Great in depth vid showing if you take your time even a novice hobbyist can bring back the paint on a preowned sportscar. The oxidized headlamps also show there's no simple way to restore the finish. It takes time, patience and elbow grease to bring them back to almost new. Thanks Jay for the great how to vid using products that can be purchased over the counter.
Nice work Jay. That color looks more vibrant than ever( as long as you have owned it). It’s a satisfying feeling clean and pimp your ride. A clean car IS a happy car.
I just detailed my brother’s burgundy 987. I removed the headlights and taillights to make the restoration a little easier. I found three spots where the car had been resprayed, made polishing a nightmare.
After decontamination I have never done more than clay bar, which always seems to be adequate. But then I don’t have a older car. Of course we are a select crew who get satisfaction from a truly well done cleaning. Great episode, thanks for sharing.
Bought my 1st Porsche in July 2020 It is the best thing I’ve EVER purchased. I got lucky : a black 2007 convertible 987 with only 27K miles for $18.5 K I also put a great sound system in it and it’s like a family member. God I love my Boxster…..
Just discovered your channel after watching Nick Murray's video on the 996. Althought it seems like you know what you're doing, I figured I'd mention a few things anyway. Always measure the depth of the paint before the cutting stage. It can be incredibly easy to burn through paint, especially on older cars. I'd also say to limit your number of passes. Sure it's great to have a scratch free finish but it's important to remember you can't put back on what you've taken off, especially if you might not have a great amount to work with to begin with. Looking forward to binging the rest of your content!
Jay on the dent removal... As you already know you have to hit the dent several times and use different puller tips as the ding gets smaller and changes shape. It does work well in the end. Mine came with alcohol pads i believe to clean the surface prior to glue. It came out really nice!
Well done Jay - great effort. Not many people would be brave enough to do all that. For sure you probably learned many lessons on the way as you’ve done all the way with this car. Thanks for sharing. 👍
Excellent results I’d say! I just had my Forest Green Carrera 4S detailed on Friday along with Ceramic Coating. Admittedly it isn’t anywhere near as ‘weathered’ as the Boxster but still very happy with the results, especially as these Porsche dark metallic greens really stand out when clean.
Thanks for posting this Jay! I've been wondering what to do about the swirl marks in my 2013 Boxster. Have been hesitant to address it myself but, seeing how well yours came out will now give it a go. Well done!
Remarkable results, Jay!! Didn’t know you were a diy detailer. I consider myself the same and take great pride in the cars looking good. Not much I can offer other than the importance of pad choice and the speed of your passes. Normally orange pads are a good middle ground. At times you might need to get out a stiffer foam, or even microfiber/wool. You rightly state that it will all be situation dependent.
Great job on the paint, Jay! Looks amazing…! Well done. I do have some thoughts on the headlight restoration: 1. Why not just remove the headlights from the car? It’s super easy on the Boxster. 2. If you use a headlight restoring kit you will get better results in a much shorter period of time. Personally, I use the Sylvania kit (no affiliation) and it’s worked extremely well. The headlights will look brand new. 3. The yellowing on the headlights is actually the UV coating failing. With most kits they give you a liquid that helps soften up the yellowed UV areas and remove it quickly on your first pass with the super fine grit sandpaper. 4. The final step of the kit process is recoating the headlights with a UV based sealant. Think of it as headlight clearcoat with a UV protectant. A ceramic sealant won’t last very long on the headlights, as the there is no UV protection. The plastic will start deteriorating again fairly soon. 5. The last time I did a headlight restoration I believe it took about an hour for each headlight from start to finish. The biggest issue for people who have not done this before is sanding the headlight and thinking that they’ve ruined it because it’s gotten all milky on the first sanding pass. That’s normal. You really have to work some areas harder to make the clarity uniform. After a couple of passes with finer sandpaper everything starts clearing up and the UV sealant at the end makes them look absolutely new.
@@the1beard I love the wizard but that’s like putting WD40 on your headlights - temporary success only. I’ll trust the headlight restoration experts that guarantee their product…
Amazing work Jay, looks fantastic. Very brave to attempt this, it paid of with your hard work. Had you thought of applying a 2k clear coat to the headlights? Ive seen conflicting videos on if its best to sand down and polish or sand and clear coat.
Thanks again. Yes, I did actually but, honestly, I ran out of energy. I’d been at it for at least 10 hours by that stage! They’ll be fine for now and are tonnes better than when I started!
Great color, and a good job bringing it back to life❗️I noticed the MG, they were my first love, had quite a few Midgets, my 986 seems like a Midget on steroids, quick, not fast, but a joy to drive. Keep up the good work
It might have been easier to remove the headlights before polishing….its only one small bolt inside the frunk. But great results I know it took a full day when I did my 997 which was much longer than I had expected after watching the usual TH-cam videos so my advice is definitely give yourself as much time as possible.
Oh that’s my pleasure, Jeff! I would say that I did at least 15 hours there! Worth it though. Great feeling of achievement when it went right (for once)!
Great video. Very time consuming but well worth the effort looking at the results you've achieved . By the way how are you getting on with the soft top replacement ? That's something that I really need to do .
Well done Jay! Another excellent instructional video. It certainly gives other owners the confidence to have a go and achieve results that only seem possible by a professional. Do you own all this kit or are you able to hire it? Regards Phillip
Thanks! I bought it. Not too expensive especially when you get good results. All the equipment used is linked in the video description so you can see what they cost.
Sorry if I missed it but did you seal the headlights after the treatment? If yes with what? Otherwise it will turn yellow very quickly after sanding away the factory UV blocking coating
Hey, I need your opinion! I am not sure which 996 to buy and wanted some opinions! A 99 996 with 96k and one owner with a full service history or the same car with 32k and a short service history . One owner as well. Thx
@@shughes911 Tow very different experiences. Cayman is balanced but noticeably smaller. 911 is the halo car and faster and roomier. I think I’d go with the newer Cayman. 96k is too many miles for me and the lack of SH on the lower mileage one would make it a non-starter too.
@@madfemurfast It’s getting closer to the condition of the 911 which makes me happy. Still nowhere near as fast though as you would expect! Maybe I will do something about that one day.
