Wow! Congrats on the fun new toy! Before I had my 996.2, I had a 986 Boxster S. Both are VERY fun cars!!! You’re going to love it! Two FREE tips for you: 1 - If you take the cover off the drivers side intake, there’s a black plastic “baffle” behind the cover. You can pull that out, no tools required. Then, reattach the intake cover. The result is glorious, growly induction noise right behind your ears. 2 - There’s a pin in a relay under the dash that you can fold flat to release the ability to operate the power top while in motion. It makes dropping the top at a red light much less stressful when the light turns green before you’re ready.
I've owned a 2002 for a number of years. My cup holders are located where your head unit is located. And my head unit is located where the opening slot, that you have a cable stuffed into, is in your center console. To the best of my knowledge those can be moved/configured however you like. Enjoy!
Jay, I'm a '99 996 "runny eggs headlight owner". i love the GT headlights! Mine is triple Black and the Amber lenses looks great on my car. Also, I love that color combination on your Boxster !! Gorgeous!!
Very nice, Jay! This will be an interesting project to follow. My 2 cents on tires...I have been very happy with the Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 Plus. That's a mouthfull but I've driven in very hard rain with them and not a bit of hydroplaning. They are great on dry roads and seem to be wearing well. I have not had them out in the snow yet. Anyway...carry on! -Tom
Hi Jay, nice looking Boxter, they are fun cars in the summer time in England. I purchased a later version Boxter S in 2018 for £6250 these cars are beginning to appreciate now. Mine is immaculate and been fully maintained through out its life. Its had the dreaded IMS upgrade sorted which was done when the clutch needed replacing. A general service will certainly help the car run better, something worth doing is putting some redex in the fuel to clean the injectors, this can release a few bhp. I did the de snorkel mod which improves the induction noise, helps the engine breath, and possibly releases a few bhp. Have fun and look forward to see you plans for the car.
Hi Jay, Congrats on the Boxster purchase. I too had an ‘02 Boxster S back in the day and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it - runny egg lights and all. My mistake was that I sold my ‘84 Carrera (the blue one from your concours video last year) at the time to get the Boxster. Oh well. Cheers and I look forward to seeing the progress on this car. Happy Holidays !
I've come close on numerous occasions over the years, nearly pulling the trigger on one of these, but have always owned higher performance domestics that have been cheaper to own/maintain and more thrilling to drive. Have not been able to justify it yet, but it was my first favourite car as a 10 year old when these came out. I also prefer the runny egg headlights. I love the color contrast that they add, and imo they complete the look of the original Boxster.
I guess you never heard of the Boxster chop might have saved the rear window also it help’s to warm it up with the car heater before preceding to retract
You’re back! Christmas has come early. I’ve been so looking forward to this. Really looking forward to some 986 content and your honest opinion of the car. I hope you keep and cherish it. I will enjoy watching you work on it and perhaps doing the jobs I’ve already done or need to do. Like you, I’m a newbie to this car stuff. Hagerty are recommending the 986 as one of their top 20 cars to buy in 2022. “The Green Flash” - perhaps you should call it Dunlop!?😅
Great video! I have been refreshing a 04 Boxster S myself on my channel too so have a look at the bits I have done to get it back to its best. The cowling is a cheap and easy piece to replace too
Great colour; I am thinking about having my 997 painted in a dark green. Your 986 looks very nice. The 2.7 986 was the first Porsche I got to drive and it is a great car. Enjoy it!
Congrats! My first Porsche was a 2002 Boxster in blue with a blue top. I wish you luck on replacing the rear window, especially with glass. In my area no one wanted to replace the window. Great color combination. Porsche is not a value issue!
Ah, perfect timing for me to discover your page! I am just now starting my own search for my 1st Boxster. Hoping for a Dark Blue / Natural Brown "S". Great fun, this research, and review process!! Excited to know that a fine sportscar at a reasonable price is in my future !!
I recently picked up a 2000 986 with the 2.7l and 5spd with 127k miles (clean title). I paid $3200 although it needed a new battery, coolant reservoir, spark plug tube gasket, oil change, and a gear for the convertible top. Overall its in good condition and all in with the fixes its just under $4K. Couldn't be any happier with it.
Thanks Jay, Got one last year (a .2)… you can add ‘this to your list of quirks. A ‘freezeplug in one head separating the oil and the water side just came out… weird! Glorious oil and steam show after the plastic plugs blew out spraying oil/coolant onto the headers… thought it was the end… Being a competent DIY wrench I pulled the engine, stripped the heads off and surprise it was not trashed… didn’t even mix all the oil and coolant as It was shut down right away. Doing a ton of midlife (100k miles) maintenance. It ain’t cheap but honestly increases the value considerably. People shy away from these, that’s understandable, money pits. But done right they are super sharp sports cars. No news there, we already knew that. Carry On… Good schtuff!
Also looking forward to see this. I own a 986 with the exact same color for three months now. Roughly the same condition as yours. Mine has 230.000 km on the clock, don’t know how much this is in miles. Be prepared for some maintenance, I already did the shocks ,radiators, condensors, and lower suspension arms. My rear window is also cracked so can’t wait to see you do the replacement.
Looking forward to this - I think you’re very brave! but it will be great to see it progress. You have caught it just in time, now to keep the motivation going eh :)
Nice nice car, Jay! I have an 02 S in Lapis Blue and I love it. A couple thoughts/suggestions: 1. The IMS issue is real--I know of several folks who have had them fail. Cost to fix ranges from $2.5-3K where I live. The bearing was changed in my car by the previous owner. 2. At 75K miles, you should replace the water pump and thermostat unless you have evidence it has been done. Mine failed at 65K and left me stranded. They are 60K wear items, and not especially hard to do yourself.. 3. My car has a Fabspeed exhaust--headers, cats, mufflers. It's gorgeous, and the car feels very strong. Expensive though. The PO installed mine. 4. Numeric shifter cables/shifter The cables on these cars fail pretty regularly. Numerics are way better and improve the feel as well. The Numeric shifter itself is really amazing, but expensive. If you're going to sell the car on, this is not something you'll want to spend the money on. 5. Despite the run-up in the market, $13K strikes me as all the money for that car, especially if the IMS has not been done. That said, these cars are getting to be more desirable as flat-six naturally aspirated Porsches are becoming things of the past.
It’s not a nice car, Terry, but it will be! Thanks for all the advice. I really appreciate it! Yes, I spent too much but it was the right car to tell a story. Doesn’t matter! Stay tuned!
Wow great color combo congratulations on the 986. These are an absolute joy to drive and look at. Very few cars are as fun to drive as these and what a special color u got. There is nothing wrong with having a 996 and a 986 these are only going up in value and are equally as fun if not more fun to drive than the 911. This might be a good one to keep rather than sell
Love it! I also bought my 99 996 as a vehicle to learn how to do more of my own work (see what I did there?). It’s been fun, but I wimped out on repairing the air injection system and replacing the coolant expansion tank. I also have the full leather interior and the top of the passenger door is damaged (not as bad as yours). I’ll be interested to see if that comes apart to fix.
The trick is knowing your limits, I reckon. I’ll probably do brakes but stop short at suspension and engine stuff. I’m not sure that the door will be repairable. May need reupholstering somehow. Stay tuned!
I have one of these the 2.7L never had a problem with it got a hard top with my one I used to have a 911 camera but these are nicer. The headlights will polish out with t-cut,
I bought a 2000 Boxster base model and I’m loving it. It was a Florida car also but it’s in very good condition overall. Yes the inside plastic bits are not great but it’s all original and very acceptable.
I have a MX-5 NC but actually looking for a Boxster The only reason for that I am not changing is the repair/service costs on a Boxster are much higher (I can't repair cars 😃) good luck with your green flash 😃
Have a look at some of the videos that follow this one. You will see me (someone who has literally done no work at all on cars) do some of the maintenance. It isn’t hard and it isn’t expensive!
@@JAYREAD good stuff. Enjoyed the introduction to your new toy! Sawyer turns 13 in 2 weeks, and I’m thinking a Boxster may be the right first car for him in a couple of years.

Good luck getting this one sorted there is a lot to do. The outside is obvious but the real trick is what has to be done mechanically. You could spend almost as much on sorting the car as you paid for it. The absolute best part of this car is the natural leather interior just luscious. Good luck you remind me of myself. Hi from Staffordshire England. Great video Jay. We bought a 2004 Boxster S in Arctic Silver, in great cosmetic and mechanical condition with 18inch Turbo Alloys from factory, PCM SAT Nav, heated seats, cruise control etc. for £8500 with 99,000 miles on the clock, in August 2021. For the money its not far off 996 3.4 performance for half the price. Im looking for a 996.1 also now, and looking to pay around £15k.
Haha, you had me going with the look of dispair in the parking lot and then saying there are no cupholders. Maybe think about getting a hollywood agent. And, yeah, that's about what good running Boxster's are running for lately, more or less.
I do like the color but $13K for a 20+ year old Base Boxster is high.. especially one that needs that much work.. but I've subscribed so i can follow along with the repairs.. I have a 987.2 Boxster Base, so always interested in Boxster repair videos..
I have been looking for a while now but with the price of things now being insane I have decided to hold off the only one that was worth buying was all black and I will never own an all black car ever again it was an ‘02 manual with 36,000 miles it was $15000 but I subscribed and will follow yours love the color.in and out.
Hi Jay.. I have mixed thoughts about this one, brave is one word is describe your decision as and i hope your really lucky with it because you might have a few serious issues.. for me I'd have gone the other way 996 Turbo Cabriolet and far less risk, I'm sorry but compare to 996 Boxster is not inspiring particualry if its not an S or manual. .. sorry mate
Hi Steve! Firstly, this is a manual. The aim here is to follow a story. Nice though a 996 Turbo is, there’s not much there that I haven’t said already with my 996 C2 whereas plenty of people (if maybe not you) are interested in overcoming the usual Boxster issues and understanding if you can invest a small amount in a car AND what it will cost to remedy. It brings in a new audience with a compatible car to the 996. All that said, this isn’t going to be a keeper car (I think!) so you won’t have to put up with it for long! I hope you’ll stick around anyway! Merry Christmas!
I disagree on the absolute of having the runny egg headlights. I have the clear headlights and it looks much better with the specific color of my 986.2 than the original Boxster runny egg amber. I have an '04 Paint to Order in Pastel Yellow which clashes quite horribly with the amber but is beautiful with the '04 clear lenses.
Love your vids mate. I'm interested in car prices over the world. I recently paid 22k NZD here in New Zealand where they're hard to come by So your price would be around 20k NZD. Its a 2.7 tipronic with 44k miles on it and very good condition and not to be rude but far better paint and interior condition if this is of interest to you............
@@JAYREAD And I didn't look at USD to NZD, rather GBP to NZD as stated in the subtitle in your vid forgetting the exchange between USD to GBP rate which maybe different in that part.
There was a big intake of breath from me when I heard the price! It just goes to show how much more Porsche's are in the US! That's a £4k car all day in my eyes over here?
@@JAYREAD there are a few cars in the £3250 and above range, but also some very clean 986's at £9k so prices of early cars are on the up over here as well. I remember a Wheeler Dealers episode where Mike Brewer paid 'A bag of sand' for one!
@@JAYREAD sure it is. But the amount of money to leave it well likely will make it more expensive than other Boxster in better shape. But you are correct, the colour is fantastic! Nice video, looking forward to its transformation.
@@madfemurfast yes, true. I could have saved some money maybe but at the end of this, I’ll get the car I want rather than the car I’d have settled for. Thanks for your nice comments! Stay tuned!
$13,000 for a 75k mile 986.1 with a lot of cosmetic issues. Nice color combo. Hopefully no mechanical problems. Sorry, Jay, this video had too mich rambling to be enjoyable. The price sounds OK if she doesn't need mew tires or an IMS replacement ASAP. For comparison I paid $26,000 a few months ago for a 986.1 S with 25k miles and an unusual color that is cosmetically almost perfect, has an IMS retrofit and has been very well taken care of. Just depends on how much time/effort you want to put into the car to get her "right" after the purchase I guess.
Hey thanks for the feedback. If there are parts of a video you don’t like, if you double click / tap on the right had side of the screen, it will move you forward by 10 seconds. I’ll do better next time!
I didnt hear what you paid for it. That being said, you overpaid. That thing is in terrible shape inside and outside on first sight and that always means, what you see is only the tip of the iceberg.

A great Project Jay ! Fab colour ! I will look forward to seeing your progress! Vroooooooom Merry Christmas 🎅🏻 to you and yours 👍🙏🏻🥂
Same to you and yours, Lee! Lovely to hear from you! Vrooooom!
I do like the color but $13K for a 20+ year old Base Boxster is high.. especially one that needs that much work.. but I've subscribed so i can follow along with the repairs.. I have a 987.2 Boxster Base, so always interested in Boxster repair videos..
Thank you! I’m not worried if it’s a bit high. I’ll enjoy it anyway!
#Project986 .... wrenches at the ready!
Hello Jay, just subscribed, which I hardly do, but hey, it’a about an 986, has British English and ditto humor, what more do we need!
Thanks a lot! It’s all here!
Get your rims powder coated while you swap your tires out. You're probably looking at around $125 per wheel.
Even better value in UK, my daughter has just bought a very tidy 2.7 986.2 with 83k miles for £6.9k.
Niiice!
Same colour as my Carrera 4S and yes your right it’s a very rare choice but literally everyone says it’s fantastic in that colour
I have been looking for a while now but with the price of things now being insane I have decided to hold off the only one that was worth buying was all black and I will never own an all black car ever again it was an ‘02 manual with 36,000 miles it was $15000 but I subscribed and will follow yours love the color.in and out.
I just decided to go for it. Life is too short!
Welcome to Boxster ownership!
Thanks a lot, Julian!
Ah you might be right.
I overpaid for my one I feel £6500 gbp with a hard top going by prices here in uk.
Just came from Nick's channel
Welcome, Michael. Similar levels of bullshit here just with a much better accent.
Admit I love the color
Well a manual......good for you!
It’s about time, right?!
@@JAYREAD It's the correct thing for the back roads of CT in a cool little sports car. Hope the right hand shift gets to be more 2nd nature.
I will buy this when you are done with it.
Deal!
@@JAYREAD Sweet!
What did you buy? USD 68k is NZD 107k.
@@JAYREAD 01 986.
@@martingregory5955 Oh right! Sorry, I’m being dim! So they’re around the same price your end then. Reassuring!
Really?! Whoa! Not here, Nick. Prices have gone up ridiculously over the past year.
@@JAYREAD there are a few cars in the £3250 and above range, but also some very clean 986's at £9k so prices of early cars are on the up over here as well. I remember a Wheeler Dealers episode where Mike Brewer paid 'A bag of sand' for one!
A quick search shows a 2006, 987, 2.7, with 75k miles for less than £9k in the UK 👍
Ah well! I think they are still ridiculously good value even at these prices!
Thankfully a manual.
PHEW!
Nice car. But I think the English culturally appropriated the colour from Eire.
No cupholders!!! How can it be worth that much without CUPHOLDERS!!!
I KNOW RIGHT!!!!
Great car, but the dealer sold you a car in not so great shape... Possibly you can get a cheaper one but not in the colour.
It doesn’t matter! $13k for a beautiful Porsche sports car is a steal!
Stay tuned!
@@JAYREAD 👏👏👏👏 and looking forward to the next videos!
Utter disaster: no cup holder 😂
hahahaha, mine doesn't either but I am getting good at the thigh hold
@@mattlawrence3155 Thigh hold 😂. I do that at the drive thru when I forgot I have bring family home some drinks too
FIXED NOW! Check my instagram!
@@JAYREAD saw that 😆
😁
I paid $2,000 for it.
