    One can never have too many C128D videos.

      @@RetroMarkyRM I was wondering why it didn't work out to change the internal drive back to 8. I modified one of mine to make the drive switchable from the outside and one to set the internal drive's address to 9 (and then disable it completely), because it has no internal drive anymore (the usual 1571-dying-when-left-open-all-the-time-syndrom). It should be just one jumper setting. If that doesn't work, then maybe there's a broken trace to that jumper, because open means "drive 9" and closed means "drive 8"). If you close that jumper, PIN 15 on U106 should be connected to ground. If it still isn't, then maybe someone has cut the trace somewhere instead of using the jumper.

      @@EgonOlsen71 Thanks for your comments. I tried the jumpers but still no joy (grounding pin 15 on the 6522 also just in case) but no joy. I think you're right that there must be a trace cut but I have no idea where to look. I looked at the whole board with a magnifier but didn't see anything obvious. Bit of a mystery this one. I did try and understand where the electrical signals might go to and from the 6522 (U106) but there's not much info out there :-p

      @@RetroMarkyRM Strange. Grounding the PIN should have helped regardless of any broken traces after it. Maybe the chip itself is damaged, but that would be a rather strange coincidence.

      @@EgonOlsen71 Yes indeed. I could change the 6522 but tbh, it's not worth the poential damage from desoldering and I can workk around it with pihat, sd2iec and ultimate2. It's more that I wanted to make the machine as genuine as possible but it's an awkward beast :-)

    CP/M FAST is not about booting CP/M faster, it's about CP/M itself being (a lot) faster, it actually makes working with CP/M software on the C128 workable.

    • @RetroMarkyRM
      @RetroMarkyRM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah i see, good to know. I presume it does that by loading more files into memory?

  • @Mrav79
    @Mrav79 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is possible the switch on the back is running to the jumpers so you can change drive number. Anyway changing those should change drive number, maybe double check connections?

    • @RetroMarkyRM
      @RetroMarkyRM  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish it were that simple but it's not anything to do with switches. Even over riding the jumpers on the motherboard hasn't helped. It's an odd situation as still if you use any external drive it assigns it to drive 8 but the internal just won't budge.

    Nice machine be good to see cpm on it ,i have recently done the drive belt on a spectrum plus 3 i bought a few years ago i could run cpm on ,but i will wait for my spectrum next to arrive that can also run cpm .

      I have recently read that CP/M on the Spectrum Next is still being worked on, and I believe that it has something to do with the BIOS; at is stands, the CP/M for the Spectrum +3 only recognises floppy disk drives A: and B: so it needs some patching before it can "see" any other drives. I have CP/M for my +3 too, and i would love to be able to run it from a Mass Storage Device (with the help of Garry Lancaster's +3e extensions). I'm also going to back the current kickstarter for the Spectrum Next, but the new batch will not arrive until 2021.

    wow i was really searching for this video...i have an 128dcr and i dont want to do the bypass=switch trick to use my Sd2iec and get "rid" of the internal drive. But UltimateII is a bit spicey $$$$...

    • @RetroMarkyRM
      @RetroMarkyRM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One easy thing- if you really don't want to mod the board is just to remove the cables from the drive and it'll "choose" SD2IEC as drive 8. It'll also save wear and tear on the drive.

      i thought that i could use the bin file with the UII+ , not burn it to a U36. Please advice :-) ..... any other low cost cartridges to make it happen???

    • @RetroMarkyRM
      @RetroMarkyRM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FISHBONEPRODZ apparantly you can "load" the bin file using the U2 itself so no need to burn the rom if you don't want to. www.bartsplace.net/content/publications/devicemanager128.shtml
      Also you need to make sure your U2 firmware is up to date.

    Es una lastima que hicieran tan poco software para aprovechar el C128, practicamente todo era para funcionar en C64.

    Hello; Great Video!!! I just got may new old C128D a few days ago after having one in 1988 until 1989. (I still have my C64 from Xmas 1983 and will never get rid of it!!) I have had my Ult2+ for around 2 years now and love it!! I have tried it on my C128D before seeing this video and was always stuck using it in C64 mode. This Device Manager ROM would be GREAT to install into my C128D!! I have found the image of the V1.99 ROM, but I have now way to burn it to a ROM. I have googled and did other search's but can't find one already made to buy. Do you know of anyone selling it? If not I've seen many videos on people burning ROM's and know I'd be able to figure it out. What and where should I get the ROM burner? What and where should I buy the blank or programable ROM's? TY for any help that you can give to me.

      @@RetroMarkyRM ty I have found a place or 2 that will burn it and send to me, but I was watching many videos about C128D since I just got mine and I’ve had a UII+ cartridge for about 2 years. I did a firmware update for first time and you can flash a .bin to it and it starts right up like it’s plugged into the mother board. Also in the firmware update I can set its to drives to 1571 or 1581 not just 1541’s like it’s been for me.

    • @RetroMarkyRM
      @RetroMarkyRM  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Charleshawn66 yes the new firmware adds support for more than just the 1541 and tbh you probably dont need the device manager rom as shown in my video with the new changes to the U2+ and the newer rom image. (must try this out, Im still using the same set up as per my video so I've missed some of the changes)
