I have my seeds organised by month they will be planted. Each month is in zip lock bags and placed in plastic shoe box with dividers for each month and a little tray in the box too with marker pens and labels
Love it, Eli! I use the same box as yours (with the colours) and it has simplified my seed storage since I joined the "we have too many seeds" club 😂 the second box you have would also help for succession sowing. Once you've shown those seeds for one month, you can shift the seed packet over to the next time they need sown instead of putting them back in their other box. I love your alternative, as well. My first seed storage was very basic and got out of hand really quickly, so I was glad to see your solution way back.
Excellent video, Eli! I'm one of those people with a ridiculous amount of seeds, so when I set them up by planting week, it looks like an old-fashioned library card catalog!
I’m fairly new to gardening & came across your vlogs 😊 I have been watching & really enjoying all your tips & I’ve ordered my green house which is how I came across you , Thankyou for sharing I’ll be catching up as well as following yourself & Kate
Fantastic video ... as always 😍😍😍 The joy when 'Santa' bought me 1 of your 'Seed storage' boxes ... how Ive loved organising it etc ... ( this was after Id lost a few packets of seeds to dampness ) ... its a great system & what a brilliant idea to have a 2nd box & put it in to 'months of seeding' ... this is just what I need ... Thank you 😘😘😘🌷🌷🌷🌻🌻🌻🌻
You are BRILLIANT!!! I'm a new gardener and only moved in to my house (with garden) here in NW Turkey 4 months ago. In order to get ready I bought quite a few seeds on different occasions, put them in various safe places and now can't find half of them! Will buy my boxes tomorrow 👍. Thank you so much for all your help and inspiration.
C’est ma première année que je vais utiliser la fameuse valise! J’ai classé par mois, et j’ai aussi collé une étiquette sur la façade pour faire la liste du contenants. Je trouve ça pratique. Je verrai à long terme. Pour l’instant, une valise suffit mais on verra. J’avais une petite boîte avec des toutes petites boîte style « Tic-Tac », c’est trop petit. Votre classement est, pour moi, le meilleur! 🤣😂🤣
Wonderful to watch, Eli, thank you very much. I happen to have the same boxes as you, two of them, each with the coloured inner boxes, but mine are sorted, one box Vegetables, the other Flowers, in alphabetical order. The big BUT is, it doesn’t really work….. From tomorrow, it’s all going to change. I think your ideas for use of the boxes is BRILLIANT. Thank you so very much 😊
Your box for March and April is going to be bursting! 😄 I store my seeds by month of sowing as well, and move the packet to the next month (or return to same month) for succession sowing. I love the system because it helps keep me from forgetting to sow something in the right month. Not that that has EVER happened before. I have a filing system right now, with dividers by month and just slot my seeds in there. I have a separate one for ornamentals. I am hoping to invest in a new box though. I keep them in the pantry, which is cool all year round (and fridge cold in winter) and dark. And I totally relate to seeds falling through the letterbox. I ordered some today. I couldn't help myself. I got annoyed that I couldn't find a petunia mix that I liked so I ordered Calibrachoa Million Bells instead. I've not grown them before, but the colours look soooo pretty. The things we do when we have 5 minutes to drink tea while browsing seed websites on our phones. 🙄 Love and hugs from down south xx

I love your organisers! I'm eyeing them up on Amazon..... I'm doing a similar thing just in shoe boxes, but I do have a lot of seeds. I'm hoping to set up a 'seed swap station' in my library as I know there are a lot of keen gardeners and allotment holders around, and it will assuage my guilt of having millions of magazine freebie seeds that I don't want or can't find space for. Thanks for another great video. :)

One other enemy of not storing in water proof containers is varmints. For me, mice got into sunflower seeds after several purchases if I did not immediately put in proper mouse proof storage. Nice one 👍 I do a similar system with my seed just different containers 🙂 seems to work well so far. Do forget to sort through your seeds every now and then to keep them tidy and spot those forgotten seeds at the bottom of the stack!
I did that last month. I thought I didn't have a tomatoe variety that I really wanted to grow and lo and behold there was an old packet which had about 5 seeds stuck in a corner. It is a heritage variety so will be doing some seed saving
I have the same photo boxes for many years. Initially, I just used them for photos and my scrabook stuff. I have my seeds divided between spring & summer and fall & winter. I do like that you have done them by month.
@In the Garden with Eli and Kate I am going to give it a chance to do it monthly and see what happens. I see structure, and I really like that. Besides my seasonal seeds. I have a long growing season, so this might help me.
The take away containers is a genius idea. I have a small wooden chest - nice looking one - but inside I have freezer bags, a bloody mess of freezer bags. Hopefully, the take away containers will help to conquer the mess. Are you planning another video on greenhouse cleaning (as you are so organised you must have already done it). I have a Rhino too and in some areas is getting a bit grubby and I would like to know your tricks
Came across a video of yours about organising the greenhouse and progressed to this after another video in which you showed how you store seeds in these photo boxes. I've clicked on the link below this video but the Amazon page says your influencer store isn't active. Not sure if you're aware? (I've only just come across your videos after a TH-cam hiatus of several months - i was spending too much time on it!! - so if you've said elsewhere why your affiliation (is that the right term?) isn't working, I do apologise.) I too have far too many seed packets spilling out all over the place, so a couple of these seed storage cases will be a godsend. Thank you for posting!
Hey 😁 Yeah we don’t run the Amazon stuff anymore but TH-cam don’t have a way for us to go through all the old videos and edit the links out. The seed box is actually a photo storage box. You can get them on Amazon but a lot of craft stores do them too.
I use lunch bags to separate my seeds, but don't seal them just in case of moisture. I also save the silca packs from when I purchase clothes or shoes and add them into the bags.
I found you channel last week and have been binge watching you since. I have the same seed storage system as you. However, I do put the seed packets that I opened up but did not use them all into a clear small plastic bag. I have had seeds spill out. I'm now looking at a tomato surprise packet. I'm not sure what I'm going to get. 😂
I have the same system of yours with 2 boxes but I also have a stainless steel autoclave box which I got when a hospital was selling them off, perfect. But they are still all full. Seedaholic 😃
Great video! My seeds are sorted by type of seed, kind of like your first box. Then, to know what to sow when, I have an Excel document that is sorted by month and even with columns that lets me know what should be sown beginning, middle or end of each month. In my boxes and in the document there are only seeds that "have a job", ie I am planning to sow them this season. The rest are taken out to be passed on to someone else (seeds for perennial are the exception). In this way, I do not need the 2nd box and the document gives me space to take notes.
I do almost pretty much the same one box for the seeds by type then the other one for the next 4-6 weeks rather than organising for the whole year. That way I can put something like salads in the first one and then once sowed move the packet to the box 2 or 3 weeks ahead so I know to sow again for succession sowing. Then the seeds I sow continuously throughout the year just keeping moving down the chain.
a few other folk have mentioned that one too Steve, seems to be popular. I've just been putting the succession sowing ones in a separate container, but I may need to rethink this.
Eli, as usual, you made me smile. I love your idea of having seeds sub-organized by month! I plan to use index cards for each month with the intended crops listed. (My studio apartment is the size of a postage stamp, so space is always an issue!) The index cards will dovetail nicely with my garden journaling and since my budget does not allow for ordering seeds all at once, my alphabetized seeds will remain in one place so I can double check for duplicates. Experiments, organization, problem solving... These are the things I like best about your channel, but wait! There is also the amusement factor! I have gotten several excellent ideas from you as well. What's not to love about your channel?
ohhh I really like that, makes it very easy to sort, I just have a metal box just now where I out all my seeds in the season I want them planted, I think I would prefer to be more organised like yourself ... thanks
I've been using ziplock freezer bags too, they can be laid in line inside a sealable box. You just label the bags with a marker. I also jot the dates and viability times on the front of individual packets. This method is quick, efficient, and cheap. When seeds are older, I expect lower germination rates and sow mored densely.
I have the clear photo boxes (thanks to you!). For my flowers I label them by height range, so if I need something tall for the back of the border I don't have to rummage through the small ones. Separate one for trailing plants for baskets. They're all beautifully organised, and yet I still need more 🤣
Oh, that's a good idea. I have mine orgnaised by area of the garden. So, full sun, part shade, shade and pots, baskets and wall planters. But in that, I could do height as well, that would be really useful!
You are right, organizing seeds is important, especially if you have a big garden. I started out in a small cardboard box, and by year 3 it was a mess. I got one of those photo cases with the colored sections like you have and its great. But I am also into saving seed. I try to buy seeds of a variety only once. Being older I have a few prescriptions, the bigger empty bottles are great for bulk storage of seeds if you wash them out, like 1000 Zinnia seeds or Beans. Now I only have to find a way to organize the bottles.
Oh the bottles are a good idea I have a million of those little brown envelopes (left overs from making wedding favours) and I’ve used them for storing seeds, stupidly left them in the greenhouse over winter and they got damp 😢
I got my box when a cardmaking co was closing their physical store. I store all my seeds by sowing month but like your system better. I did get a box for my hubby to store work tool bits and pieces so think I may grab it lol
@@eliandkate The boxes were half price so I got 4 - one for my crafting supplies, one for my seeds, one for my hubby and one for my daughter. Hubby has said he isn't using his yet so it's now my second box. 😀 I have over 160 seed packs so this is very much needed. Can I ask if you know how many you have?
@@eliandkate I just organized by months and which need to be started indoors vs direct seed and my brain is happy now. Such a simple yet super helpful tip!
Excellent, thanks for the ideas! I got a photo box for Christmas and started off organising by month but had the issue of too many being in the spring months so it was bursting at the seams… so I completely reorganised it to by vegetable & flower type like your rainbow one. Great idea to have both methods hand in hand though, I think I’ll collect some takeaway boxes now to do the months alongside!!!
Love the extra boxes labelled by months. That has been an issue for me. That is part of my unorganized organized. I have seeds organized but take out the ones that I am going to plant and use sticky notes of when I will sow them. Have missed sowing times because the notes fall off or the packets get put where I miss them.
Oh this is great Eli. I've got the photo box and I've been looking for another but wowsers the price has nearly doubled. I will for sure be doing solution #2 for my monthly organization. Thank you!
I have the same box except I have 3. I have a serious seed buying problem lol but I also have lots of beans and peas and as ypu mentioned those seeds are quite large. Mostly I buy too much though.
Hi Eli, I have take away boxes but they are twice a big. They are great , but I would like it better for them to be smaler. So I can orgenize better and get more into the space they are in. I like the idea about the months. I normaly pik the seeds for this year and put them in a extra box , I was thinking to seperate them with cardbord. Hm.. maybe I still have some Tupperware that would fit better. Great video. Thanks 🙂
Absolutely love it! I've actually separated mine into months a few days ago . But because I wanted to harvest at different times I split them into envelop to how many I'm going to start at what stage which will be monthly to make it easier. I'm going to challenge myself to use the seeds I already have unless I've ran out already. (This is what happens when you have a bad back and can't get out and do what you want to in the garden lol)
@@eliandkate oh yes I like it. Was worried I was getting ocd with my seeds though 🤣 now I know I'm normal over enthusiastic gardener. You are brilliant and love how funny you both are x
I have a similar system, but I use lots of metal seed boxes that people have gifted me.. my stairs will never be clear.. too many boxes of seeds.. we all have a problem 😂
Finally got the same case with the boxes a few weeks ago. Really enjoyed organising my seeds. I also saved the little silicone packets that came out of the covid tests we used to have to do and save them from packages etc to put in each box. Is this ok to do?
Hi Eli great video, i have the same boxes and i too kind of buy seeds that suddenly appear in my gardening shops online as discounts like 99p a packet you know that type of thing, then i end up with too many and some of the same type. What i do with mine is new seeds in one box and open seeds that have been used in another box, so when i go to plant say Carrots and Onions i check the open packet box first to seed if there are any in there, if not then i go to the new seeds box and see if i bought a new packet and put it in there. It works for me. By the way where did you buy your greenhouse lights from? i remember watching the video, but i can't find it to check what they were called, can you let me know or which video you mentioned them in, Thanks. Stay Safe both of You. Barry (Wirral)
Thank you for this view it was very helpful. I love the storage box idea. I have bought one and organized my seeds. But where is the best place to store them? Is it ok to leave them in my greenhouse year round or should I store them in my house?
Not these days I did when I was a new gardener but given our small amount of veg growing space we have to be ruthless… we don’t eat enough potatoes to justify it 😀
Completely off subject ... finally got my rised beds insitu ... please can I ask ... should I be filling them with a mixture of top soil & compost... or just compost ? Xxx
@@eliandkate okay nice good to know. i’ve been watching your videos for about an hour now and it’s hard for me to find really engaging people/channels sometimes but you really are engaging so thank you! hopefully getting my own greenhouse soon and want to be as prepared as possible!

It's still full of plants so I haven't yet but I'm desperate to clean it!
It's minging.
- so if you've said elsewhere why your affiliation (is that the right term?) isn't working, I do apologise.)
I too have far too many seed packets spilling out all over the place, so a couple of these seed storage cases will be a godsend. Thank you for posting!
Hey 😁
Yeah we don’t run the Amazon stuff anymore but TH-cam don’t have a way for us to go through all the old videos and edit the links out.
The seed box is actually a photo storage box. You can get them on Amazon but a lot of craft stores do them too.
I use lunch bags to separate my seeds, but don't seal them just in case of moisture. I also save the silca packs from when I purchase clothes or shoes and add them into the bags.
I do the same
I use the silica in my camera kit though
the question below this one i am from ontario canada 🥔
thankyou for answering my question😃
Always 😍😍😍
Same system as me. Works well. Thanks for sharing.
Glad to hear it’s working
I found you channel last week and have been binge watching you since. I have the same seed storage system as you. However, I do put the seed packets that I opened up but did not use them all into a clear small plastic bag. I have had seeds spill out. I'm now looking at a tomato surprise packet. I'm not sure what I'm going to get. 😂
Oh that will be fun come spring 🤣
I have the same system of yours with 2 boxes but I also have a stainless steel autoclave box which I got when a hospital was selling them off, perfect. But they are still all full. Seedaholic 😃
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Great video! My seeds are sorted by type of seed, kind of like your first box. Then, to know what to sow when, I have an Excel document that is sorted by month and even with columns that lets me know what should be sown beginning, middle or end of each month. In my boxes and in the document there are only seeds that "have a job", ie I am planning to sow them this season. The rest are taken out to be passed on to someone else (seeds for perennial are the exception). In this way, I do not need the 2nd box and the document gives me space to take notes.
Ah sounds like my seed sowing plan. I shared the spreadsheet with everyone too 😍
I do almost pretty much the same one box for the seeds by type then the other one for the next 4-6 weeks rather than organising for the whole year.
Awwww glad yours getting so much positivity from the channel Gia
ohhh I really like that, makes it very easy to sort, I just have a metal box just now where I out all my seeds in the season I want them planted, I think I would prefer to be more organised like yourself ... thanks
Over time you can sort the system that suits you 😍
I've been using ziplock freezer bags too, they can be laid in line inside a sealable box. You just label the bags with a marker. I also jot the dates and viability times on the front of individual packets. This method is quick, efficient, and cheap. When seeds are older, I expect lower germination rates and sow mored densely.
Have you tried doing germination tests for older seeds to give you an idea of what to expect, germination wise?
I have the clear photo boxes (thanks to you!). For my flowers I label them by height range, so if I need something tall for the back of the border I don't have to rummage through the small ones. Separate one for trailing plants for baskets. They're all beautifully organised, and yet I still need more 🤣
Oh that’s genius 😍😍😍
Oh, that's a good idea. I have mine orgnaised by area of the garden. So, full sun, part shade, shade and pots, baskets and wall planters. But in that, I could do height as well, that would be really useful!
Awesome isn’t it
You are right, organizing seeds is important, especially if you have a big garden.
Oh the bottles are a good idea
I have a million of those little brown envelopes (left overs from making wedding favours) and I’ve used them for storing seeds, stupidly left them in the greenhouse over winter and they got damp 😢
I got my box when a cardmaking co was closing their physical store. I store all my seeds by sowing month but like your system better. I did get a box for my hubby to store work tool bits and pieces so think I may grab it lol
They are handy boxes aren’t they?
@@eliandkate The boxes were half price so I got 4 - one for my crafting supplies, one for my seeds, one for my hubby and one for my daughter. Hubby has said he isn't using his yet so it's now my second box. 😀 I have over 160 seed packs so this is very much needed. Can I ask if you know how many you have?
Brilliant idea to organize by months!
There’s loads of good ideas for tubs coming out in the comments too
@@eliandkate I just organized by months and which need to be started indoors vs direct seed and my brain is happy now. Such a simple yet super helpful tip!
A happy brain is a good thing
I've also got the same seed box
And the same system or something different?
Excellent, thanks for the ideas! I got a photo box for Christmas and started off organising by month but had the issue of too many being in the spring months so it was bursting at the seams… so I completely reorganised it to by vegetable & flower type like your rainbow one. Great idea to have both methods hand in hand though, I think I’ll collect some takeaway boxes now to do the months alongside!!!
Can’t wait to hear how it goes 😍
Love the extra boxes labelled by months. That has been an issue for me. That is part of my unorganized organized. I have seeds organized but take out the ones that I am going to plant and use sticky notes of when I will sow them. Have missed sowing times because the notes fall off or the packets get put where I miss them.
Oh yeah, I’ve done the exact same thing
I found a bunch of sticky notes down the back of the shelf in the greenhouse today
Oh this is great Eli. I've got the photo box and I've been looking for another but wowsers the price has nearly doubled. I will for sure be doing solution #2 for my monthly organization. Thank you!
They are expensive aren’t they?
I have the same box except I have 3. I have a serious seed buying problem lol but I also have lots of beans and peas and as ypu mentioned those seeds are quite large. Mostly I buy too much though.
Honest as always Cordelia
Too many seeds but I bet you still get a thrill when you buy more
@@eliandkate lol of course I do! I'm still looking for the best tomato variety for my garden!
Thanks 🙂
Go have a rummage in the drawer and see what you have 😍
Absolutely love it!
You say bad back I say circumstances that he’ll you plan and organise 🥰
@@eliandkate oh yes I like it. Was worried I was getting ocd with my seeds though 🤣 now I know I'm normal over enthusiastic gardener. You are brilliant and love how funny you both are x
🥰🥰🥰
i miss that the links aren't available anymore to the products you were using?
Sorry
It was just too much to keep them up to date.
I have a similar system, but I use lots of metal seed boxes that people have gifted me.. my stairs will never be clear.. too many boxes of seeds.. we all have a problem 😂
😂😂😂 oh yup… we’re all the same
But, if successionally sowing when sown in March put the packet in the next month you want to sow in, not in the type box. Just another tip.
I watched the video then posted on Instagram. Sorry Robin hadn't seen your reply on here.
Always best to comment here, that’s what helps the channel 😍😍😍😍
Finally got the same case with the boxes a few weeks ago. Really enjoyed organising my seeds. I also saved the little silicone packets that came out of the covid tests we used to have to do and save them from packages etc to put in each box. Is this ok to do?
That’s a great idea!
Someone else mentioned they do the same thing, think it was Robin from Robin’s Container Garden
Yeah!!!
I absolutely know exactly what you mean Barry 😍
The lights were from Amazon… they are listed in our page (link in video description as always)
Thank you for this view it was very helpful. I love the storage box idea. I have bought one and organized my seeds. But where is the best place to store them? Is it ok to leave them in my greenhouse year round or should I store them in my house?
Somewhere cool and dark is best
@@eliandkate Thank you
Good evening. Once you have moved seeds into month you are sowing what if you are succession sowing do they need to be in more than 1 box. Thanks.
Just move them to the next sowing month 😍
Do u grow fennel? If so how plz.
We don’t no 🤷♀️
Sorry
question do you grow potatoes ????
Not these days
I did when I was a new gardener but given our small amount of veg growing space we have to be ruthless… we don’t eat enough potatoes to justify it 😀
Oooh where did you get the printed labels from Eli?
I made them 😀
@@eliandkate wow that's clever 😀
We have a cricut
It’s awesome
@@eliandkate How does that differ from a cricket? Or a cricut, even.
😂😂😂😂
Autocorrect ruins everything
Completely off subject ... finally got my rised beds insitu ... please can I ask ... should I be filling them with a mixture of top soil & compost... or just compost ? Xxx
A mix is good as they’ll take a lot of just compost
@@eliandkate Thanks very much xx
Hello I’m new here! Where do you buy your seeds from?
I don’t use a single supplier, just whoever has what I want at a good price
@@eliandkate okay nice good to know. i’ve been watching your videos for about an hour now and it’s hard for me to find really engaging people/channels sometimes but you really are engaging so thank you! hopefully getting my own greenhouse soon and want to be as prepared as possible!
Oh new greenhouse time is the most exciting…. Nothing competes 😍😍
Lol. Mine falk out of mailbox too. Hahaha
😂😂😂😂
Probably need to paint the carry case black to block out the sun.
Or white to reflect the heat
3:55 got my answer😂
😂😂😂😂
Tell me this was made last spring... Surely you don't have that growth already 🤥
It was filmed last week.
Is it the Pak Choi and mustards you are thinking are unusual?
😂 you’re maybe new to the channel… this were sown in September last year, I grow all year round, so I sowed a bunch of greens in late Aug/early September to grow and eat through winter.
That’s the last of it all now.
@In the Garden with Eli and Kate more, new to growing 😆. I'm not used to seeing harvest in Feb. Love your channel ❤️
😂😂😂😂 that’s true actually.
Yeah you can relax…. No pressure cause you’d need to jump in your Time Machine and go sow in Aug… but you know, with gas and electric prices you might want to be sparing about using your time machine
