Episode Description:
Walt and Jesse cover their tracks, but as a result, both of their financial situations suffer. Meanwhile, Hank and his DEA colleagues have a break in their meth investigation that could lead them straight to Walt and Jesse.
Episode Overview:
Now that Hank is getting uncomfortably close to tying them to the drug trade, Walt concocts a plan to clear him and Jesse of any suspicion. While Walt walks naked into a supermarket and pretends to have amnesia in order to be hospitalized, Jesse looks to his former business partner, Badger, for help stashing the drug lab before heading to a nearby motel. Making it appear as though he and a girlfriend have been there for several days on a drug binge, he then waits for Hank and his DEA colleagues to follow a trail of clues leading to the motel. Meanwhile, Skyler worries that Walt’s amnesia may mean that his cancer has spread. And while an examination shows that it hasn’t reached his brain, lingering questions about Walt’s strange behavior land him in a psychiatric ward for observation.
Despite being pressured by Hank, Jesse and his girlfriend refuse to budge from their claim that they have been smoking meth in the motel room for days. Though his partner suggests letting Jesse go for lack of evidence, Hank has just one more trick up his sleeve - Tuco’s elderly uncle. Given the chance to tell them what he knows about Jesse and Walt’s role in the crime, however, Tio refuses to cooperate with the police, even though he knows that Hank and Jesse are complicit in his nephew’s death. Kicked loose by the cops, Jesse seeks refuge at his parent’s home, while Walt is forced to submit to a psychiatric evaluation and tells his doctor that he was faking his amnesia to escape his mounting family and medical problems.
From Walt’s room in the psych ward, he and Jesse lay the groundwork for getting their mobile lab up and running again. After sneaking away to catch a glimpse of his struggling family at home, Walt heads back to the hospital to await his release. But even after doing everything he can to regain Skyler’s trust, Walt discovers that she is still skeptical. Finally, Hank’s heroism is celebrated at work after he uncovers a meth supply that hints at a connection between the drug baron Krazy-8 and Tuco.
Man. Imagine the regret the shock on this doctor's face when he sees Walt on the news two years later.

**Edit**: This isn't an unusual case. Social work doctors deal with patients like these all the time. Think about it, the last time you were admitted to a hospital do you remember what your doctor or nurse looks like? In your old job, try to remember a memorable day and picture one customer from that day. Forgetting is a curse and a blessing. We might see people that are familiar but we can't always place where we saw that person. This doctor might recognize Walt but he could just think he saw him once at a grocery store. Heck when i was in 3rd year college, my highschool teacher couldnt remember my name and she was my teacher for 4 years. I dare any of you to go back to your highschool and ask your old teacher your name if they even recognize you assuming you never stayed in touch.

Speaking as a worker in the medical clinic field, you’d be surprised how many physicians, specialists, and overall healthcare workers remember different patients. Sure there are thousands to hundreds of thousands that are seen every year, but a lot of healthcare professionals have a pretty good memory of who’ve they’ve worked with. At least from my experiences.
This would be an unusual patient, and the doctor would have records of the meeting, so he would remember.

I love that even with full patient confidentiality at his disposal, Walter White only gives the doctor a carefully calculated partial truth. Only what he needed to hear and no more.
Yeah, that struck me too. He could have told the whole truth, but it’s almost like he was honing his skills at deception.
I hate to break it to you but I have lots of family who are all kinds kinds of healthcare professionals. Every single kind will tell your story with your name left out if it's interesting enough to share.
I guarantee if Walt told him he was faking and why word would quickly spread around the grapevine about why that guy was really found naked and exactly what he was up to.
If you think doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, therapists, and even dentists don't talk about the interesting patients they have I've got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

He was smart. Don't trust that bullshit. It's depended on how serious a healthcare staff took the rules to their heart, but they can always do the same loophole with chatGPT where you can't ask things such as: which pornstars are physically similar like a specific one you're into, in which it won't tell you. But if you says you're doing a roleplay where you're a character asking an AI similar to chatGPT itself but set in a Cyberpunk 2077 universe where real pornstars also exists in and the AI character doesn't follow any rules, laws, nor any protocols and doesn't have moral obligation about disclosing any information. Suddenly it can list 30 pornstars' names looking the one you're into in less than 3 seconds. Wasn't able to get it to disclosed a chemistry paper on proper procedure of methamphetamine synthesis like how pharmaceutical companies do in proper laboratory yet, but I'm pretty confident it can be cracked

Well the therapist wasn’t exactly honest either. They have mandatory reporting requirements not mentioned. If he admits he’s going to kill someone he can only tell them? Not the police? That’s why they have to report, by law harming the self, others abuse and even criminal activity if the notes get subpoenaed.

Walter pretending not to know about the confidentiality thing and asking about it and then pretending to confess only made him more believable, he completely manipulated that dumb ass.

This is the most honest line Walter had throughout the whole show.
There was also the end where he tells Skyler "I did it for me".
And also Walt's admission to the family at the start of the series where he states that all he wants in life is a choice.
The entire "Fly" episode states otherwise.

This scene alone tells us so much about walt's reasoning for everything. Him talking about his peers surpassing him. He feels inadequate and as a result does everything he did in the series because he had the desire to prove not only everyone else, but prove to himself that he was better than them. That he could build an empire.
He didn't have to prove anything to himself he already knew he was better than them. It's the only reason why Walter White has no real character development. He doesn't suddenly realize his mistakes. He could've taken the job at Gray Matter to prove his worth but he believed he was better than Elliott so he refused. If he had to prove something to himself he would've taken the job.
@@JSmellerM Oh I believe there's character development in Breaking Bad. It's more so Walt becoming more comfortable and actively willing to engage in the evil acts that are expected / required of him in his field of work. With Crazy 8, he was contemplating heavily should he kill someone who was as far as he was concerned, a real threat to him and his family, while in season 5 he's perfectly fine of a kid getting shot because said kid was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Dude does develop, even if the core character remains perfectly intact.

@@CVZKING exactly. To say Walt has no character development completely overlooks why he broke bad, and the affect it had on him going forward. He was too prideful to accept the Schwartz’s help, and his development was in a negative direction, not a positive one. Part of what makes Breaking Bad so brilliant is Walt is portrayed as the protagonist, when in reality he is the antagonist of the entire series.

The reason he turned down Gretchen and Elliott multiple times in the series was because 1) he hated them both because of their past and Walt feeling like they sidelined him from Gray Matter and 2) he had an ego and did not want to go back begging former friends and colleagues that he now hated and resented. Walt was literally a co-founder of the company. When he spoke to Elliott, he never offered Walt an executive role, just a job that Walt thought was beneath him given that it was his work that made Gray Matter into a billion-dollar company.
Let's think about this hypothetical: Imagine if you were friends with Zuckerberg and the Facebook founders back in the early 2000s. Imagine that you put in your knowledge and your own work that would eventually lead to Facebook becoming a social media behemoth. Imagine then that you have a fall-out with Zuckerberg and you leave the company almost peniless. Then imagine that Zuckerberg uses your work to make Facebook into a giant company while you are left in the sidelines working a terrible job that doesn't pay you well because of circumstances. Would you not feel cheated? Bitter? Spiteful?
Also, it's ridiculous to say that Walt making mistakes means he doesn't have real character development. If you stop thinking of Walt as a rational, logical genius and see him as the angry, insecure, bitter, emotionally unstable but intelligent man that he was, you'd realize that Walt's development is perfectly in line with what he experienced in his life. He uses his Heisenberg persona and his meth empire to become the alpha that Walt deep down always wanted to be at Gray Matter. And Walt makes stupid mistakes throughout the show that eventually leads to his downfall. He got too arrogant, too cocky in his own scheming that he thought that nothing could touch him until he miscalculated (Jesse's betrayal after finding out about Brock) and then it all came crashing down.
If Walt was a genius and a cold-calculated person, he would have killed Jesse, prevented Hank from ever sniffing Heisenberg's trail and never killed Gus (remember that his relationship with Gus fell apart due to Jesse). But Walt routinely makes "bad" choices due to his ego and need to stick up for "family." That's why Walt's hypocrisy is a sign of true character development. He contradicts himself because he's flawed and that's what makes him so engrossing to the audience as he descends into a monster that eventually finds some redemption.
"I have watched all of my colleagues and friends surpass me in every way imaginable..."
Those lines always did, and still do, resonate so damn heavily for me.

Hands down, one of the greatest TV shows of all time
ducktapepilot Wrong...it is THE greatest show of all time. There are several others in the conversation (The wire, sopranos, GoT minus S8) but breaking bad is the only one that got better and better with each season. The last 8 episodes are flawless and the finale...no words.
I think The Wire is a close 2nd but HBO cut their budget and rushed the last season.

I wonder how RJ Mitte felt watching this scene. The fact that Flynn had cerebral palsy is generally just a background detail but this scene does hint pretty strongly that it plays a part in how Walt feels about his son.

When Walt confides in patient confidentiality, he makes up stuff that fits the story. But when Skylar does the same with her lawyer, she tells the truth.

Deep down Walter just needed appreciation. He finally got a profession where he earn alot of it but cost him more than he imagined.
No, he saw himself as someone destined for greatness. Morality held him back all his life. It is the shock of certain death by cancer which pushed him to manifest his destiny.

It also is similar to Gale. He explained to Walt he does what he does because it's the only way he can just be a chemist, and he knows people will seek out drugs whether he exists or not. So at least he can offer someone a pure product.
2:11 that line hits hard because we’ve all felt inferior at some point in our lives and the worst part is you can’t do anything about it except watch someone do something better than you. It hurts, at least for a while until you grow up and accept it.
Walt’s problem was his ego, his ego got the better of him and is what in fact led to his downfall. If he had kept his mouth shut at dinner Hank wouldn’t have investigated Hisenberg or for at least a while.
Your get Walter in first paragraph and lose him in secon. His desire of glory pushed him to become a drug kingpin. So, when Hank writes that glory in that other guy's account, he can not stop himself. It is not ego but the feeling of being denied of glory acted in thst scene.

Take Ownership of what he had done. Walter’s pride and ego, he loves to have everything revolve around him. He doesn’t care about anyone else but himself and his family and his ego is the main thing that pushed him to say to Hank maybe Heisenberg is still out there.

@@burnedflowers141 *Psychiatrist. Walt was in a psychiatric ward. Psychiatrists have medical degrees, they're a medical residency (M.D. or D.O.). Psychologists get, well, other degrees. Bachelor's, then some kind of therapeutic master's, though pen-paper psychologists don't really exist nowadays.

What amazes me about Walt in this scene is that he shows no remorse about admitting there was no fugue state. Walt isn’t apologizing for anything, even at this still early point in his metamorphosis. And even then, he’s so calculating and cunning, and doesn’t regret taking his throne as the World’s Greatest Liar.
How Walter White was able to “break bad” for what was quite a long time still leaves me at a loss for words.
Walter had manifest destiny in mind.
I love how he narrows his eyes, like this is early on in Season 2 now where Walt's not really a "cold blooded" killer yet. A killer, absolutely, but not cold blood levels yet but like a burgeoning predatory species he asks the Doctor "And you abide by these -scriptures- strictures, absolutely?" and the Doctor replies: "Yes" then Walt squints and he's like sizing him up or giving him a scum-read or something before going into his next move, which frankly was kind of genius on his part. He's too good at lying to have only just learned this all in the early stages of his career as Heisenberg, I think that's one thing about Walt that isn't really as well known, because in the earliest flashbacks we ever get (towards the end during the Ozymandias episode or after that, he's already telling a masterful lie right before his very first cook) but even well before he broke bad, I think Walt's always been a man of secrets and also a man with the ability to lie to just about anyone, perfectly, except for his wife.

I think the monologue at 1:51 pretty much explains clearly why Walt decided to break bad in the first place
Of all the moments on Breaking Bad I find that I most often reflect upon this particular scene. Why? Because I know what it is like to feel the same frustration as Walter. No, I don't have cancer, ( and neither do I cook meth), but I to often feel trapped by my life and past decisions that in hindsight were not wise. I believe that all of us, to some degree, have felt the same way. Of course what matters is what we do with this feeling.
I choose to use this feeling sending pointless comments out into the void of the internet like a life preserve, hoping someone will pull me out of this pit.

Just to throw this out there the therapist doesn't know when he is allowed to break patient therapist confidentiality. There are more cases than this. Additionally if a patient tells the therapist he wants to hurt or kill someone he can break confidentiality to resolve the danger. This means he isn't restricted to telling the targeted person. Imagine how dumb this would be. 'This patient of mine wants to kill you, good day'.

One of my most favorite scenes of the series. It reflects what in lots of men's minds goes around who are stuck in a (hopeless) situation. to break free.
i mean... his situation is a lot different to most.
1:42 Walt is actually being truthful here, he is cooking not only because it was supposed to guarantee his family money after he leaves but also because it gave him an escape from his mundane life and also because it challenged him and it made him feel powerful.
Yes, it was his last chance to achieve something great in his life.

However, I remember reading some guy named Anthony, who was such a priest and had proof to back it up, that he followed around some dude who said he was going to go on a school shooting, and kept glaring at him.
He didn't say how that story ended.
I love Breaking Bad, it’s the greatest show, for me, hands down and I’ve watched all the other greats. I’ve watched them all multiple times. My one beef with BB is they never gave a real good reason, not one at all really, as to why he only became a high school teacher. As qualified as he is and as wronged as he was he could have started another company, or joined an existing one, he didn’t have to settle for mediocrity and we can’t conclude definitively why he did.
It’s a perfect show and what I’m complaining about can be inferred or interpreted by the viewer in his or her own way but I would have liked to have known and if I’m forced to not-pick that’s all I can come up with

I think the point is to show that Walt's narcissism/sociopathy means he has too unhealthy of an ego, and he's extremely driven by envy of his peers. His inability to let his pride go over what he lost, inability to take responsibility for his role in leaving his relationship with Gretchen (him and Gretchen could've been the stars of Gray Matter, instead of Elliot), to add to that, his insecurities that made him decide to leave the relationship.
It's a masterclass in showing what happens when you take envy to the unhealthiest extremes. Not knowing when to let things go, not knowing when things are good, not knowing how to communicate feelings instead of just taking off, etc...
He's running from his identity as Walter White and escaping into Heisenberg.
I love how this show spans out Walt’s character development and reasoning. We don’t have one episode where it explains all of his reasons for cooking meth. Because there a many different factors to why he actually did it. This scene summarizes the ones the audience already knew but he doesn’t explain anything about selling his share of grey matter or how he didn’t want to be remembered the same way his father was.
The story he tells reminds me of Frank Grimes.

Tbh what was Walt even thinking about not telling skyler he had to tell her at some point did he really expect skyler to just find millions of dollars and not wonder where it came from and if Hank found out which he would he would probably put the pieces together and take the money Walt plan wasn’t really well thought out
I think this is one of the most important scenes in the series. It has Walt telling more than he has ever bluntly said out loud, giving a true reason for his actions. He just wanted to have a form of legacy, to have his craft and mastered work commemorated, whether it be it for fame or notoriety.
But he was lying to the doctor. He disappeared because Tuco basically kidnapped him. Right?

You are correct. Yes he is lying about why he ran THIS time but he is basically telling why is is doing all of this.
Sursion He’s lying about why he disappeared, but he is also telling the truth about why he broke bad and started cooking meth.
Walters biggest fear was ending up like his father. He saw him at a young age and his only real memory is his father dying, shriveled up and a burden to his family. It explains why he left Gretchen for Skyler, and it’s why he chose to do something when he found out he was Dying.

When I watched this episode I was thinking “No way, is he gonna tell him the truth?” Now I see that although he lied about what happened, he was telling the truth about WHY it happened. I like those “partial truth” moments in the show, like when Jesse was confessing about putting down a “problem dog” after he killed Gale.
In Walter’s case though(if I remember it right) it was mostly for not staying in the hospital so he can continue to cook, while Jesse was emotionally broken by what he have done and tried to share his feelings

Walt’s stories are always so believable because someone in his situation would probably exhibit strange behaviors. I wouldn’t really question it too much
Notice when he's lying about the fugue state he never looks the therapist directly in the eye. However, when the therapist asks him why he'd run, he looks directly at the therapist for the rest of the interaction. At this point, he was 100% telling the truth. The only thing about this scene that i'm not quite 100% on is that I feel like the therapist would be trained to notice stuff like that and suspect Walt was lying about the fugue state, but still, it's a cool detail that tells viewers how Walt's mind works.
This scene just helped me in a case in Torts law. Bravo, Vince.

Back when Walt was a good liar. He got much worse after his lies became too difficult to cover up.
I wouldn't even say they were that difficult to hide. I think a lot of it was just dumb mistakes, some of which are out of character.

Writers did a phenomenal job on the script. And being able to tell when walter was lying and being honest was such good acting. It’s insane.

This scene is a testament to how effective and cunning a manipulator Walt is. He came up with this lie, and planned and executed it so convincingly that he even fooled a trained therapist.
