Carpathian mountain 5 x 5 metre mowing trial with a scythe

  • It is often said that continental European scythes of a lighter construction compared to Anglo-American types because grassland in is lighter and therefore easier to mow in drier eastern Europe compared to the damp lush grassland of the British Isles. To test this out for myself I took the opportunity to mow a 5 x 5 metre square at 1000 m+ atop a mountain in Transylvania and compared this against my 5 x 5 m times from competitions back in the UK.
    My verdict: the grass being shorter and lighter was quicker to move, so my time was faster than in West country (Somerset); the sward was still quite dense at the base so cutting speed was not so very different to that on dry grassland in Eastern England (Cambridge).

    Used to do that in Poland some 40 years ago. Hard work.
    Now, at 62, I do it often in the morning, for a few minutes, to work my lower back. Awesome exercise.
    The guy in the video, takes it to the extreme, would not last long.

    Do you not think the altitude played some factor? The majority of the UK is less than 5m above sea level, here you're somewhere in the range of 2000+m. Thinner air.

    • @maxdecphoenix
      @maxdecphoenix 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nami yes, I think when I did a quick skim research for that comment I took the maximum elevation and scaled it down, I should have used the average and scaled up. Soon as I read your comment I realized vegitation wouldn't even grow at 2000 meters. Regardless, difference between 5m and 1200m is still a difference of several thousand feet.

      You're dead right, but when you are really going for it, flat out as it were, you tend to just dispense with comfort and smoothness, and just use all the strength you have. Competition scythers can be the worst looking spectacles to showcase the craft, as they dispense with the smooth efficient technique in favour of pure brawn to make the time.

      Yes you are absolutely right. Sprint racing is not real mowing just fun, and posture tends to go a bit. When mowing properly for longer periods always mow with ease and good posture

    Its extremely dangerous to stop urself immediately after a hard labour. Its like bringing your racing heart to a dead stop. You should let your heart beat slow down slowly and steadily. I nearly died once when I laid down immediately after working hard for 10 minutes.
