I'm mad about Commodore 64 and mainly do hardware fixes, mods, homebrew reviews and love to get chatting with other c64 fans. :)

Do you think I could run a ram expander and kun fu flas at the same time. I’m hoping to be able to run geos at a decent speed to do word processing/publishing activities but have access to files on sd (kung fu) at the same time.
Cool video. I have a pretty similar terminal, Ampex 219. It is black and white, not amber. Did you need to remove the top cover and adjust vertical and horizontal size of the CRT? On my terminal the picture is too big on both dimensions.
Es una lastima que hicieran tan poco software para aprovechar el C128, practicamente todo era para funcionar en C64.
Gotta like these Demos!
I agree..
They can't make a laptop that will last five years but vintage computers seem to run forever.. :)
Ha! that's right. It's not just computers though...nothing is designed to last now. We've lost pride in our work it seems...
I am working on a similar CP/M setup with Gotek but don't have the USB stick with all those great disk images. Is that downloadable from somewhere?
the silver one is rare
Got this with our Speccy 48K back when I was a kid and I never ever once tried it out. Tuning in to this video now, 40ish years later, to see what I missed out on back then...
OK, I think this will be of interest, but perhaps not the right subject matter for a quick vid to watch right before bedtime. Saving you for a watch over the weekend.
@@MrThunderwing thanks. Very much appreciated :)
Am geeking out. Only knew of Xenix and Trsdos-16 working with the 68k back in the day, this is awesome. Used the TRSDOS-16 assember some, but it had non-standard mnemonics wheras I think the Xenix one had standard ones. Awesome seeing on CP/M and the smooth scrolling.
Thanks. Cost me about £50.00 to build the 68K so if you like it, why not make one too?
It looks pretty good, unfortunately it's too fast. Almost unplayable for me. Also the resolution downgrade is a bit weird. Good effort though.
All fair comments! :) Yes, it is super quick, a bit too much for my ageing brain!
That scrolling looks like 120fps. It's a weird comparison, I know, but I love it
I know what you mean. So smooooth
Not really running on an 8bit. However, still looks damn good. Some of the 3d models need more than one colour so the edges are defind 👍
If you are in need of an editor there are two microEmacs ports that run on this board.
Thank you. I will google it!
i own a crt toshiba with teletext but it dont work no more sadley
You could probably sell it on ebay as spares/repairs
This is reallt nice! I would love to try this, how is it connected to the C64? thanks!
Next project: new multi-user micro-mainframe, connect to a modem bank and give some of us shells on it. There is a concurrent CP/M. Not sure if that one is open source though.
That'd be amazing!
Great 👍
It is impressive considering comparing to what he had back in the day.

Hi Mark i ve been doing similar on my Beeb using TCPser with a Pi4. And a similar ANSI terminal program on the Beeb. I can log into the CLI on the Pi and work away. Incidentally when you going to use thst wimodem and login to my Viewdata BBS. It runs on a BBC Master. Its called Night Ow lBBS . Details are on Stardot , communications section. Cheers
clocked too fast to play, but nice experiment
I agree. Will have to say if it's possible to lower the clock speed.
Is any of the two cables null modem?
Awesome but agree about the colour/resolution. Elite was originally in MODE 4, maybe? This is MODE 2 (lower res, more colours). Great to see, thanks!! How about a black and white version in MODE 0 (highest res)?! Might have got my mode numbers wrong but its been 40 years!
Elite on the bbc was actually split into two modes. The main screen and the scanner were two different modes by counting scanlines and then switching to mode 2 (I think?) for the scanner!
@@RetroMarkyRM Yup, you're right, I remember now!

I would enjoy a teletext service, to be honest. I know it's wicked old-fashioned but I liked it. Somebody bring it back.
I would too tbh. You can "kinda! have one using raspberry pi or go to online BBS sites but a full on genuine one like the 80s would be awesome!
@@RetroMarkyRMhave you tried to install it on Windows PC, the Vbit2 software? You don't need any equipment apparently, or a web browser. I might try it.
I'll look into that, thanks. @@SRC267
The garbage is probably due to flow control. You probably want hardware flow control, and you also want to ensure that the terminal type on the pi is set correctly. For example type export TERM="vt100" and also export LANG="C", so you don't get any utf-8 chars that the beeb can't understand.
ahhh thank you :)
Neat =D Always fun to do stuff like that!
ta!
Nice video. I also like to do this with my retro computers :) Check that your serial cable is shielded and good quality. That text garbage might be just connection interference.
That's a good point. thanks for that!

Crackin' stuff Mark Just wondered if you fancied checking out my BBS. I know from watching that you like the odd bit of BBSing. It is still testing at present but will offer dialup and TCP/IP. It is a Viewdata Board (like Telstar) although hosted from a lone BBC Master. There is a about 200 pages of reading there and a sysop chat function. I set it up in the evenings only and at the moment . It's not every night but if you let me know if you fancy looking I will set it up ... cheers Brian
Sure dude. Would love to. Let me know the details and I'll get back to you.
Nice bit of kit .
Thanks. I recommend it if you want a bit more expandability to your Elk :)

what could the dev have done to completely eliminate slowdown without sacrificing the amount of sprites (ya gotta have all the enemies..) just less detail? perhaps on the floor tiles? bricks without texture?
So cool...
ha! yes indeed :)
Well! I recieved a couple of breadbins, and ofcourse there's always one stubborn one in the lot. That old girl refuses to accept the good old restore key, even when you're going full Shrek on her! So yeah, i'm also gonna switch out that cap. And to be absolutely sure, i'll also swap out the good old 7406. Those also cost almost next to nothing anyway!
I hope the cap and 7406 solves it. I suspect it will tbh. Good luck :)
@@RetroMarkyRM I sure hope so, since the diag tools didn't give me any errors. So that's a good sign. ;) Anyway! Thanks man!

Heya @@RetroMarkyRM! Sorry for responding after 2 months, too many projects going on. Even though i didn't get stuck, i'd just let you know that the mod worked flawlessly.
Great! It's a real improvement no?@@ArjanKuiper
Please explain how midi works on sidekick? Btw. This demo is awesome!
It's literally a feature built in to the sidekick. I vaguely recall I did have to find some midi instrument files online somewhere so there was some faffing about but once done you download some midi demos from CSDB and should be good to go.
@@RetroMarkyRM I don't understand. are you outputting midi to another device?
@@felippeboulderdash8453 It goes out to my hifi system and is mixed with the SID outputs derived from the sidekick.
@@RetroMarkyRM ok, I think I'm getting c128 and side kick soon. I'll figure this out. I would like to use SID as a syntheziser.
@@felippeboulderdash8453 You might want to look into the DATEL MIDI cartridge as I believe the sidekick implementation is based on that
I just bought a pre-built Sidekick64 cartridge and a Pi3A for my C128D off ebay. It joins my A1000 with a Pistorm sitting right next to it. ;-) I never thought I'd see the day an 8-bit sounded better(potentially) than an Amiga. The screen isn't the selling point though as it's not as though you're using a menu on it like a Gotek or something. I did buy a cartridge relocator because the cartridge is a bit long and it would be better sitting upright. I should be able to see the little screen from the side for what it's worth. On it's own the midi doesn't sell it, the multi sid emulation might, especially as my C128D has blown its sid and it's a real pain getting inside the C128D to replace it.
I agree with your points about the screen and a relocator (especially on the 128D which is quite thick so accessing the cart port is a bit more fiddly). Sounds though you're happy with your purchase. For the price it's great especially if you have a spare Pi.
@@RetroMarkyRM Well, the Sidekick and Pi3A have just arrived, and I'm just waiting for the cart relocator to show up any day now. Which is fine as I'm too busy at the moment to play with it. There are so few videos of the SideKick working, or a proper non-boring review (especially for the C128 functionality).
@@AussieAmigan Yeh, very few videos especially ones that explain some of the nuances.
@@RetroMarkyRM The cartridge relocator finally arrived, and I put it all together and it was a flaky as heck. I then used it without the cart relocator and it works fine. Mind you I needed to select the option in the config file to do an overclock more compatible with the C128. Unfortunately, my C128d SID is blown. I have an ARMSID waiting to be installed in the wings and hopefully, as its pin compatible, I'll be able to do the SID and CPU wiring to the sidekick. I am not looking forward to trying to get into that C128D case though.
@@AussieAmigan Great stuff. I actually didn't bother to solder mine in but used small wires with tiny clips that just clip onto the pin legs you need. I dont remember exactly what theyre called but pretty sure you can find them super cheap on ebay. It's easier than soldering them in.
Sat here with a stupid grin on my face remembering doing the type-ins! Machine code type-ins were simutaneously the best and killers. You'd wait a month for the mag to come out and then hours spent typing in hundreds of long "DATA" lines only to be rewarded with "CHECKSUM ERROR IN LINE...". Great learning experience. Fun times.
haha. Yeh, I remember that! Good times 😛
Yes.
haha. I agree 😛
Pretty cool!
if you can get the lower key stem out of the keyboard, you can used superglue + baking soda + supports to rebuild the key (so it wont break if you need to remove it agan), or you could (get someone else? or PCBway?) 3D print a replacement.
That's a good idea. I've been trying to find a replacement key or keyboard but these things are rare/expensive so will think about your idea
@@RetroMarkyRM depending on how the stem fits (inside or outside) and where the break is, you should be able to use component leg offcuts as the reinforcement material - there should be some YT examples of using super glue and baking soda (FWIW also poor man's shoe deodorizer)
