- The mid-2000's were a treasure trove of new horror. Hatchet, Hostel, and Saw were able to make an impact and get a few sequels for their trouble. But there was one film that ended up lost amongst the shuffle of good horror. So today, we're focusing on the sequel that should have been with Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon.

Leslie Vernon is THE most underrated horror flick in the post 2000 era. Easily.
Behind The Mask holds such a special place in my heart. It transports me back to a time when I was just starting to get into film, when I was just hanging with my homies and watching cool flicks. It was the best of times, the worst of times lol
This movie is Hands Down Criminally Underrated & Awesome, and did wished we got a franchise of this film, definitely an amazing horror gem of a film.

Nathan Baesel absolutely nailed this role. I'm shocked he hasn't been in more movies.

I've always loved the movie it was a breath of fresh air for the stagnant slasher flims just like what scream did but differently.
I can't say that I'm surprised that Hollywood wanted it to their way and prevented the trilogy from happening.
Absolutely, this movie needs the recognition it deserves, and we, the fans, deserve the sequel we need....
I definitely want a sequel to this! I love the movie and it has an incredible amount of franchise potential. I was So excited with announcement of a sequel happening years ago and I think I remember seeing a clip or pic of a table read of the script for the sequel but then suddenly all talk of it vanished. Now that I know why it just makes me sad and surprised in some ways because you would think a studio like Lionsgate or Blumhouse would be all for getting on board for a potential movie franchise like this. Hopefully one day we will get to see sequels get made.

Agreed. I rented it on a recommendation from a friend with very poor taste in Horror. Shushed them the whole movie, and then saw it on clearance at the same video store. Promptly wore that DVD out.
Really surprised none of the streaming services like Netflix or Shudder (or even Prime) would pick this up
Behind the Mask was on Shudder for a LONG time. I'm kinda sad that it's not anymore.
Behind the Mask is one of those movies that I love to introduce people to. Its just that good. It also makes for a fantastic double feature with the original Hatchet.
Behind the Mask The Rise of Leslie Vernon 2006 & SEVERANCE 2006 are the most underrated films ever
This movie should be more popular. Would be a cool remake if done faithfully. It's one of my all time favorites. Very unique and original despite being a cliched genre. Thanks for giving it some love.

Behind The Mask was such a great movie. I’d love for it to one day get a sequel, but only if Nathan Baesel, Angela Goethals and Robert Englund reprised their roles. I have no interest in a remake or reboot with more famous actors playing those roles.

I remember seeing this movie at 13 it was such a fun movie I'm 28 now and gotta say......it still holds up especially to us millennials ...as for Gen z........sorry yall are too simple for this movie lol 😆 😂 jk much love
As a full blood Gen-X dude, I absolutely love this movie!! A friend turned me onto it right after the DVD release, watch it pretty much every Halloween, still holds up completely.

I pledged years ago but nothing came of it. I am a huge fan… i own a coffee shop and every year around the harvest moon we make “Vernon’s Apple Cider” Nathan is always super cool and retweets and has even offered to stop in with Angela and hang out when he comes in the area for any kind of convention. Great people, made great movies… loved this.
The lead actress I remember from an early episode of Grey's Anatomy where her character had a condition that caused her to blush uncontrollably at the slightest thing
This movie is on my list of horror movies that setup/deserve a sequel! Off topic, but The Final Girls is on that list too. Both movies are a good time!

Small detail, but it would have been nice if you mentioned the little in character cameo of Leslie in Dead Meat's Kill Count episode on Behind The Mask.
This gem is one that I can’t pass up on when I come across the dvd at a thrift or flea market, I just buy em all and give them to friends who’ve mainly all become fans

Leslie Vernon is my absolute favorite horror movie of all time, I love how they poke at and reference other slasher films and the common tropes used in them, plus Leslie is just a good killer character, seeming like a goofy weird guy to a serial murderer

This is one of the best newer slashers! And along with the taking nod Debra logan, it’s the best found footage film. I have found footage but man this is so unique that it works
Great film. Needs a sequel, sooner rather than later. I remember Angela Goethals from V.I. Warshwski. That was what initially got me onto the film. Maybe a suggestion for your sister station? I'm a fan of both movies.
Anyway, is the change in story, format and tone predictable? Yes. Was there another way to go in act 3? I don't see how it could've gone in ANY other direction. Besides, it feels to me like we need a sequel. They could retool the concept they have so that it works. I like the idea of the romance and the team up.
If they do ever get a sequel and don’t have Nathan and Angela it wont be a sequel 😭 they are so amazing it wouldn’t work without them.
If they made a sequel today they could put in the real life struggles they are having to the the sequel into the film such as the funding and studio interferrence.

Kinda like a Slasher Saw, where Leslie lays out everything to make him survive final girl showdowns as Jigsaw did, would be awesome.
But I love the original, sadly it flew under my radar for years, no wonder it failed at the box office. But it was the mid 2000s so with the internet of today and movies like Terrifyer getting so much attention, it is the time to rise again for Leslie.

BTM is one of my favorite slashers. I own the blu-ray. Nathan Baesel is fantastic in it. I am so happy I discovered this gem. I would love a sequel.
Behind the Mask was f*ing amazing, and Nathan Baesel totally made the movie. Studios are freaking idiots, it should NOT be remade. They should have given it a sequel.

Absolute masterpiece. Phenomenal film.
That MTV pitch sounds interesting, and with the film being a breakdown of horror it'd be interesting to see where that'd shift or change. Seeing in universe defense classes for slashers or for saw type traps. And how that could affect slashers love of the game.
I remember when the first film came out and it was good just because it was such a new and unique voice which normally doesn't happen anymore . Normally you get one or two unique voices and then 10 years of people copying it
I have no clue they tried or even did anything with a sequel I've never talk about it but, anyways, love these videos. Sometimes give you a hard time or playing but I really really love this content I would love to see you do some of the more not as popular I guess let's say Brian yunza stuff ..
This is one of the few films I feel could have had a really good sequel. But I'm also glad it didn't

Love this movie! I do wish for a sequel, but you know, hearing that executives initially wanted to remake it with different actors, that could actually be the best case for Behind the Mask today. Remake the first for a new audience, and then give us the sequel we've been wanting. What do y'all think??
Yeah, I would have to agree. The first one just has the cheap kind of feel to it and I can see it doing wonders with full support of a major studio behind them along with a budget that can hire some great actors and top-tier production.
If they put their pride aside and take a deal like that, it would do great.
