    The introduction of secular tunes into the Catholic liturgy cannot have been novel in the 16th Century. Dufay's Missa Si My Face Ay Pale, the many Missa L'Homme Arme (oh, why not cite Josquin?) would argue against the notion. ... Still, your point is well taken: the Catholic establishment, shocked, sought any advantage it could muster. ... And the 30-years war was the result.
    What baffles the secular mind is the fact that all this nasty turmoil nevertheless stimulated the production of beautiful music--on both sides of the external conflict. A testimony to the transcendent excellence of true music, I should think.
