In this episode we begin the process of fixing everything wrong with Connie Celica, our 1977 Toyota Celica, including replacing the worn out ring & pinion in the differential with a brand new Toyota ring & pinion set, swapping in a fresher transmission with better synchros, reducing the rear spring rates to try to improve ride quality, and installing a Radium Engineering fuel cell and surge tank to fix the fuel starvation issues caused by the unbaffled OE tank. Plus we treat the old girl to an amazing set of TRD Tosco inspired wheels made by Augment Wheel Co.

We (gear installers) recommend thinning the marking compound down before applying so you can get a better read. And you need to heavily amplify the "load" you're putting on it, and rotate that gear multiple revolutions with that load, not just a quick forward and back. Ideally, Just take that third member to a shop that specializes in this stuff. Ring and pinion stuff is less DIY than an engine rebuild.
I just rebuilt my R180 STI diff with a Cusco LSD and bearings, pinion, and ring. As a noob it was a great learning experience, as a noob it was days of pain!
I'm glad to see Celica back on the channel. This is the car that first turned me to tune into your channel.
The original Celica videos from years ago are what introduced me to the channel and I've been a voracious consumer ever since. I think this project is probably the best of any car series on the web; which is a bold statement, but I'll stand by it. I can't believe I have to buy a Radium cell now, what a piece of art!
I think Sarah's car is nicer, personally.
I know master techs who’ve tried to do pinions and just end up taking them to the pros when they whine too much - kudos to you guys for taking that on!
In the old fuel cap area, you can install a deutsch connector for a battery mender. Makes it easy to keep the car charged up and gives the fuel cap a new purpose.
Omg I was about to start typing this - awesome!
I see a Connie video. I click sit down like instantly and watch. ❤
3SGE is love, 3SGE is life ❤
I’m a 3S-GTE guy for twenty-five years now.
Hey, I have an idea, maybe consider the rear filler set up on a stock tail panel from the other year filler panel. It would be a way cleaner set up and easier to install to that beautiful tank. And you would only have to flap the panel down to fill instead of opening the trunk every time….good luck! Connie looks great!
Dave getting his hands dirty in a video... a rare sight!
Thank you, wheel and tire so much better than the stretch!!!
Always brings a smile to my face with the human torque wrench sounds on the diff plugs.
The first song matches Connie’s vibe perfectly, editor Chan is definitely a fellow OG GRan Turismo fan
Really love to see Connie get some tweaks. Great looking wheels
He did an excellent job on that diff. Perfection over speed any time. Might as well make it perfect
Finally, the Celica is back!.
I enjoyed this episode. Seemed to have a different style than usual. Looking forward to the driving episodes.
My buddies dad has a 77 notchback Celica ST in his backyard. Factory yellow with the same 6x9 speakers on the rear dash that he had in high school. It's a time machine that he refuses to part with haha
The celica looks awesome.
Thank you for the support!!
Loved the little Timelapse of getting Connie over to the lift lol
I see Connie... I click... especially if I see Toscos
Finally Connie is back!
This is a top tier build, well done! That said, I think Sarah's 2UZ swapped 1974 Celica is actually going to be a step up from this one. Channel is Sarah-n-tuned. She's been building hers for a couple years and it is now just about complete. She really went crazy on that car and I mean crazy in the best way possible. It is a very good OEM+ build. You guys should race when she gets it done lol.
Always look forward to my Saturday mornings with Speed Academy 🤝
smooth jazz and Connie go so well together! 😆
Dash cams front and rear should be a standard in every new vehicle on the market.
my dream is a celica gt four st205. Tried to import one last year but insurance is too expensive here in toronto for rhd cars.
Filling up your "trunk" at the gas station is for sure a way to get looks 😂
i hope you put a grommet around the fuel feed line going to the engine. right now the hose is just pressed against the metal cutout in the trunk floor. wouldn't want your fuel line to chafe.
Yep. From experience.
Fuel spraying everywhere in a hot engine bay on a 35degC day. Very scary.
Men I like this Celica, amazing build
This wheels looks amazing, both
One of my favorite build of you guys
Props on rebuilding that rear end when you didn’t really need to Dave. I did the same on my truck and I will never do it again lol
Really love the update on Connie! My -76 Celica is getting a bmw e90 front and rearsubframe upgrade as we speak. Going to get som e of that independent rear and modern geometry going on in my build :)
Now we’re talking. The earliest car I can remember liking was my mom’s 1977 GT Liftback in white.
Glad she’s back
Great video! Love the gas tank and wheels can’t wait to see it on the the Dino and track!
That fuel cell install is nice 👌
Absolutely love those new wheels!
Dave I’m right in the middle of doing the same for a spare S2k diff. I feel your pain
Love Radium, don't love the price. Just a pair of rails and hoses for my Baja was nearly $800.
Beautiful car and although i loved the previous wheels, these new ones are pretty mint!
Love your work guys
amazing build
love the build!
Augment wheel we need an update on the twin turbo Ls powered 911. ( This means you Dan🤬🤣😱).
Yeah, it is overdue... It has been under the knife for the better part of the year. Things may have got out of hand....again.
@@danpye8633 The process is worth a video. They are not called ”finished cars “they are called “Project cars !!”
Most hilarious background music ever
I Hope some e34 m5 content is coming soon from looking at 4:01😂
digging the music
David please tell me where you got the Beams shirt!! I love it. I have 3SGE beams Altezza and that shirt looks awesome!
Why was the tank fitted in that orientation?
If it was rotated so the surge tank was nearer the back seat the filler and other things would possibly have been neater
I jusy bought a grandma special 91 ls400 as a daily, if you guys believe in the dashcam from today i will buy it
New wheels are nice, not sure how good they’ll be for brake temps though!
I have been building gears for a long time and the pattern def needs to be more centered and have an ovaled pattern not a horizon pattern. it will make noise
You should put a grommet on that fuel line where it goes back out of the trunk underneath the car. Love the car. Would not want to see a video about a fire.
Dave, do you know the whereabouts of your LS3 S13? I hope it’s living a good life.
Looks great
Feeling pretty good about my decision to always just pay someone to assemble R&Ps…
Such a beautiful car. ❤❤❤❤
Love to see it!
this is a neat car.
Will the lane departure alert know the difference when you are on the 401 and they both the white lines down and the orange ones for construction?? What about tar snakes? I had that issue with the system in my car, so I had to turn that feature off. Now the car actually stays within the lane.
What fluid did you guys put in inside the transmission?
Ridgid tools?! What happened to the milwaukee??
Whoogh those wheels
10:18 Bio Torque Wrench
Why would you need a dash cam on a car you never drive? Oooooooooooo burn. lol.
Just messing around with you guys. Thank you for making Saturdays a lazy day.
Battery next to the fuel tank :x
Could the tank not be rotated 90°?
That wheel setup is what you call brake cookers. 😬
Your videos are always so high quality and heartfelt. Thank you for your talented creativity!👙🛵❣️
Purdy wheels 👌
Thank you for not liking stretched tires, man that is my biggest pet peeve it is the ugliest thing ever
Your talent knows no bounds! Thank you for your creativity and dedication.⛳️⚽️😽
E34❤
😊
Selleeekkahh
Ce li ca wtf never heard it pronounced like that
New wheels are cool and all, but the Works are WAAAAAYYYYYY more of a vibe! Should've just rebuilt those to a wider spec instead brotha 🤷♂️ And then you don't even show us what it looks like on the ground?!?! Guys please don't turn into "those guys".....So aggravating when channels do that and don't just get stuff done and show us the finished product. Part if the reason why I watch smaller TH-camrs now that have that grind and hustle in em and wanna really bring quality, in depth, lengthy videos to their viewers 🙄
Put stock tank back. This is pointless. And think about it filling up is a mess.
first FTW
EV swap it 👌
