1-3/4" cannon blank test fire

  • My dad built this cannon from scratch, wood, barrel, and wheels all made by him. The barrel is about 26" long and the bore is 1-3/4", just big enough to fire golf ball sized projectiles. We made up this blank charge (one ounce of fffg black powder with about 6 inches of packed paper wadding) just so we could make a big boom for Independence day. I think we accomplished just that, don't you?
    We'll be working up an actual projectile charge eventually, and of course we'll post up the resulting video.

    Never stand in front of the cannon when the cannon is loaded !
    An hold the wood in the midle and not at the end of the pole that in case of "
    accident" the pole slip out of your hand but your hand will stay.
    Nice Cannon,
    best Regards

    That barrel will easily take 2 ounces of black powder because it's long. Flames out the barrel indicate unburned powder. I use 2 ounces in my 1.25" barrel. For a good boom, pack the barrel with sawdust. Use a wet sponge rammer between shots. It is superbly made and the first one I have seen in a long time that has adequate sized trunions.

      I use bread for wadding after paper. Bread packs tight and creates more pressure. Does the cannon fit golf balls?

    • @27Turo
      @27Turo  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It does fit golf balls! They come out so fast, you can't even see where they go.

    • @SuperYGOD
      @SuperYGOD 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have a golf ball cannon and I know what you are saying. I tested the velocity over water, and the speed was similar to a .22 LR., using 2 ounces of home made ffg black powder.

    • @briceyokem9236
      @briceyokem9236 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SuperYGOD Bread is what is suggested for muzzle loaders, but I use cleaning patches treated with fire retardant. Without that paper or cloth tends to catch fire (smolder) and end up with a delayed fire hazard.

      It really isn't hard, I've built probably 30-40 cannons, my first one was an old pice of steel pipe I found in the garage , threaded the back screwed in a bolt put a fuse som powder and boom, now I build recoiling howitzer look alike cannons. It's really easy,

    In some states, it's illegal to fire a blank load out of a cannon. Never tell the police what you're doing. OK, here's how to get a good boom out of it. Use the 1 ounce FF and add about a cup or so of dry sawdust on top of the powder down the bore. Then fill the rest of the barrel with damp sawdust right out to the muzzle. Pack it snug with a hammer and wooden dowel. This baby will really bark. Always use a wet sponge rammer between shots to kill any residual sparks before reloading. Even a 5 minute wait is inadequate. Use a wet sponge rammer. Never use the can to pour powder in the barrel. Never pack the barrel with rags because they can start a fire. Sawdust won't do that. Black powder does not build pressure, so your steel barrel is very safe. Cast iron is what is dangerous. It will fragment in cold weather.

      There's no projectile in it. There's very little force pushing it back. Check out some of my other videos where it's shooting an actual cannonball, it rolls back a foot or two each shot.
      Plus, it weighs almost 150 pounds, it doesn't roll back much even with a heavy charge under a ball.
