I'm from Singapore and I'm trying to pick up Cantonese as it's my dialect group over here (my grandparents were from Guangzhou & HK). In Singapore, we are discouraged from using dialects for official use and in public so Singaporean Chinese people typically use English and Mandarin (putonghua) in schools and at work.
Over the years, this has resulted in a whole generation of younger Singaporean Chinese losing their 'dialects'. Very few of my friends can understand yet alone converse in whatever dialects (Teochew, Hokkien, Hakka, Hainanese, etc).
And it's only now that I worry I'm losing my roots, hence, I decided to pick up Cantonese. And it was frustrating as there seems to be a lack of resources/materials so I had to look online and talk to people who could teach me the basics. I personally find that watching TVB/drama doesn't really help me as the pace is either too fast or that I could only learn how to understand instead of learning how to speak it.
I don't know if I'm too late in life to pick it up but your channel has been helpful. hahaha and my HK friends and colleagues were really happy when I tell them I love listening to Dear Jane, Supper Moment, Phil Lam and the classic performers like Beyond, 容袓兒 etc.

Dialects are often being marginalized but yes, they are really valuable cultural assets that needs to be pass down.
Having a common language (e.g. English or Chinese or...) is good for international communication, while our local language is equally important to preserve our identity/uniqueness in the global village too!
And no worries, it's never too late to pick up a language as long as you are willing to learn >v<

Very useful. I include your vlog as a useful resource. I refer to your site often for both learning and entertainment. The shopping phrases were very useful for instance. I tried Cantonese 101. it was pretty good but it was sometimes hard to put all the parts together.

That would be super great if you could put Cantonese subtitles on your videos! It is always hard to find good channels that use Canto subtitles. Thankfully it seems that more people are doing that these days.
For learners who also know French, I highly recommend the Assimil Cantonese book (Le Cantonais) - a short dialogue everyday (with audio + characters + Jyutping + French translation) with helpful comments on special phrases and grammar. The learning curve is not too steep and I'm really happy with my progress so far.
The other main thing I do is to talk with language partners that I found via a website called italki. It's a site where you can both find Cantonese speakers that want to learn your mother tongue and book paid lessons with professional teachers if you want. I only use it to chat with other learners, which is completely free.

Actually, my dad had recommended me to speak Mandarin on TH-cam as that might reach more viewers.
However, as a Hongkonger (although im just a small potato), I feel that it is necessary to use it more frequently and let more people to know about how vibrant and interesting this language is ^ ^

@@MtzCherry When I was a child I usually watch TVB films in 90's and I love Hong Kong since then. And now I want to learn Cantonese. Now I also use app memrise to learn Cantonese, it's quite good for learning vocabulary, you can try it and recomend for others. Thank you.

I got very interested to learn Cantonese only recently and I have no Chinese knowledge. I have been learning Japanese though for the past few years and reached daily conversational level, but to start learning Cantonese, where do you suggest I should start? Learn mandarin first or dive straight into Cantonese?

Hi Cherry! First I would like to thank you for your valueable channel! As I try to learn to speak Cantonese and maybe to be able to write characters later, your channel is so good! I have recently bought the Android app, sorry iPhone users, "Hanping Cantonese Dictionary". They have a full 30 days refund. The app has a chinese handwriting recognition, Hanzi stroke animations and uses proper Cantonese dictionary words, not Mandarin with Cantonese pronunciation.
Hanping offers a soundboard there one can compare the 6 tones which is awesome since I know it is difficult for foreigners to get the tones right and also a chance to get the initials and finals right.

Great video! The Pleco app is really good. More known for Mandarin, but you can downloaded pronunciations for Cantonese as well, which will be romanized in the Jyutping system. So when I see a character on Pleco, I have it set for the Mandarin and Cantonese pronunciations. E.g. 大: dà (daai6): Big. I should add that it’s free. You don’t need to register or anything.

but if there are certain words that are different from how it's pronounced in the song, you can always refer to humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/lexi-can/

Just got started learning Cantonese today! I was wondering if there's any easy ways to tell if I'm actually reading written Cantonese, or if it's a different dialect. For example, in this th-cam.com/video/P-ExF_bFUDM/w-d-xo.html video, they have subtitles in the video, which I assume are actually written in Cantonese, since it's aimed at kids, but according to wikipedia, subtitles for movies and such are often written not in Cantonese.

I’d say Cantonese coz it’s easier to transit from Traditional Chinese to simplified one later :)

apart from the must-go tourist spots, I would recommend going to the museums and newly opened cafes/eateries with interesting HK style interior design (coz it's too hot & humid some times =v='')

If it doesn’t rain, you may join one of those tours organised by “Walk in HK”.
If it rains, I would recommend going to Comix House Base, watching Omnimax show in Space Museum, K11, or joining some interesting local workshops/events (from timable.com/en/)
As for food, personal favourite would be cart noodles (www.theloophk.com/best-cart-noodles-in-hong-kong/) and Tam Jai Sam Jor Mixian (they have lots of outlets across HK)

Cherry, you said something about "movies" and "drama" which wasn't clear to me. Movies are a medium; drama is a genre. So you can see drama in the movies, on tv, or on live stage. So please explain what distinction you were trying to draw: this is clearly a problem of Chinese-English translation, and I've heard it before, so I hope you can answer. Keep up the good work. Your recos are great.
Usually we call movies/films as 電影or戲, which are watched in the cinema/theatre.
While for dramas, we usually call them 劇, which are usually broadcasted on TV (TV Drama＝電視劇) e.g. Sherlock

Oh I see. I figured it was just a different use of the terms. In the US, we are more likely to call this kind of "drama" a "series". Even though series doesn't inherently mean "drama", we tend to use series for your "drama", and just call the non-serious ones comedies, or sitcoms. Just a different way of looking at it. Thank you SO MUCH for referring to yourself as "ngo", and not "wo" or "aw". When somebody who claims to speak Cantonese can't even say "ngo" in the language, it's a HUGE tipoff to me that they or their family are NOT Cantonese. They came from some other part of China, where the standard first person singular pronoun is "wo", and the polite people of Hong Kong just overlook this goofy pronunciation. I draw the line though, when they start teaching non-Cantonese how to say the pronoun for "I" as "wo". Ngo, ngo ngo!

The best way to learn Cantonese is learn all the bad language so U know they try to say bad things to U!
