Kurt, thank you for not only the first look at Batter Up, but also for the gift of laughter you provided me with the "only roster sheet you will be sent " and the no city listed for the birthplace of the players.
Kurt - Thank You for introducing me to Batter Up Baseball Game, I have been on the Batter-Up Facebook page which is growing fast! I am falling in Love again with table-top baseball because of Batter-Up Baseball game. I just played a fun 4 game series between the Yankees of 1961, my all-time favorite team) and the Seattle Pilots - 3 of whom I would meet 10 years later in my Northwest League career. The Yankees won 4 games to 0 with a 26-1 run differential! The game is a blast to play almost as fun as listening to this video!
Great video, Kurt. At around 20:40 you mention that there is no HRP adjustment because apparently Stone allowed an average number of HR. Actually, he allowed an above-average number of HR, which is why he as a "1,3" result on his card. If that result is rolled, and the batter has a 1 or 3 result on his card, the outcome is a home run (assuming the optional HR/HRP rules are being used). I believe if the batter does not have a 1 or 3 on his card in that situation, the result is a single or double (I can't recall which). This is one of those features of Batter Up! that was arguably ahead of its time. Games that have this feature contribute a lot toward reflecting a pitcher's actual abilities/performance.
I've been looking for this game for over a year, but to no avail. Kudos to you for previewing it. I wish I could give 100 likes. Excited to learn more about it.
Per Baseball Reference, Disco Dan Ford was not born in Illinois: "Dan Ford Position: Rightfielder Bats: Right • Throws: Right6-1, 185lb (185cm, 83kg) Born: May 19, 1952 (Age: 70-024d) in Los Angeles, CA" !?!
This looks very intriguing; there are elements of APBA (numbering and charts for base runners) and Sports Illustrated baseball (pitcher gets a roll first, and then to batter's card if there is blank). Too bad it is not still in circulation...
You have captured the essence of the game design with your comment. In the past few months a friend and I created a Facebook group dedicated to this game. I also reverse-engineered the game and now have a spreadsheet that can be used to create player cards. With the help of another Batter Up! fan, we have created a few teams and posted them on the Facebook group.
Looks like a fun game and yeah it does have some different things we don't usually see. Also wanted to let you know btw that you went to the wrong chart with a runner on at one point. Mistakes happen ... like when I was born. Finally eh thanks for the laughs man throughout this although I guess we can partially thank the company for making them possible. Have a great rest of the week and again thanks for all the content you put out. Love it.
Someone mentioned it was a little like APBA. I'd say a little more like Fall Classic. Fun video Kurt. I hope you solve the mystery of why only 24 teams. My first guess is they forgot the expansion Blue Jays and Mariners. Second guess is they don't know how to count to 26. Either way you're on your own. They ain't gonna tell ya so forget it!
The front-end (the pitcher-batter interaction that we won’t mention) is almost identical to Sports Illustrated (SI) baseball. Even the special dice have the same probability distribution. I’ve spent the last week or so figuring out formulas to help create cards. Another friend and I may make some new teams if we can automate the process (he is a programmer). We now have a Facebook group for this game.
They don't appear to have an aggressive policy against sending replacement fields, so maybe they would be open to that? Or perhaps they will send someone ro repossess the game outright.
I finally got a copy of this great game for my tabletop sports collection! I can check another grail game off my list! (Now, if I could only find a copy of APBA Pro Boxing...)
Arizona, want to know what city? Tough beans! Am not giving out that information, so there. It was soooo Long ago there are few birth certificates that survived the fires. Heck I could be anybody!
Kurt, what are your thoughts on Back to Basics Baseball by Downey Games (if you've ever played it)? I ordered it since it didn't cost a lot but wanted to try to get a review of it by someone.
I use Back to Basics Baseball for my 2018 College Season replay, I like the game for its speed of play and its simplicity, After testing about 15 Games I had to manipulate a few result totals on the FAC’S both on the Batter and the Pitcher Cards to satisfy myself with the realism of play. So far, with a small sample size the statistics for the Batter’s and Pitcher’s are looking very realistic. This is a game where the longer you play, The more realistic it will become without a doubt, Make sure you shuffle the FAC deck very well after each game. I hope this information helps you.\\\\\\\
Thanks for the video. Can you list what is on all sides of each of the three die? (For example, in SI Baseball, the black die is: 10, 20, 20, 30, 30 30.)
After doing some digging on the Dephi forum, it seems that the red # die is allocated like this: 0, 10, 10, 20, 20, 20. As I suspected, one black # die apparently is: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and the other black # die is: 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
I am not going to tell you how I feel about this game, I’m not going to tell you where I’m from, But I will say, These are the only comments I will be making, So do not accidentally erase this because its the only one you’re going to get Mr.Bergland. Do I make myself clear!!

APBA Pro Boxing is on my bucket list
Kurt, Thank you for introducing us/me to so many different and interesting games. Really enjoying the channel.
