  • Pakistan is in the middle of political chaos - and one man is at the center of it all. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted last year in a no-confidence vote, but polls suggest he remains the country’s most popular political leader.
Within a year of being removed from office, 70-year-old Khan has survived an assassination attempt and faces dozens of new charges ranging from corruption, terrorism to sedition. The current government has branded the popular politician known for his philanthropy and cricket career as a "militant" and attempted to arrest him using excessive force, while tear gassing, attacking and arresting his supporters. Khan believes the charges against him are political persecution tactics meant to distract him from campaigning for elections due this year.
VICE World News’ Isobel Yeung sat down with Khan at his home in Lahore on March 6, 2023.

We never invested in education, healthcare and human development. While other countries are worried about declining birth rate we have large growing population of untrained sick population. The country debt continues to grow. Its ironic that Pakistan is one of the largest importer of wheat from ukraine and the one of the largest buyer of apartments in dubai.

And to VICE's and Yeung's credit, they did not edit his words in such a way as to make him look bad. Imran Khan aside for a moment, Isabelle, I hope that's how it's spelt, slayed into the room, asked questions so deep and original, even I feared a little for her. Kudos and much, much appreciation to this brave young lady! But we're talking about Imran, the most honest and down-to-earth politician in aeons. He never backs down from challenges and questions. I had one question in my mind for a long time, "Why aren't Muslim leaders condemning China?" And Imran answered so honestly and beautifully. It's true that 'third world' countries are always at the risk of danger. Protect Imran Khan, Pakistani people. The piece looks good overall but a few observations:
1: Imran Khan has a huge female support and party workers but it seems quite deliberate that VICE chose to start the video as if it was some misogynist male dominated group. I couldn't see the female representation in the video and since the platform has a global reach, it does give a negative vibe.
2: The reporter insinuates that there was no *evidence* that suggests that ruling party was behind it. Clearly, VICE has not followed the developments and the cover up that took place right after the attack. Not even an FIR has been registered because there was the name of ISI's officials and the ruling party's interior minister. Also, it would've been great if the current government's attitude towards media was given a space in the video. One of the most popular investigative journalist, Arshad Sharif was butchered in Kenya as he ran away from the country after facing humiliation by the government agencies. Who was he criticising? VICE fails to mention.
3: The voiceover stretches the answers of Imran Khan by adding additional information like 'sees himself as champion of women's rights' which he clearly did not say.
While adding creative music does elevate the videos of VICE (and I love them), this piece is more like a balancing act. The voiceover has information that deviates from what is being said in the video, maybe because the pre-determined answer did not meet the expectations.

Can't agree. She was forcing her feminist thoughts to get approved by Imran khan, even if he didn’t want to. Imran wanted to forget about his cricket life, but she keep dragging the topic in conversation again and again. She was bit coercive and compelling

First time ever in Pakistan history the power houses don’t know what to do with this man! That’s how amazingly he played the cards, Pakistan is a country where getting rid of someone is not hard at all no matter how high profile you are!
