I love this. I"m so tempted to order those vials and make these boxes. OCD is kicking in! lol I currently organize my seeds by time of year the seeds should be planted. So if I did this, one box would be spring planting seeds. Love your spreadsheet idea. Thanks for sharing this!
Like the seed boxes! Another good idea to reduce the cost is to find a friend that has a medical prescription that they must refill monthly or bimonthly. Have them collect the medicine vials for you and recycle them for this project.
Another option for a container, use the empty prescription containers. It's tinted to keep lights out, but inside the box will definitely be dark. The only thing I can think of,,would it seal well with these plastic prescription containers. Probably not, but baby jars might do better option. Love your seed boxes, and a great way to organized your seeds quickly. Most of all a spreadsheet with more details about your collection is a BIG plus too! Thanks for sharing your idea! :)
good Idea. I saved about 150 AOAP air tight bottles from the army. large enough for about 4 ounces of fluid. never used. so I took them for saving seeds.
Nice system - i think i will try it - i've made bird and animal nesting boxes also by constructing the closed box then cutting in too halves (for a sloping lid) Also made similar boxes but fitted the hinges and catch THEN cut the lid using a fine tenon saw -then add the hinges and catch back on - How did you do the labels for the top of the vials?
Cool! I love how organized it is! I know this is a long shot.... This is exactly what I was looking for to buy for my husband. I will never in this life be able to make something like this. I would love to surprise him with a box like this. And I have not found anything like it in the stores. Would you consider selling one to me?
You mean what wood? Use anything you have. I lined up the holes by dividing the number of holes by the width and then again by the length. You can even just eyeball it or set the vials on the board and draw around them.
a hole saw would make a clean hole and the sets are cheaper than forsner bits. It's a good idea. I would need a set with larger containers for some seeds.
It's true that hole saws are cheaper but you have to stop each time and remove the material from the bit. And with this many holes, it would triple the time. I don't buy really expensive Forstners. I bought a 14 piece set of Irwin bits for only $40 here: amzn.to/2Cp0vQM
Nice job. Last Spring, I finally organized my seeds using photo boxes from a craft store. It took 10 boxes. I organized them like this: Winter / Roots & peas, Winter/Cruciferous & Greens & Herbs, Summer/ Solanancae & Herbs, Summer/ 3 Sister, Winter Saved Seed, Summer Saved Seed, Flowers, Garden Tags/Labels/misc., Forage (for hens), Field crops or bulky pkgs. May I suggest you number vials and put a paper in lid with name, kind of like a box of chocolates. Then, put seed packets in a notebook filled with photo or baseball card sleeves (not sure best size) and file them by number there as well. Possibly also cut out info from a catalog, if it has needed or useful information such as its a tomato that produces in temperatures over 100 degrees F. Again, really nice job. Inspiring.
I do grow them, but not every year. I rotate them so I can keep a fresh stock on hand. For instance I have over 200 tomato varieties but I only grow about 50 different ones every year.
Grow Your Heirlooms I see. I was trying to picture a garden large enough to plant all of those you had. :-) The boxes you made are nice -- something like my grandpa (or great-grandpa) would've made in his younger days.
Hello, Im a new sub, newer to heirloom seed growing as well. Just today I ran out a bought a plastic container for my few seeds, totally didnt work. I really need to find some organizing ideas. Love what youve done, thanks for sharing!
Hi! I was wondering how long your seeds have been lasting, before the viability starts dropping? I would love to do this system, but my organic farmer says that seeds won’t last long unless their in a glass jar.
Every seed type is different. I have germinated 25 year old tomato and corn seeds. But onions only last 1-2 years. As for glass jars, I never seal them like that. If there is any bit of moisture, it will seal it in and the seeds will rot.
I love your videos, I've only been gardening for a couple of years but have been interested in starting to save seeds, what temperature should you store seeds at?
That is very nice and organized and just looks good. Why don't you make them for sale. I would buy one, if I could afford the price. I love that you explained how to make one but I don't have any of those tools you mentioned yadda, yadda, yadda lol. Just a thought, great workmanship. Thanks for sharing. Oh I was also wondering if you could stain the boxes and if that would harm the seeds; thinking of off gassing etc? God Bless Janice
Great project! I have been wanting to do something similar for seed storage. I found aluminum vials but I like the ones you have...may I ask where you got them?
Healthy and Loving Life I just searched Amazon and there are tons. Mine came from a friend but they are everywhere. Just order the right sizes. Some come with flip lids and some are removable like mine.
Wait you mean most people don't just hit record and start talking :) with no idea what they will say :) I knew i was doing something wrong. Great design. I thought it was funny i could not figure out how you did the inside wood. I thought it was 1 solid piece of wood. Instead of 2 or 4. Glad you went over that :)
Nice box... But, I'm wondering how do you get around the issue of the moisture in the wood getting into your seeds? If the little bottles are what I think the are, they're not really waterproof, rather moisture proof. Also, do you put any kind of moisture control packets or devices inside the box with the seeds? I use a cheap plastic toolbox I got from Walmart, which I stuffed the rubber padding that you put around your house doors to stop drafts; I stuffed the rubber inside the groove of the box and the lid (to keep air and light out) and I placed a SmartDry 100 (used to keep moisture out of safes) inside the box, to dry up any moisture that I let inside the box when I open the box to look at or store more seeds. The SmartDriy 100 (made by MaxxDry) has a little window in it where you can see the silica and how moist it is depending on what color the silica has turned (blue, purple or red). The unit also has a built in heater and comes with a power plug, so when the silica turns red (silica cant pull any more moisture out of the air) you just plug the unit in a wall socket to dry out the silica; no need to place it in an oven or microwave to dry it out. Then you let it cool off and place where you were using it. MaxxDry claims that you can get 700 reheats out of the unit and the silica; which should last me a lifetime. I bought a bunch of these little units that were on clearance at Fred Myers for $3 each to place in my gun safes and would you know, they also are small enough to fit perfect in my little seed storage box. By mistake, I left one of the units outside over the winter; so it got rained and snowed on for a year; the silica was red! I just plugged it in overnight, checked it the next morning to see that the silica had turned back to light blue, let it cool down and placed it in my gun safe. No need to put it in the oven to dry out the silica like you do with the packets or gel. thanks for the video...
Kenneth Elston I do know moisture has never been a problem. I suppose a person could use silica packs if they need to. It's just never been an issue for me. Your method seems easy and inexpensive too.
This is so cool! I would love to have something like this but there is no way I could ever make something like this. Not only do I not have the tools but I don't have the know how. I know nothing about woodworking and all that kind of stuff and some of the words you were using I don't even know what they mean.
LOL... I saw your old video a few days ago and inspired me to sort out my seed packets to various categories.. it's driven me nuts for 2 years.. so yesterday I did it... but tossed like lettuce seeds in 1 bag, etc and so on. I have tons of seeds of many things.... your new method would be more confusing for me than everything tossed in a huge bag like I had. lol. I'm not ADD btw... lol. But kudos on the product/cases you made. I did buy some plastic containers thinking along as your old video minus cue cards for the year since I remember and dates stamped on envelopes and what I've saved, but quickly discovered those take more room in fridge than using bags. No wasted money... I always need containers for leftovers etc.
BTW... Home depot and perhaps Lowes will cut all of those sized to piece or can do it yourself with their equipment for free. I've heard many years they do it, but never took them up on it, however they had cut using the strength of their hand cutting a large amount of copper pipe in pieces for me. I tried to stop a guy once but he insisted to continue. Saved my hands and from buying a tool (s) to do it myself. You went macho with that tool sawing bit there. hehehe
Nice video and a good way to organize seeds! Now I know what to do with all those hundreds of coin tubes (vials) I I have collecting dust and taking up space from when I used to be a coin collector ! Thank you!
But shouldnt you keep your "seed vault" in another location? Like a freezer or a cooling room? Making the seeds last longer will make it much more important.
Great job on the seedboxes I really like that idea its awesome but I wouldn't suggest using the table saw at the last part of the video how to cut the lid off the box doesn't sound safe.
Thanks and yes you're right it doesn't sound safe. But that's how all the pros make perfect fitting boxes. It does seem like it's dangerous but if you're careful, the lids fit like a glove this way. Believe it or not, I didn't lose any fingers which is a miracle for me. LOL
Thanks, but I don't think people would want to buy them as they can make their own. Also shipping would be huge. Okay, there's also the laziness factor LOL
+FrankEdavidson The idea is to make your own box... and a box is a box is a box... You want them moisture proof, light proof, bug proof and easy to use and organize. Wanting these exact box is a very nice compliment to the maker but is also asking for something a little bit luxurious for its need. Labor time for production. 80 holes with a Fostner bit is not far from 1/4hour of work that alone. Labor time and cost for tool maintenance. The tools we have also ask for big power consumption as well. This nice little project, with aprox. 40$ of material (80 bottles at 30cents is 24$) for 1 box but having it done by a woodworker in his shop would bring the price to about 65$ for one single box (without bottles). Want ten of them then it could go to maybe 45$ each. I take orders and ships from canada, if anyone really wants to pay. I believe there is someone in asia that can make them for dirt cheap. Look in dollar stores, I believe they have small wooden boxes there.
They look nice. much better than my cardboard boxes. Cost is material and time you've got the material cost low what is the time? You could start selling these.
i use 25cent and fifty cent coin tube which comes with the holder and spaced perfectly.there are 100 tubes to a box.give it a try.and save a lot of time.can still make your own wood cases.
I'm sure this is totally off point but what you said about what the boxes look like I grew up dirt poor on a farm and now 49 years in and I myself wouldn't want life any other way I mean yeah it can have set backs but WOW do I have perspective on most things but to the point 👉 I thought at first glance they looked like you just bought them. But I think you smart for making them yourself if it was actually cheaper than purchasing the same thing 👍🎯💯✅‼️‼️

I share your concern Naomi - especially important if you collect your own seeds as you could be trapping moisture in the vial as well - interesting though, commercial seeds are well sealed (some in foil) so maybe they don't have to breathe and are well dried - I mostly buy seed and store until used up a few seasons later so maybe this is good for that situation
Great storage/organizing system. Thanks for sharing! Are your little seed viles made of glass or plastic? FYI: “anyway” is an adverb and adverbs are always singular. No such word as “anywayS.”
"Anyways" is colloquial slang and perfectly acceptable. I've never been accused of being too professorial. As for the viles, they are plastic. The link is in the description

You must have a garden the size of Kansas with all those seeds!!! LOL

Well done mate. Very thorough in your presentation and a fantastic way to store seeds.

Thanks. The green coffee cup is handmade from Alaska. No lead in that cup. :-)
this is a cool xmas present idea. Thanks for sharing the first 9 mins that I watched!
Great idea, I will make one to store the beads for my daughters beading projects
I don't have place for tablesaw, I was thinking about cutting it apart with a japanese saw. They seems to be ideal for this job.
Link for the labels are in the description. I just ran them through my inkjet printer
Love this, looks like it took a long time to do, guess I better get started. Thanks, this is great.
Hi from Medford! :) How do you label the vial tops? Do you have a source for the vials? Recommend any local gardening groups? Thanks for sharing! :)
A link to where you can buy the vials and the labels I use are in the description under the video. For local gardening groups, ask around at RCC.

I would love to surprise him with a box like this. And I have not found anything like it in the stores. Would you consider selling one to me?
If there is a MakerSpace in your area, show up with this video. They'll (most likely) show you how to make this box, and have the tools you need
Wondering if you were selling these or where I can purchase as I dont have any of the machines to make
I don't sell them sorry. But you don't need the boxes. Just keep your seeds in the vials without the box.
Would love to buy one of the big ones
very nice job. what temp/humidity is best to store?
My seeds are kept around 60-65 deg F. With respect to humidity, the lower the better.
Thank you for your reply. Is 37 F too cold (fridge)?
I did not see what you cut the inner part of the box from and how you lined up all the holes?
You mean what wood? Use anything you have. I lined up the holes by dividing the number of holes by the width and then again by the length. You can even just eyeball it or set the vials on the board and draw around them.

Yes, they will hold larger seeds. Didn't look for glass vials

Thanks. I did the plastic tub a while back but never was great. I'm kind of OCD when it comes to organizing. LOL
I really like this idea! I think instead of buying vials I will just use old prescription medication bottles. My family has 100 of them lying around.
That would work
Very nice and organized......

Thanks. It took me years to finally organize my seeds. I'm a procrastinator. LOL

How would you label the seeds? Also the seeds could become jumbled if the box is dropped while open
