Hey Nigel would love to see a follow up of you using the I cloud tweaked using the setting on the reciever. Your older mic had a much fuller sound. Wondering if the I cloud could get there with adjustments. The I cloud highs however were much clearer and clean.
Hello Nigel, Great to learn the use of a sax mic. This is entire new to me because at my level, I never needed a mic, However, what is interesting about the small mic is the versability of this small gadget. Hi Nigel picked up a ICloud Vocal solo Mic 5 months ago great wireless mic use it on both my Alto, Soprano and Tenor Sax I bought a portable battery bank phone charger to power the isolo mixer unit (great for reverb effects) I'm completely wireless when doing gigs were no power available street performances etc use a Bose Pro wireless speaker too with this. Good value mic thanks for your posts enjoy your channel musical regards Paul from Saxocoustic Channel Sax cover instrumental channel. The Battery does last around 8 hours .Use a MXL Ribbon mic for my recordings
I loved the mic comparison between the AMT & the iSolo. Big difference in sound. The AMT sounded more dark, I suppose it’s a matter of taste at that point. Personally, I liked the brightness of the iSolo, only that it picked up a little too much “air” which can be heard when amplified, but that can always be filtered out with EQ, no problem. I can see the reception being a problem if it’s on one frequency, I’ve endured those issues a couple of times with another mic.

The audio quality difference is noticeable, with the Cloudvocal one being more in the higher pitch zone and AMT having warmer tones which I definitely prefer but only you Nigel can tell which is closer to reality. This can be corrected with some EQ so not a major issue. By far the biggest problem in BOTH mics is the high level of key noise that they pick. It's much better when played with loud backing track but there are saxophone mics on the market that do much better job in that area, although not wireless.
I guess it’s always a balance between the convenience of wireless and the sound quality of a fixed mic. You need to pick the “tool” that fits your need. For me a wireless system is all about being able to move about on stage for live gigs. I wouldn’t use one in the studio where sound quality is more important to me. Thanks for your comments Jacek.
Yikes, there's a big difference. The question is, what is the best wireless mic for sax? I use a Shure wireless mic often and I am thinking about getting a back up because it's been beat up. Outstanding video. High quality for a wireless mic is so important. My first wireless (27 years ago) was a nightmare: cheap and a waist of money.

Thank you for this detailed review. A persuasive argument for the future purchase of this setup is the ease for switching between horns at a gig. I am playing in a funk/blues band now and switch between Alto, Tenor and Bari. In another band I lose the Bari, but pickup the Soprano... When things get cranking I am sometimes behind in transitioning.. missed the first attack on "Vehicle" just last week! Great Channel!
PS......you definitely want to use the supplied wind screen. It helps take edge off of this very live mic and prevents “clips”. Just from my experience.

I have a pretty cheap AKG Perception system. I noticed that in the instructions from AKG, they recommended for clarinets a clip on at the bell, then another mic on a stand closer to the mid body. I don’t play a clarinet but I do play flute. I wondered if the same two mic set would be also be recommended for a flute. This system that you are demonstrating just has a Velcro strap to hold the mic out in front of the sound hole. I wonder if that might just pick up too much breath.

One comment I would add is that it looks like they sent you the USB interface as part of the reviewer package, but this doesn't seem to come as standard on their webstore - it's a $35 optional extra on the link. Worth noting in case anyone is buying it for that feature.
Ok thanks for letting me know about that Tim. For what it’s worth, I think the USB interface is a cool idea if you are looking for a simple interface. I was surprised with how well it worked.
Yeah unfortunately I didn’t see this comment before I bought the unit and not only is it an extra $35 for the USB but it’s also another $30 just for shipping to get it now whereas if I’d bought it with the mic it would have been combined - bugger!
Thanks Nigel - good to see an affordable wireless mic. I currently used a wired mic - an Aston Origin - which I think is awesome. I use it with a Steinberg UR44 interface to record myself (and a vocalist). I have found recording my practice (even playing scales ) is a great way to check out precision of the pulse/ timing, and tone.
At 6:53, I notice the same effect that I get with my cheaper AKG system. It seems that the notes below low D pop more and tend to sound louder with a clip on system.
I think this is a common issue with clip on mics. You can minimise it by having the mic as far away from the bell as possible, but on a loud gig this can cause other issues. It's a balancing act!
Great review. I like the features of the CloudVocal and would love to see them with a higher sound quality mic option...the quality difference between the CloudVocal and the AMT was a little too noticeable for my ears.
I've got a new video coming soon about the new Cloudvocal interface for mobile. BTW, yes the AMT is much clearer but the Cloudvocal in a live gigging situation works great.
In the early 60s Ken Tootal invented a mini mic, the Tootal Bug, less than 1/4" but had to drill into the side of the m/piece (no thanks) came with a small plug to seal it off if you stopped using it.
I really want to go wireless for most of my gigs, but an integrated rechargeable battery is an absolute dealbreaker on any wireless system. If this thing's battery dies at a gig, the set is over. More importantly, in four or five years when its battery is wearing out, the whole mic's life is over. Just get a good clip-on mic and run wired until you can afford a wireless system. Ideally, get one that can run wireless (Shure WB98, Senn e908w, etc.) with an adapter/preamp that lets you go via XLR (Shure's is the RPM626) so you can add a wireless system later, but if you can't afford those mics right now then just get a PGA98H. Spend your money on something you can count on to work every time, the whole time, for a very long time. Note to CloudVocal: replace your dinky lithium battery with a AAA or even better a AA slot and make sure it can take rechargeables, and it seems like you will have a knockout piece of kit here
Hi Nigel, great video. For me the AMT is the better choice. I have the Quantum system, and my engineer has said it is the most neutral Eq mic he’s ever heard. The Cloudvocal, like many other including shure beta 98, seems to boost the high frequencies too much. Some players dig this, but for me, I prefer the flatter response. Lovely playing btw!

Very interesting. I'm just a beginner, looking for a simple way to record myself on backtrack. If I understand well, this handy little thing can do it (OK without a pro quality, but I don't have the instrument level requiring great quality) in addition to its main aim of amplifying sound in a band. And without bothersome cables. Am I right or would you definitely advise me to choose a microphone on a stand?
Hi Xavier, a clip on mic is a lot simpler than a mic+stand+cables etc. Also much more portable. The cloud vocal system is the simplest, smallest one I have tried.
What is your recording setup? The mic is connected to the receiver. Can you connect the receiver to a computer that’s is the recording device with several channels. One of the channels should be reserved for the backing track that is already on the computer. I’m not sure if my description was comprehensive. Today I’m using a Samson USB microphone for recording.
Hi Hans. With the CloudVocal mic you have two options - you can either input from the receiver to your audio interface (which can have 1 to many channels depending on model). Alternatively if you have the USB dongle like they sent me, you can plug that directly to your computer as the input.
Hey guys, are there any experiences about the range of the cloudvocal? The description says around 30 meters which might cause trouble in tricky scenarios...
GREAT video!👍🏼 Im considering buying one for my husband as a gift he plays the sax (alto, tenor) I’m not an expert with this stuff but a musician friend suggested that we have an amplifier to attach to the mic and that we cannot use regular speakers (tv) :$ is that true? If I buy this mic I would have to invest in an amplifier? My husband likes to play for fun and upload his videos on Instagram and Facebook? It’s not really for gigs, it’s just that he feels that all his videos sound amateur without a mic and so I want to surprise him for his bday and buy him one of these :) what do you suggest
With a high quality EQ the iSolo sounds great actually. I run mine through a Dunlop MXR 108 ten band EQ pedal and it sounds very good. Better than my SD Systems LDM94, which is more expensive.
It definitely loses some of the bass frequency, but I think it would actually sound better for a funkier lead sax sound. A lot could be sorted out in eq, but - if you're recording, would you not have the iSolo plus an ambient mic (say a Sure SM57 or sm58) to get a balanced volume and a better mix of frequencies? I suppose some compression could be dialled in to take down the volume spike in the low end, but I think it's better to start with as wide a range of frequencies and volume as possible before post-production. :)
Hi Stu, yes possibly though I wouldn't use the CloudVocal in a studio situation. You could, but I would prefer a mic on stand. For Sax School I just use a Rode NT1A for recording which is inexpensive and sounds great.
I have that AKG system, but I now only use it for home recording. For shows, it seems to work out better to stand away from a mic stand while playing back up, then step into the mic stand to take a solo. It seems less trouble than switching the clip on off and on, or clipping the mic on for a solo. Also, I now have a Select Jazz 7 www.musiciansfriend.com/woodwinds/daddario-woodwinds-select-jazz-tenor-saxophone-mouthpiece/j51742000002000. that I find so loud and bright that I don’t often find myself in need of amplification in the some places I’m playing.
I love the D'Addario tenor mpc, and was using it for about a year before I switched to my SYOS (which has it beat at the extreme ends...altissimo and subtone).
Hi Nasko Sax. In this video I used GarageBand with the CloudVocal USB interface. You simply plug it into your computer and this sends the microphone signal to the computer. I think it would work with most audio recording programs. Hope that helps.
Having major problems with this microphone cutting out on gigs. Can't trust it in a hotel situation :( Can you help Cloud Vocal? Does anyone else have this problem?
I kind of think of this push by this company to be like the Molekule air cleaner. Where they have slick marketing and packaging, but the actual product is mediocre . Plus, wireless you have to consider frequencies and interference. Though you say if you are "just gigging locally it is all you'll ever need", I have had frequent gigs where someone's cheap wireless setup gets interference from some device. And would you invest in something that is a little cheaper but doesn't sound as good? If I could get a better sounding thing for a little more, then I'd get that.
I did check with CloudVocal about the channel of this wireless mic and they said it automatically switches between channels to avoid issues like this. I know on cheaper and older mics interference has been a problem but CloudVocal say this shouldn’t happen with this model.
Thanks Nigel. The AMT sounds like you are playing in a recording studio, it is rich. If I had known about it I would have consider before buying the Shure GLXD4. I have had the Shure GLXD4 for several years now and have used it as a solo act playing over tracks probably over 100 times now, but I have been seeking to improve the sounds all that time. I've bought mixers with built in effects, that still haven't given me the sound I'm seeking. Not that it does not sound good, customer state all the time how clear my sound is, but I want it a little dirty at times, the Shure keeps it clean. Thus I am interested that the CloudVocal iSolo has build in effects and an EQ are they any good seriously? Thx.
Good question. I didn't test this with the Cloudvocal but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have any issues unless you were performing somewhere really big - in which case you probably would use a different type of system. For small gigs this setup works great.

Glad you enjoyed the comparison. Range is always an issue on cheaper wireless systems but if you are doing small gigs I think it would be fine.

To a hobby saxophonist there iCoudvocal sounds awesome. Neat small and allows direct feed to iPad which is great.

Both mics sounded good, but I actually think the Cloudvocal sounded cleaner. The size and the adapter for flute makes it very interesting.

CloudVocal has really studio quality top end, but AMT has really nice bottom... well... it seams like the best solution will be to mix them together

How did you record your sax without any audible key-clacking noises? Are those mics decoupled from the body in some way?
Hi, I just used the mics as they are. The AMT does have a pretty good suspension system on the mic capsule.
I use a Royer 121 ribbon mic with my sax

Having major problems with this microphone cutting out on gigs. Can't trust it in a hotel situation :( Can you help Cloud Vocal? Does anyone else have this problem?

I kind of think of this push by this company to be like the Molekule air cleaner. Where they have slick marketing and packaging, but the actual product is mediocre . Plus, wireless you have to consider frequencies and interference. Though you say if you are "just gigging locally it is all you'll ever need", I have had frequent gigs where someone's cheap wireless setup gets interference from some device. And would you invest in something that is a little cheaper but doesn't sound as good? If I could get a better sounding thing for a little more, then I'd get that.
I did check with CloudVocal about the channel of this wireless mic and they said it automatically switches between channels to avoid issues like this. I know on cheaper and older mics interference has been a problem but CloudVocal say this shouldn’t happen with this model.

Thanks Nigel. The AMT sounds like you are playing in a recording studio, it is rich. If I had known about it I would have consider before buying the Shure GLXD4. I have had the Shure GLXD4 for several years now and have used it as a solo act playing over tracks probably over 100 times now, but I have been seeking to improve the sounds all that time. I've bought mixers with built in effects, that still haven't given me the sound I'm seeking. Not that it does not sound good, customer state all the time how clear my sound is, but I want it a little dirty at times, the Shure keeps it clean. Thus I am interested that the CloudVocal iSolo has build in effects and an EQ are they any good seriously? Thx.

Good question. I didn't test this with the Cloudvocal but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have any issues unless you were performing somewhere really big - in which case you probably would use a different type of system. For small gigs this setup works great.
But it costs half a grand. Is it really worth the money? I think it should be less expensive

The problem with enclosed batteries built in is that one day they will die, then what? £400 gone?
True however I suspect you will get a few years of regular use before that happens I guess that is the trade off for size.
