Scythe troubleshooting for the time-poor mower

  • Some quick and easy tests that you can perform to check some of the most common problems in scythe setup, BEFORE you start investing any more time.
    If it helps you, please like and share - there's a growing body of really bad scything videos out there!
    We DO NOT recommend any of these approaches as long-term solutions. You should hold your scythe in the way that feels most comfortable to you while working, and then adjust the angles to suit your body in its comfort zone. These approaches will simply highlight whether a change in angles is going to be beneficial, which you can then address properly.

    Thanks for that. VERY helpful, indeed. New to using a scythe and recently restored a vintage French blade, with fittings. I find using it so much better than a noisy mower. Thanks for making this video.

    Wonderful vid, I just got a scythe. Im short and thankfully the handles are adjustable.
    However I find after I rotate even a quarter of the way, the blade angle is parallel to me, as the blade is no longer cutting. I find Im ripping the long grass out at full rotation as its binding at the blade joint.
    Any pointers on adjusting the blade to open it up more on the swing?
    Thanks

    I had a European style snath made, would an American blade like the Seymour work with it?

    Hi. Thanks for the videos. I am a newbie scythe'r with 4 acres of rough paddock top go at! I noticed that the tip of your scythe has a semi-circular notch - please explain what this is for? Thanks

      It's called a 'stone point', or even 'the nail'. It's just a point that's designed to withstand some knocks onto rocks or other hard things, to protect the actual cutting edge. It can also separate tufty grasses prior to the cutting edge engaging.
      It probably comes down to a matter of preference as to whether it's actually useful or not. Some people prefer to have the cutting edge come all the way out to the tip.

    What is the best scythe blade for alfalfa

    • @BladerunnersScythes
      @BladerunnersScythes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would depend on what stage of growth you're harvesting. If the plants aren't yet thickened into woody stems a fine edge will work very well. If the plants are beginning to become woodier or if you have any stones or other obstacles in the field, a more robust edge will be safer.
      In terms of length, anything from 65cm above would be reasonable, but it depends on your experience; longer blades cut deeper into the crop and are therefore a bit faster, but they also require more skill to set up properly and manage while mowing.
