- Lily Gladstone was born in 1986 and grew up on the Blackfeet Reservation. Her father is of Blackfeet and Nimíipuu descent and her mother is white.
Gladstone acknowledges her family and community’s role in her accomplishments. While Gladstone had considered giving up acting, her parents and community pushed her to keep going. While her mother is not indigenous, she worked to make sure there would be a Blackfoot language teacher in her classroom growing up.
Gladstone has performed in several movies and TV shows that feature Native American history and culture including her film debut, Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian and the TV show Reservation Dogs.
Gladstone gained household name recognition with her performance alongside Leonardo DiCaptrio in Killers of the Flower Moon. While the character Gladstone plays is Osage, Gladstone shared that she brought her own background into the performance. Her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon made her the first Native American to be nominated for an Oscar as an Actress in a Leading Role, and the first Indigenous person to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture.
The Blackfeet Nation made Mach 26, 2024, “Lily Gladstone Day” and performed a ceremony in Browning, Montana, where she grew up. At the ceremony, Gladstone was awarded a stand-up headdress, a high honor in the Blackfeet tribe.
