      KDP print, in color, is gorgeous! The interior pages are really nice, with vivid colors and a slight gloss. The colors are true (as they were in the file). Please be sure to review IngramSpark's color interior printing...I think you will find this interesting, especially if a side-by-side comparison. If only these could be combined; IngramSpark for distribution and KDP for interior print quality...then POD would be a no brainer.

      I have worked with KDP Print, and before, with CreateSpace, for about 5 years and have found that the over-all quality of their b&w to be fine. I made a foray with printing with Ingram Spark, and was severely disappointed. The print quality was inferior, despite what others have said, and the struggle (and cost) of working with Ingram Spark was definitely not worth it. I am encouraged by your review of the KDP color print options, as this is something I want to try out. I only wish KDP print would have distribution options at industry rates as does Ingram Spark.

    Just finally had time to watch this and I'll throw in my two cents. My Guess What children's series is in full color with KDP (well, actually when it was CS) and I was happy with the quality. They're 36 pages. I did not use bleed though because of the format but I have edited, designed, and formatted full bleed for other children's authors and those turned out well too.
    The production cost is a bugger so it's key not to go over 40 pages. Every page over that starts to add to the cost. When I first published mine, I priced them at $11.99 but got very few sales at that. After the third book in the series, I lowered the price on all of them to $9.99 which increased sales. Sure, I made less but sold more and for me, it was about getting the books in more hands, especially since the illustrations were done by Kids Around the World that I picked from art contests I ran and I wanted them to get as much public recognition as possible.
    I have not used Ingram Spark yet but from seeing other authors' books through them, the paper quality is a bit better but I still think that's subjective as I've heard pros and cons compared to KDP.
    I have, however, published 7 full-color, low-content books in a children's niche and a few of them have sold at $9.99. A lot went into them with illustrations, formatting, etc so overall, I haven't seen the ROI that I hoped for. It was a good experiment though.
    As always, thanks for posting videos worth watching. 🍌🍌 I remembered the bananas. 🤣

    KDP's pricing on colored books is outrageous and crazy, I have a 640-page travel book on Israel I hoped to publish on KDP. However, the minimum pricing I have to charge for it to just break even is $74.00. In order to make any money whatsoever, I will need to charge $85 plus dollars. On the other hand, Ingram Spark only charges on $16.00 to print the book. So I can sell the book for $25.00 and make around $8.00 royalty profit. I don't understand why KDP is so expensive to print a color version of a book. Does anyone know why this is so?

    Hi Dale, great vid! Question for you about color prints on KDP .. What if you have 10 small color photos inside your book ... would you having the book printed in "color" to enhance these small pics be worth it? Is the cost for the entire book based in color or will I only be charged for those small 10 pic's?

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In order to print those 10 pictures in color, you would have to select color for the entire book. This should give you an idea of how much that will cost you - kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201834340

    I know I have only published two titles so far but whether I ordered two proof copies or 10 author copies (first from CS and second from KDP) they have always come in boxes. Right now book three is at the book designer's so I will soon see how KDP ships 2-4 proof copies. I prefer the POD proof copies to edit. It seems I always catch something to fix with a physical copy than an electronic copy. Maybe one day I will try a full-color book.

    Hey Dale, thanks for this video - it has been very informative! I was wondering if it's possible to publish the same book in different formats, or editions (if you will). If possible, I believe that this could allow the people who could afford the more vivid colors to get those; then also those who are on a budget could also get the book, in a standard edition for a lowered cost. Do you know if this is possible? Looking forward to watching more of your videos soon so I can learn more about self-publishing. Thank you for your time!

    • @DaleLRoberts

      You can, but Amazon won't display all versions on your product page. They generally only support 1 ebook, 1 paperback, 1 hardcover, and 1 audiobook. But, why don't you ask KDP that? Maybe I'm wrong - which I hope I am - and you can get all those product iterations on one page.

  • @lisasims3970
    @lisasims3970 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Thanks for the video. So does KDP automatically print your cover in color or do you have to pay for color ink interior in order to get the cover printed in color as well.

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your cover is full color no matter what, so it's not extra charge. When you go for full color interior, that's when the base print cost significantly increases over the black and white.
      Thankfully, KDP rolled out a print type that's between black and white and premium color that's called standard color. It brings that base cost down a bit from the premium option, but it's more for books that need some full color graphics. Avoid using standard color for image-heavy interiors.
      You know it's so funny that I had wondered the same thing years ago when I first broke into the business using CreateSpace (pre-KDP Print). Ever since, I never heard anyone else ask that question. Ever! That's saying something considering I get thousands of comments. So, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who wondered that.
      Hey, if you have any other questions, Lisa, just drop them in any of my videos, even if it's out of context from the content. I'm happy to help!

      It's fairly accurate. Keep in mind, all books are printed off at different printers throughout each region. So, it may be slightly different, but we're talking by a fraction. If you use no bleed, you won't notice it so much. If you use bleed, you might notice a slight deviation. Readers won't know the difference.

    I'm interested in your thoughts on choosing the KDP full-color option for a B&W coloring book solely for the thicker paper stock even though it would be more costly. In this video, you mentioned that the pages were felt sleek but I assume it's from all the ink on the page. Wonder if a B&W book printed with the full color option would have some sort of spray fixative on it which would affect the way a crayon/colored pencil/marker would take to the page. Thin paper is such an issue with POD coloring books that I wonder if the answer would be to choose the full color option for better quality. Thanks :)

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the paper stock that is glossy, not the ink. I wouldn't recommend it for coloring, because crayons would have a tough time sticking. Colored pencils and markers would definitely be an issue. Have you looked into Blurb yet? They have thicker paper stock options.

    I have two questions about printing full-color with KDP that I hope you can clarify from your video and comments...
    1) I wish to print some graphic novels through KDP. Is this theoretically possible? The question was raised below, but I was hoping you could explain why, if it’s not (and, if possible... your recommended alternative options.)
    2) to just doublecheck, if my trim cut is on 8.5 x 11 and I’m printing with bleed, does that mean extending the canvas size to 8.625 x 11.25?
    Thank you kindly for your time.

    Dale, I am close to self publishing a written book with KDP. I will include some photos, but the main bulk of the work is text. So, it seems the best option is to print in black and white, and then, in the kindle version ebook I will have those photos as colour. My question is, when I upload my pdfs for the print book, do i need to upload black and white photos? or will KDP automatically convert the image into black and white for printing? thank you.

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't have to have the photos in grayscale, but it's a good idea to convert them to grayscale. That way there's no loss in resolution or increase in contrast. Typically, they'll convert the color images to grayscale, but it'll usually get completely saturated and far too dark while having pixelation. Run a proof copy and check. If it's too much loss in quality for your liking, then convert the color images for print.

Paper that was used was thinner and lighter than was used by my local printer and the colours were not rather ‘eased out’ and not as vibrant. Also, I do cartoon strips in book form, and have always been completely satisfied with the results from KDP. Their colour printing is excellent but you have to watch your wholesale cost. I know you use Gimp and after seeing one of your vids I downloaded it because I don't have photoshop. Now gimp doesn't have CMYK output and I can't find separate + for Mac and gimp 2:10 anywhere. Did you upload files in Cmyk through another program. Or what happens if we upload in RGB. What about Gus book? Was it from uploaded CMYK files? Keep up the good work bud.

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used RGB with no issue.
      Though after I had recent experience with doing a cover for Barnes & Noble Press in CMYK, I’m strongly considering the change to that. I’m thinking Inkscape can do CMYK, but I might be way off.
      Full disclosure: I’m 100% a newb when it comes to doing full color kids books. I’d merely did it to test the waters and share my experience.
      So, any mistakes I made happened through simply doing. Hence why I saw how much different CMYK quality is to RGB. I didn’t know any of that if hard pressed. B&N Press schooled me on that and frankly, I just hired a cover designer to figure all that out. Haha
      Thanks for the subbing. Make sure you catch my interview with John Celestri - legendary animator of He-Man, Dragon’s Lair and more. He’s my recent go-to for when I have questions about more art-based kid’s books.

Using this option would force the price of the book too high and leave little profit to be made. It appears that Amazon doesn't want authors to publish in color. The cost that I have to sell my book at in color is 25$ with only a $2.64 royalty, but taking away the color would take away from a viewers experience. Any way around that? I've noticed my chapter titles are colored blue from my word document setting them as a title, but that's unnecessary really. Should I do black and white, even if it means they don't get the full character viewership experience at least at first?
    Edit: In black and white, my book comes out at 13.99 with a better royalty, which saves the buyer 11$, with the con of no color for character sketches. Hi, do you know - is premium color interior white paper suitable for coloring books?

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, the glossy paper is tough for taking crayons, markers and pencils.

      @@DaleLRoberts Thank you! You helped me a lot. Nobody was able to answer my question.

      @@Artur-vh3nk yeah, I’ve got a few full color books, and though the paper COULD work for those purposes, it’s not ideal. You’ll most likely get low reviews.

    How many pages are there in theses books?

      I can’t recall off the top of my head. It’s in the product details for each book. Search them up on Amazon for your answer.

    I did my first book in color and it's expensive. I've sold a few though. You know the one.

      Nice! Do you kick the price up at all? I have one coffee table book that is a bit higher and pulls in a nice chunk of change per sale.

      @@DaleLRoberts I haven't touched it in almost a year. I made one correction after a friend told me I attributed a Korean Dress to the Japanese. After that, hands off. Should I raise the price? I think it's expensive as is, but I only make about $3 per sale.

    Full-color books just set the table for everyone else to have dinner as paper, ink and print profits eat all the profits unless you are selling books for $99.00 for large photo books.
    They also don't have landscape hard covers oddly.

    • @DaleLRoberts

      Yep. KDP was originally developed to publish regular old books. So, anything beyond that is makeshift at best until Amazon acknowledges it and decides it's worth throwing money at.

    How do you feel about full color novels?

    • @DaleLRoberts
      @DaleLRoberts  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It makes sense if it's a graphic novel, but I'm not sure that a full-length novel needs full-color. Look into Bookvault, they do split publishing where you can have full color pages mixed with black and white.

      I would think so if you choose color printing. You should reach out to them to confirm though.
