Got to say lads you have turned a dead loss into a (nearly) running Chieftain. Whoever dug that concrete out and only damaged that bit of throttle sheathing did bloody well! And OF COURSE that frame would be spot on. Ted approved it. 👍👏
You are genuinely my new favorite channel gents. I’ve always loved restoration videos, and got a tank encyclopedia from a best friend on me 13th birthday. Seeing some English wanks potter about amongst these amazing machines fills my heart with joy.
Loving this. I only ever did 43's so great to see the huge differences as well as the similarities. Thing I enjoy most of all in ALL your videos, is the optimism & the brainstorming to find solutions. Reminds me of how we used to fix things back in the day. Example: If a 4 tonner canopy got torn, this is what we did: 1. Find a 6" cotter pin, open up & snap in 2. Hammer one end to a point. Hammer the other end to a spoon, then put a hole in the spoon 2. Find a reel of Army Green String (the wollen sort) 3. Use the cotter pin as a big needle (we made 2 of them from 1 pin). Sew up the canvas nice & tidy 4. Waterproof the repair with Harry Black Masting Tape, inside & out 5. Complete this outside by adding axle grease - Repair complete Nowadays, all they apparently do is hand he old camopy section in for a new one. Where the hell's the can-do approach to making do & mending things gone? Ah well. The disposable world we live in today, I suppose. Looking forward to seeing the first engine mounting soon... and the rest of the concrete either removing or welding 🤣
I'm amazed that this concrete tank is not in such bad condition but definitely you guys have to work very hard on the wiring. Keep up the excellent job you are doing👍👍👍
Is all of this your interpretation of hot rodding a tank with all the mod's. The 2iC had a good look around I noticed. Bloody great workshop dog. Ted. Now there's a fine name. Good mate's here whether be it man or beast would instantly be called Roo. No question's asked. When you get into the bowel's of these machine's there is quite alot of component's that would be impossible to work on with the engine/ trans in. It's really good to see a mob of young bloke's all with the same interest and enjoying what your doing so much. Good on ya fella's.
Happy days! Great work on those supports. Will be exciting to see the gearbox and engine installs and initial start up! Concrete be buggerd! Cheers for sharing
Looking good. It makes me happy to see you are covering the tank's/engine decks. One thing that always bugs me is them being left in the open with the drain plugs out. You call them quills, I call them final drive's. Before a pack lift you always check and double check the final drives are disconnected.
When I lubed some stuck L60 cables, I filled an old fire extinguisher with paraffin and pressurised it. Connected a footballl bladder with a hole at each end, to the extinguisher hose, pushed the cable into the other end of the bladder. Cable tied both ends in place and shot pressurised paraffin down the cable. Worked a treat.
With the corrosion you got inside the engine box, as you grind or sand off those mounting points, seems like you'll need shims for everything mounting to the engine box.🤔 Glad to see you bringing this old girl back to life.👍
Did not see the video when it was filled with concrete, it must have been a hell of of a job removing that. It does not seem very corroded by the concrete water though, which is very aggressive. Good luck with it!
Do you ever get rid of the smell of WD40 and Diesel? I think you guys are a fabulous you tube series-& that is praise indeed from a Yorkshireman. Greetings from Tasmania Australia 👍😁🇦🇺🦘
'Is there a knack to this?', yes there is, stand on the glacis facing the back of the tank, hook fingers over NBC pack, swing legs into the hatch facing upwards, and as you drop, perform a 180...doddle
has to said i loathe adjustable spanners, it makes me laugh when i watch a lot of YT videos from the states, they are always using them on high end engineering stuff, in aviation, makes me cringe, it think of the odd couple of pairs i owned that always opened up, and were instantly hurled across the workshop - its a very rare occasion when i do use them, i have a giant set for ripping heads off fire extinguishers and alike, saves breaking my teeth amazing work there young Joe - throttle linkage was a lucky one, something else saved and extra naffing about reduced Sebs dismounting was rather amusing, he's nearly as arthritic as i am - i mean athletic
You may have gotten away with chucking the tap in a drill and then chasing the threads with that. A lot quicker and you'd have annyoed far more people. In a previous life i used to do that to tap m4 holes in 3mm wall stainless steel box section when fitting machine guarding, worked a treat and I actually snapped fewer taps doing that. You could get away with a deeper hole in ally, WD was the best lube for those holes
Mr. Hughes, unless you want an extensive amount of welding splatter, don't use gaskets gas metal ark welding. As for Flux core ark welding, this will give you the same result. You should always use gas when you're welding metals together.
A big lump of steel to weld to and we don’t know the grade either? Must be a task to weld did you pre heat. I’m interested to see how it holds up just give send it and see !!
Seb, did you style your dismount on some kind of event from a lambing shed? I was waiting for Joe to tickle your nose with straw to make you sneeze 😂😂😂
Angle iron bed frames, don't see them about anymore, the amount of project builds of mine they have contributed to over the years. The number of times I used to see one dumped somewhere and go back with a hacksaw....pre-cordless grinder days...and chop it up to carry it home less conspicuously ...
Question for you mate or anyone who knows, whats the armour plate thickness on the belly of this beastie? Seems awfully thin to cope with blasts from the underside of a vehicle from mines or IED's
I see you use WD40 as a penetrating fluid. Whilst WD is versatile, it 'aint really excellent at anything. For instance Back to Black is a really good silicon lube for window runners and any sort of creaking plastic bits. (like you find on tanks) And Plus gas is a superior penetrant but not much good as a lubricant. And as you know, if you run out of the stuff, a drop of diesel will do just as good a job. All that's needed with any of the stuff is a bigger drop of patience, like hours.
Who thinks Ted is the Brains of the operation?
Ted is actually head of Leyland motors thus is feeding you inside info

He's certainly the talent.
Ted's sits atop that tank like he commanded a battalion of tanks in his previous life

As for the question you asked about Ted, no, not me. Who's name is on this TH-cam channel? Yours is.
