For anyone doing this: It really does not matter if the cut isn't super straight, so don't worry about it. You'll put the straight edge up that you didn't cut up against the wooden part of the platform and the cut edge on the outside, and even if it's not flush, plates will rarely, if ever be out towards that part of the mat. When I did this, my cuts were complete crap, and in one small section, there's a chunk of mat that doesn't cover up the plywood underneath. I was initially bummed out about it, but in two and a half years of using my platform in my garage gym, I've never once had a loaded barbell anywhere near that janky edge.
I’ve made two deadlift platforms and used Horse stall Matt’s for other projects. Never thought to use a pipe under it to elevate it while cutting. Usually just lifted with my own hand but the pipe makes it a lot simpler

Cut stall mats for my mom's horses, my buddies gym, and my garage gym. Great tips, and the water trick is spot on! For marking the line a carpenters chalk line with red chalk works great, too.

You can use oil to cut with the blade; it'll keep the edge from overheating and give you flush cuts, make your marks and then apply a coat of oil on the line as you go. also, using a piece of particle board (the thin ones are good)as a straight edge helps immensely to ensure your cuts are done quickly and straight
the difference this makes over the method shown is minimal and at best only makes up for sloppy technique. for superior cut accuracy and minimum heat transfer to the material, get yourself an industrial CNC water jet cutter. they are expensive but this will prevent the edge of your disposable knife from overheating, and you can hire and train staff to run a manufacturing business to help pay for it

Hi, when Im doing more than 2-3 pieces, I just create template from old cardboard box, so I dont need to measure the pieces everytime. And usually that helps me to keep everthing consistent...you know, like touching the bar on same spot on your chest during benchpress ;)

Great content, appreciate the advice as always, but I've seen war movie footage with a more stable camera. I'd recommend they back up just a touch so we can get everything in frame at once. We don't need to see every speck in the floor mat here, that level of detail isn't required.
Hey Alan, you can make the process a fair bit faster using a dedicated caulk/sealant/silicone remover bit for an oscillating saw / multi tool, or use an old wood blade that's sharpened on a belt sander, means you can do a whole 2.4m mat in like 45 seconds.
@@CursedWheelieBin well plenty of people have a multitool, and a caulk remover blade usually comes included lol. I used mine to cut up my mats for my oly platform. getting the tool out the box, fixing the blade and plugging it in took longer than cutting 1 sheet.
I said this on the last video but I’ve committed to donating my own hair that I started growing almost exactly 1 year ago with my separation from the army. I was originally gonna cut it this month at 9 inches but I think that 6 more months is well worth it if I can help a good cause.

This is a big deal. The rubber crumb mats are no where near as durable as an actual stall mat. Go to an equestrian center and get a real stall mat. I normally find they are about the same price and the quality is far above the crumb mats.
id think a table saw or a circular saw on a track (or up against a guide) with a 90, 120 or 140 tooth blade would work especially if you were doing a lot of cutting. i've cut 1/2" and 1" thick sheets of HDPE before and it was always quick, smooth and straight (cant remember the tooth count)
I have tried cutting stall mats with a circular saw, wasn't very be easy and the blade was brand new. Mr. Thrall's method, out of all the methods I tried, was the easiest for me
i worked installing rubberized play mats and tried both quik cut and circular which were both dismal failures. the rubber cuts easily, the heat of the blade is the problem as it melts and accumulates on the blade.

The yoga mat came rolled up in a plastic wrap, which was fairly easy to remove.Contents: I got the green yoga mat and it came with an adjustable velcro carrying strap already secured to the mat. There was also a warranty card. There was a bit of a plastic smell coming form the yoga mat but it quickly dissipated after using it once.I've only used the yoga mat twice so far but I am loving it. It's such a game changer to my work outs, especially compared to my bed and floor, haha! I can confirm that it very thick, slip resistant, and comfortable. i didn't look at the dimensions prior to buying the mat, but it is so much longer than I expected! Width is normal size in my opinion. I don't know if it really is tear resistant yet... only time will tell!
I just layed 2 horsestall mats on the basement floor, side-by-side. That's my deadlift platform. Hardest part was just getting them out of the car. Not the easiest things to carry around as they are heavy and flop all around.

I just setup a half garage gym and cleared 15 years of junk in other side by throwing a ton away and getting 2 Craftsman 4x6 sheds and have Rep Fitness rack with 4 horse stall mats and my 14 year old son is now out there with me and there's not enough space so need to cut some of these and this looks easy! We use horse stall mats in our home garage gym. They are nearly indestructible but might stink for a bit. For anyone curious.

What works even better for marking is the soapstone pen. It lasts better than chalk and will come off in short order.

Jig saw with the right blade cuts through this stuff like butter.

I used a Sawzall the other day. But if you dont have it hanging off a table and cut along the table for rigidity it wont work.
