  • Welcome to my channel! In this video, I share my honest reactions and first impressions of Singapore during my first visit. I explore both day and night scenes to give you a comprehensive view of this incredible city.
I also address two questions I've always had about Singapore: Is it possible to travel here on a budget, and is chewing gum allowed, given my mild addiction?
Featured locations in this video include:
Boat Quay - Day and Night Comparison
HSBC Rain Vortex - World's Largest Indoor Waterfall
    Sultan Mosque
    Kampong Glam
    Haji Lane
    McDonald's Price Comparison
    Chinatown - Night Tour
    Dinner With a Local
    And more...
Thank you for your support! Enjoy the video.

I have watched many videos about Singapore filmed by tourists. Very few bothered to talk to the locals. Some walked around for half an hour to 45 minutes looking for a place, or ate at more expensive places, as they did not want to ask around or enquired where to find the cheaper places to eat, i.e. hawker centres; most likely they don't want to interact with the locals, or think the locals cannot speak English despite the fact that the road signs, posters and signboards are all in English, so it is extremely refreshing to see you interacting with the locals and even interviewed two. I am also impressed by the tilt-down shot on the Buddha's Tooth Temple, it is very steady if it was handheld; and if the camera was mounted on a tripod, then I admire you to have the stamina to carry one all day long while walking so much! Cheers! NB You can find why chewing gums are banned in Singapore on Google.

To be fair, Singapore has many foreigners amongst is resident population and their lifestyle might be different from the locals. Moreover, many tourists would have great difficulty in distinguishing locals from foreigners as they look the same to them.

    1) About Singapore being the most expensive city. This was a ranking by the Economic Intelligence Unit. (Yes, "Economic Intelligence". What an oxymoron!) This ranking is to advise businesses who are sending their staff to live and work in Singapore. And for such postings to a foreign country, the businesses need to know how much "hardship allowance" they will need to provide. That ranking helps. And if you are planning to live in Singapore as an expatriate staff, and you want to live like you were home in Europe or the US, then yes, Singapore is expensive. For an expatriate. Who needs a Serviced Apartment, a Car, and a monthly supply of Wine. And Cuban Cigars, maybe.
BUT if you are going to live like a local, eat like a local (at hawker centres), travel on buses and MRT like a local, Singapore can be affordable.
And for tourists, there are lots of free attractions - Gardens by the Bay, Jewel, Botanic Gardens, Haw Par Villa, Tree Top Walk, Southern Ridges Walk, Sungei Buloh Wetlands etc.
    2) Chewing Gum. The law is against SELLING or IMPORTATION of gum. And of course, you shouldn't litter with your chewed gum. But it is okay to chew gum in Singapore. Just don't litter, and don't gum up our trains (that was why it was banned in the first place.) So next time you come back, bring your own gum (cos you can't buy any here). Just don't bring in 20 cartons of it, or the customs officer will wonder if you are importing gum to sell. Just enough for yourself. Here's a challenge. If you see a team of police officers patrolling about, go up to them and ask them if it is an offence to chew gum. If they say yes, look crestfallen and leave. Those officers are idiots. (Probably enlisted men). BUT, if they really know the law, they should tell you that it's not illegal to chew gum, just to sell or import gum. IF they say that, then take out your gum and offer them a gum, while you take one yourself. Take pictures! Or videos! 🙂

I had a nice experience recently. I was at the Chinatown complex in the amazing food court with just one thing on my mind to tyr the famous food at hawker Chan & it not dissapoint however that wasn't the best part. Whilst in line a local woman was in front of me & given me a lesson on the history of the place & suggesting best food to try & such a enlightening conversation. Behind me was a young man from Argentina hearing all this then we were all engage in chat. When the lady was due to be served to make it easier she ordered for all 3 of us which we all had the same soya noodles with chicken & she treated us both so all paid for. Me & the other traveller were so touched by this gesture. What a nice Singaporean

I enjoy watching travel videos that feature foreigners visiting Asian countries, because it's always interesting to see how others view Asia and Asians, especially those who are coming to our region for the first time. The way I see it, if you're coming to Asia, leave your pre-conceived ideas and assumptions behind, keep an open mind, and connect with the people you meet along the way to get a fuller experience. I think in Asia, we tend to be more group-oriented, more family-oriented, more community-oriented, less individualistic, putting family and society above our individual selves, probably less loud too. For a lot of the more interesting things in Asia, and perhaps for a more authentic experience, there are no guidebooks or signposts showing you the way to them, so sometimes, you only learn about such things when you talk to a local, the way you did in your video here. We're not as obvious or as open in the way we live or present ourselves, and we can appear more introverted, so it can take more time to find out. But be patient, it may be worthwhile.

I'm Singaporean and I buy my chewing gum stash across the border in Johor Bahru Malaysia. Singapore Customs have never stopped me because of my stash. You can buy gum for personal consumption; though you can't buy it in bulk to sell. use a few sticks or plastic containers of chewing gum, is not an issue. I used to buy 'dental gum' for the local harmacies, but they may have stopped selling them. So, you can chew gum, just be considerate and mindful when disposing of it.

Just don't seem to understand why people are still harping on this 'can or cannot' chew gum in Singapore thingy. Every time I come across this, I just cringe. It's just SO dated! 😂

    Welcome to Singapore!
Chewing gum in Singapore is NOT illegal. But importing, buying and selling chewing gum are illegal.

For cultural immersion, foreigners need to move away from Singapore's business district and tourist attractions, and go visit the heartlands (satellite towns) which are easily accessible by affordable/economical public transport (train, buses - fully airconditioned) ... mingle with locals who generally understand and speak English
