I think when I'm 90 and in a nursing home, the only thing I'll remember are lyrics to every bright eyes song, and I'll just be singing them nonstop once Im deep into dementia

I always say this, no one compares. Not even close. I've been listening to him since I was 13 and it has been amazing to slowly start understanding more and more of what he's saying. Absolutely brilliant.

Conor got me through a bunch of stuff in my youth but most importantly got me through some tough road trips. He has a true voice that uncommon nowadays. Blessings to you man. I hope you are as happy as you have made an infinite amount of people.
There is such a warmth and honesty that comes with bright eyes. And yeah.. they got me through my teenage angst as well 😅

Omg the solo in ziggzagginf towards the light is so epic. I love how it's so in contrast to the rest of the song yet still fits so well. I wish the album version had it.

interesting how he changes the lyrics. the recorded version says "and I don't know if it's true but i keep it for good luck" while a different live performance says "and I don't think that it's true but i keep it for good luck" and this performance says "and I know that's not true but i keep it for good luck"
Maybe he just forget the exact lyrics. Also very common.
as someone who writes songs, i think it's much more likely that he just edited it either for that particular performance, or just overall. i often go back to old poems/songs and edit them slightly to what i think is better.
There are multiple times he changed the lyrics here. For example speeches start to slur is originally features start tp blur
the first time i saw him live when he was touring cassadaga where he was supposed to say "i was a hopeless romantic, now im just turning tricks" he said "i was a hopeless romantic, now im just sucking dick"

I believe he changes the lyrics and rythm because songs aren't just repetative music abd lyrics, songs are emotion and emotions change and feelings fade. You must change the song to match your life at the moment. On a side note, I am not a huge fan of the beard.
My favorite most hated part of loving part of loving conor is how he purposefully makes it difficult to sing along to his songs live. He hates fame so much he doesn't want us to sing along with him

Bright eyes appears defunct from what I've heard until further notice but check out the youtube of Connor w. Dawes backing him at the Haldern pop festival. Dawes is amazing! Even more so live. His songs on upside mountain sound so much better with Dawes than the album versions I wish he could of gotten them to record the album with him. Hopefully a collaboration on an album between them will happen at some point. Would love it if T-Bone Burnett was at the helm producing...
For me, Bright Eyes has really just been about Conor, since the other musicians have rotated around. He has so many bands, but they're all amazing, and no matter what name is on the album if it's Conor, it's Conor.
angels-in-the-impala-43 I know... Was mainly referring to the Bright Eyes line up he had for the "Peoples Key" tour which I saw on a youtube for SXSW. It's a pretty killer lineup which I'm bummed I probably won't get a chance to see...
Bright eyes is conor, Mike mogis, and nate wallcot (playing piano). Mike took a break to be with his kids. Until all three are together no bright eyes :(

I realize Nate has been there for a lot of great Work, but knowing the Band's Work from a while back, I always think of Bright Eyes as being a two-pierce Band.

Ort I understand why someone would not like his singing, it's unconventional, although I personally love it. I think he is so popular though, because a lot of our generation grew up listening to him, I have since highschool, and I really connected with how he felt, just similar views on life love etc. I believe he is a great poet, and his writing is what keeps me listening to him. Music is subjective, I can't genuinely say someone sucks because I don't like it. To each his own

I'm not getting down on someone for liking him. My young nephew and his wife love him. I just personally am not attracted to someone who sings like they can't hold a tune. JMO, and if you like his music, I hope you enjoy it. : )
People get so exposed to pop stars having perfectly crafted, autotuned voices. Conor is loved because he's a raw talent who writes his OWN music
To me there's a huge appeal to someone who isn't a particularly naturally gifted singer but still pushes forward with their songwriting as a mode of expression. You tend to get way better songs that way because that's what it's all about, they're not going to get famous just based on their vocal abilities so it stands to reason that the songwriting has to be extra special. There's lots of people out there who are excellent singers but making terrible music because they don't write good songs, they're only in the position they're in because of their vocal talents and nothing more. So, particularly in the early 2000's it was a breath of fresh air to hear someone sounding so vulnerable and flawed delivering really beautiful songs. And keep in mind that Conor comes from a 90's punk rock background, inspired no doubt by everything from Archers of Loaf to Daniel Johnston, that approach had much more emphasis on raw emotion and creativity than precision technique and preconcieved ideas of tonal perfection.
Either way his live performances are admittedly inconsistent but he usually delivers some actual emotional heft and he definitely can sing in tune, though his tremolo vocal technique gives his voice a shakey and uncertain vibe a lot of the time.
