps around the L. So far I'm considering all adventure bikes from this Honda CBX500 with the Kit (that is a must) or a KTM 1190 R. Hard decision because I even still have the good old KLR650 on my list. Obviously I'm not brand loyal...hehehehe
Meeker Extreme Check out my KTM 690 videos, the ultimate off road oriented adventure bike....but expensive...I've enjoyed 'em all in the 650 size category....DR,KLR, DL,XR,XL, KTM...now the CBX, my next 'touring' bike.
blancolirio Yep, no one has really done any harder CB500X with rally Raid kit videos and that goes for Giant Loop. Sometime it happens you end up on an ATV trail or a short Single Track to cut to something....being Colorado it's very rocky and the headers out front would worry me some. I guess as long as you know they are there you can be more careful. As i said it's on my list...just wish it was a Honda kit then the dealer would probably have it and I could see it in person before committing.
Meeker Extreme Be sure to check out Moab and other technical parts of the TransAm 500 Tour (bike just returned to GL after 50-day, 12,000+ mile, coast-to-coast trip with return on the Trans American Trail. Not a single dent in the headers. www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1061450
Hey there. I've got another question for you. Since the RR Engine Guard utilizes the same mounting points as a tank guard (ex, Givi, SW-Motech), do you wish you had the option to throw on tank guards? Also how much protection does this add if you happen to lay down the bike on a trail?
+SidecarBandit I don't think the tank guards would add much additional protection, I think they'll just fold into the tank and possibly cause more damage. With barkbusters and the RRP Engine guard the bike can be dumped without scratching the tank (ask me how I know- lol). Very tough design unlike more expensive bikes....cheap to replace parts too (if necessary)
@@pb6003 the Rally Raid actually uses the same slot the centre stand bolt goes through. That's partly why it's so much better at protecting the underside. You can also use a Jack to lift the bike with Rally raid. My SW Motech works with the center stand, but it isn't as sturdy as the RR.
NURide Don't know yet...I doubt it. I'll do an oil change and video the process with the new bash plate and see how it goes. Probably just as easy to drop the rear of the bash plate.
How did you add your barkbuster storm guards without interference? I put mine on and took hours to do it as perfectly as I could. But the bars contact the windscreen at steering. So I had to lower my windscreen to where I didn't want it. Bar risers?
Bar risers may help, I recommend them for better ergonomics while standing and riding off road. You can trim a bit from the wind screen and plastic part of the Barkbuster.
blancolirio > Nice buddy. I'll be ordering mine soon. The good news is Rally Raid is makin em as orders come in. The bad is there's a two to three week wait. Must be a good product if it doesn't stay on the shelf.
Is it possible to install the longer sidestand as well as a third party bash plate, so that a local welding shop could lengthen the stock center stand? What i mean is there any way to keep the stock center stand?
Morning Alex. I assume you are talking about a full level 2/3 conversion? i.e. raising the bike? Yes, you can install the RRP extended kickstand BUT can the 3rd party bashplate fully support the bike to do the conversion in the first place? Will a 3rd party bash plate also use the sturdy center stand mount? When bashing through rock gardens you really don't want a center stand, but I know how convenient they are...maybe consider a level 1 conversion with a 3rd party bash plate and stock center stand for mild adventuring....JB
Hi JB, thank you for the quick reply. I was just curious to know wheter or not they are exclusive. I am dabbling with the thought of buying the kit, but its doubtfull at best if the german vehicle control will pass the conversion in the first place. Kinda envy the american approach. Do you recon a 17" spoked wheel is valid anyways? For most gravel and slightly rocky roads they might be, right?
Jack Themuss Thanks, just got this one, gonna be my long range adventure bike going on similar adventures to what I've already posted. Stuff out west, off road.
Hmm, how much of a pain is it to change the oil then? The oil filter cover is just two bolts to remove, but dropping the whole bash plate just to change the oil after the installation you just described - no thanks !!! Or does unbolting the back end and swinging it down provide enough access? Hopefully this would not involve loosening the front engine/frame bolts too, since that would involve breaking and redoing the loctite, and retorquing the bolts. No thanks to that as well.
gargantuandick Don't know yet...It will weigh a bit more than stock . I did weigh the rear RR spoke wheel w/ HD tube and TKC 80 tire....it was 7 lbs heavier than stock tubeless tire and wheel.
I'm going back and watching your CB500X videos. That bike deserves more attention than it gets. I've been really tempted to go look at one, but I also can't wait to see the Africa Twin. Wow do you have to go through all that when you do a oil change? ??
What video does Jenny talk about the forward engine mount bolts and converting to through bolts?
Thank you :-). Excellent and informative video.
Good video. Does anyone tried to fit this rally raid again with centre stand? On models 20192021.thx
great video. how well does the rally raid engine protect the pipes in case the front tire should kick up a stone?
@blancolirio I am installing this as well on my 2021. I also have an exhaust to swap. Should I do that before the engine guard or does it matter?
Looks good. Do you have a good option to replace the cracked engine guards that is compatible with these other new bits?

Are the spoked wheels in the Rally Raid product designed to run tubeless tires or do you have to run tubes?
