  • What's the different between a paraphrase mass and a parody mass? There are lots of different types of masses written during the Renaissance and it can be confusing to keep them straight. In this video, I'll explain them all and share an example for each.

    Another great video! I'm teaching the renaissance mass to my undergraduate students soon and will use this video. I appreciate that you include some examples not discussed in most textbooks, including the Byrd mass, which is underappreciated and so lovely.

      Thank you! Glad to hear the video is helping! And yes, all of Byrd's masses are masterpieces.

    Your videos helps me! As I already wrote a comment for another video, I am a student of Sorbonne université, department of musicology, we had to study music history about medieval & renaissance. "Merci beaucoup Dr Nielsen!"

    A small note on an otherwise fantastic resource: a 'cyclic mass' refers to any mass that contains the 5 movements (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) connected through a unifying device, but this doesn't necessarily mean that it becomes unified through the use of a motto. A cyclic mass, in other words, is a larger category that could potentially include a paraphrase, parody, motto, soggetto cavato, or freely composed mass. Hoping that's not too tedious, just wanted to point out. The video, on the whole, is excellent.

    I will watch this multiple times - lots of information. Thanks, I enjoyed it. I also enjoy the usual music-video introduction to Keep It Classical. It is a "classy" way to introduce your lessons. Please don't eliminate it.

      Thanks! I'm just experimenting at the moment. Sometimes I feel like the intro stymies the momentum, but maybe I'm wrong.

    Parody masses are probably my favourite, especially when the source material is already wonderful. The Missa ‘Mille regretz’ by Morales and the Missa ‘Praeter rerum serium’ by de Rore are two of the best in my opinion. It’s no coincidence they are both based on original material by Josquin!

      We love a good parody mass, especially based on a work by Josquin!

    Curious, which major in music did you specify in? Did you learn all these types of mass in an early liturgical class or was it called a different name?

    I listened many masses. This give me mind-blowing and pyshodelic feelin. It's more harmony than melody. Sometimes is very rough for listen. Masses have 5 part, but sanctus has 2 part: Sanctus and Benedictus. I love when masses have many voices. Example: robert carver missa dum sacrum mysterium a 10. Thank you for Antoine Brumel - Missa Et ecce terræ motus. This so mind-blowing! I still learn listen this music. It's magnificent, but same time can be very rough for listen. Baroque masses is not too rough for listen in comparation of renaissance masses. (English is not my first language, and I don't know how grammaticly correct is this.)

    1:06 in general congregation only gets the bread. Not wine. Priest gets both

    This would have been SO helpful when I was in college!! Renaissance music continues to be my weak spot.
    Also that Taverner piece is so purdy!!

    • @KeepitClassical
      @KeepitClassical  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right! I wish I had a resource like this!
      That Taverner is so gorgeous. Did you know that it created a whole sub-genre of English instrumental music called "In Nomines?"

    • @scottblair3719
      @scottblair3719 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Keep it Classical the whole In Nomine phenomenon is so interesting and well worth an episode, I think! I find if fascinating that that one snippet from Taverner’s Missa Sine Nomine randomly spawned a whole genre. It will give you a good excuse to delve into the amazing obsession C. Tye had for the form.

      @@scottblair3719 That's a good idea! I've been thinking about it too. I only learned about them with I did an analysis on Gabriel Jackson's "In Nomine Domini" for my dissertation.

    Every time you use the Lassus excerpt I just know I've sung it before and I can't remember where or for whom! Was it for Brevitas?

    • @markodebeljak1145

      I think missa brevis is short mass. About 20 min.

      It was with Brevitas! Back in 2015. Was supposed to be on Silence and Music but got cut.

    7:20 to parody a piece of music should not make anyone believe the composer is less original or “les industrious “. Sometimes the duty of referring to a previous composition while being original at the same time is more of a labour than dealing with 100 % fresh materials

    It’s beautiful. It sort of still sounds medieval, like the gregorians, to me. I’m so confused! Not enough music ed I guess. Still a rank amateur.

    The congregation is not given "bread and wine", but the body and blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ under the accidents of bread and wine. If you´re talking about a Catholic mistery, at least give the Catholic explanation.

      Bread and wine that Catholics tell themselves is body and blood

      Remind me to never bring you to a party. Also, catholicism as a whole is pretty much a joke by now.
