- THIS IS MY MINI BRONZE BLACK POWDER CANNON. THIS CANNON WAS A KIT I BOUGHT FROM WWW.DIXIEGUNWORKS.COM SOME YEARS BACK. THE TEST TODAY WAS TOO SEE HOW MANY WOOD BLOCKS IT WOULD GO THROUGH BEFORE IT STOPPED. THE LOAD WAS 30 GRAINS OF 3FFFG GOEX BLACK POWDER AND A .490 PURE CAST LEAD ROUND BALL, AND SOME CANNON FUZE THAT I ALSO BOUGHT FRON DIXIE GUN WORKS. THIS TEST WAS ANOTHER PART TO MY ONGOING BLACK POWDER WOOD TESTS.

I noticed that you never put any tissue paper down the barrel i reckon if you do you will get more compression and more power out of your cannon.

You need to patch your balls, or use a .500" ball. That .490" ball is too loose in the bore.
The bore is tighter than a standard 50 , and I'm playing it safe scene the barrel is bronze and not modern steel.

Do you think it would have more speed if it wasn't so close to the blocks. Wouldn't they slow the air exiting the barrel? And has the shot even stopped accelerating at that point?
zach olson im aware black powder stops acceleration after a distance possibly before leaving the barrel even if the barrel is longer. but I learned this on the history ch ^^. look it uo though. I could be wrong and you would learn more yourself than I can tell you! :)
I always wondered that too. On one hand ballistics are always measured at the end of a barrel, that being the highest point of acceleration. But as a kid playing hockey, they teach you to get up close to block a shot so it doesn't sting as much.

I think most of the blast drove the cannon back instead of the ball out the barrel
You should focus on how you aimed your camera at the object instead of hold out of frame
To much powder and no wading is the issue here. You can see the unburden powder on the board, and without good wading to seal the gases you are losing a lot of pressure.
30 grains is a very very light load for that. Tripled up is a good start for a .50 cal
Fire at a nail that is part driven into wood, to see if it can hammer nails in. If its quicker than using a hammer, i want 20% royalties

The acceleration stops the moment the ball is out of the barrel. At that point aerodynamics will be slowing it down.
Adding a piece of paper towel before ball might help tremendously

Thats the first time I've seen the right length of fuze used, everybody else uses way way to long a fuze, who wants to stand around weighting. i used that length in my big cannons & mortars before converting them to use a cannon lock & shotgun primers, a couple use musket caps. Ive got a small old ironside 45cal cannon thats rifled, it was $25 at a gunshow in 1985 and shoots pretty good😊

I have a 75 cal and with 100 grains and a 12 ga slug it almost equals same load in 12 gauge

The Janka scale for wood hardness states that Pine is rated around 400 lbf, obviously the higher the number, the harder the wood. Oak on the other hand is around 1400 on the Janka scale. I would stick with the softer wood like Pine versus anything with a higher Janka scale, or you will definitely end up with a Ricochet scenario. Whatever you do, don't dare use a piece of ipe, it's rated at over 3,500 lbf. The tiny little cannon would barely mar the woods surface.

why didnt you use some type of wadding between the powder and ball or around the ball to increase pressure like people do with muzzleloaders

where can you buy fuses?
Paul King, my dear friend you can either use a little glue and black powder inside a piece of paper wrapped tightly, or you can buy bulk cannon fuse at your local fireworks store just ask for the cannon fuse line. Or you can do what I do and use the most efficient and cheap fuse that you don't need to make which is a sparkler. they burn hot enough to light my rockets and my thermite and they sure as hell lite black powder just fine. Please let me know if you have any questions. :)
