This is a great project to make, and I hope you enjoy making this, as well as watching along. Thought I would leave a bit more information on the strap sizes when making a square raised belt along with some examples:
Backing strap: this is the finished width of your belt (mine was 1 1/4"/ 32 mm as that is how I like my own belts to be), this will need to be about 2mm thick.
Top strap: this is going to be the top outer side of your belt, you want to add at least 3/8" / 9 mm to this but if you are just starting out then 1/2" / 12 mm is good, and we want this to be ideally 0.8 - 1mm thick
Filler: this can be taken from a scrap piece after splitting, this will need to be 3/8" /9mm narrower than your main belt will be and about 2 mm thick - for a more pronounced raise, you can go a bit thicker.
End chape: this is the same width as your final belt and can be split to 3 mm thick.
    Width examples: 1 1/4" / 32mm made up belt will need: 1 1/4" / 32mm backing piece and end chape, 1 3/4" / 44 mm top strap, 7/8" / 23 mm filler.
    Hope that all makes sense.
    Jo

@J.H.Leather - Thank you for your well explained tutorial.
Questions about the top piece of leather. Assuming the bottom piece is veg tan leather …
Can the top piece of the belt be from chrome tan leather?
Will a top piece of chrome tan shape well around the filler?
How should one shape a top piece of chrome tan nicely around the filler?
Do you recommend using veg tan for the top piece?

Would you be able to make a video on how to care, clean up and sharpen your tools? I've bought a load of tools to start me off practicing but many need a bit of tlc and I don't know where the start particularly. It would be fab if you could make a video as you are very informative and easy to follow in your teachings.

Jo will probably respond to this herself cos she's awesome like that! But if you check out her play list there is one called Tool Time and another called Tools and Tool Maintenance, both have tutorials on sharpening various tools!
Also if you are a new comer to the channel I would highly recommend checking out past videos anyway ☺️

I didn't think making a belt could be so complicated, but there you go. The end result seems worth all your effort. Not sure if I would have your patience. Great work!

Very nice belt! Except I'm a guy , that doesn't look good in pink. But I'm eventually going to make a similar belt in all black , or brown. Cheers from Canada

I really agree with the managing of thread length. Having stitched a single thread around a 42-inch belt, you spend a lot more time pulling the thread and untangling messes than anything. Using a double arm's length is far more efficient.

    • @JHLeather
      @JHLeather  ปีที่แล้ว +1

For sure! So much more efficient and the threads end up nicer when shorter anyway 👍

@@JHLeather Howdy! I am more inclined towards tapered belts, coz I mostly try to use a 1inch buckle on 35mm wide strap..Is it possible to make a video on making the same pattern but with a tapered cut?? Many thanks! Id love to ask questions may be in a discord session!
